The only downside to this version of the song is that one of the best parts of this performance is his physical reactions/facial expressions and they were difficult to see. I find with lyric videos it somewhat takes away from the surprise of some of the lines he says also. I would recommend when you watch Bo to try and get the versions from his specials as they're as good a performance as he can give. Still enjoy all your stuff and this video was no different.

White person from rural Appalachia here (down south where we pronounce it Appah-LATCH-ah). Yeah there are lots of poor white folks here, but the thing about white privilege is that it's not saying that all white people have it harder than all Black people. It's that if you compare two people who have otherwise identical life circumstances except that one is white and one is Black, the Black person has that one additional struggle of skin color making their life just that much harder. So while the white folks here definitely have a lot of very real struggles (lots of food insecurity, drug addition, etc in this area), the color of their skin isn't what is contributing to their lives being hard. Typically the things making their lives harder are classism (from interpersonal biases around appearance/accent/dialect/lack of education/etc to systemic issues that keep people stuck in poverty) and everything that goes with not having much money, including lack of access to healthcare, mental health services, healthy food, transportation, good education, etc.

Glad your able to share your opinion honestly. The world is crazy and people are even more wound up with all this misguided resentment, hate and inability to change with the world. It's great to have traditions and beliefs but nobody has the right to hate because of creed or belief. "Judge not based on the color of the skin, but the content of the character" And dont let 1 disqualify all others that seem similar because you are being similar by showing hate because of difference instead of love for the uniqueness of every person. We all learn from environment but as you get older your environment changes. You change too, but how you change is your choice. Do you choose to grow as a person or sit in place and accept what others taught you without question.(not everyone is good... but no race as a whole is bad either. There are good and bad everywhere and without one you wouldn't see the other.) P.S. love the bo burnham and harry mack vids.

I'm not sure you fully understand the concept of "white privilege." I mean, at it's core it's just the notion that having white people face no systemic hardship based on our skin color. So yeah being poor and white is probably harder than wealthy and non-white. People conflate advantage and privilege often, this is what you did in the video. Conflating stability, economic security, and education with privilege. These are different concepts at their core. You can believe that there's not a different lived experience based on the social construct of race. Or believe that being white has no inherent privileged position in the U.S. (though I think this only works if you believe there's no functional difference, because if you acknowledge there is a difference then statistically white is the best in the U.S.). But, to say "I'm not white and I had more advantages than some white people I've met, therfore I doubt the legitimacy of white privilege." Is a display that you've failed to engage with concept in good faith.
@SebsDuran3 жыл бұрын
Sorry. I've read quite a bit on the subject too. And when it comes to Discrimination and Disparities, I can't in good faith believe white privilege is a real thing. Just sounds like Marxist thoughts around oppressor v oppressed to me. Also, Asian Americans, Chilean Americans, Indian Americans, etc all outperform vastly White Americans if we want to use statistics. The world isn't that simple to allow for univariate explanations for all disparities. But maybe this is just me. Me ceasing to believe that I had less opportunity than a white here really allowed for my world to transform, so we can leave this at an anecdotal level and agree to disagree as STATISTICALLY you and I can find a lot of ways to believe what we believe. But. Let's stop making excuses. Hopefully one day people will one day stop judging the white part of my daughters and they can just be who they are.
@oivi3iv6353 жыл бұрын
@Sebs Duran you talked past my point to nail in your talking points. That's disheartening man. My point was you described specific advantage in the video not what any serious person claims is white privilege. And, upon reading your response if you have only ever engaged with authors or sources which explain "white privilege" in such incomplete terms I encourage you to expand your experiences. I think we share a common ethic as Christians that our individual conviction in Christ frees us from the fear of engaging in complex topics from all sides. But, to be clear if you want to get into statistics with people in the future (I won't actually because my weekend's starting and I don't want to do that), I'd encourage you not to cite an ethnicity which makes up about 1% population which has historically fallen into the sociological "model immigrant" group who historically has a massively controlled immigration pipeline limited to individuals who have displayed wealth or aptitude to have them fit directly into an upper middle class. Especially when you and everyone who deflects this question knows "white privilege" is a conceptualization of a piece of the black-white binary upon which American racial issues is theorized to be organized under. If your argument is accurate use it to disprove the thing white privilege as a concept was created to explain, the phenomenon of it being harder to have black skin then white skin in the U.S. don't deflect into statistics of smaller population groups. I don't expect you to be an expert on racial theory, or for you go agree with me. But, it sucks that you chose to respond by ignoring my point to stand firm instead of a listening ear. I wish you the best, you seem like a good man, if just one a little too convinced of his own righteousness. (I'm aware of the irony of that last line as I crusade a fine point of the complex racial conversation on a react video, hope you know as a fellow Christian and human I do actually wish you the best brother. Don't worry I'm still subscribed and I'll keep watching your videos, you have an infectious laugh and your physical activity is encouraging enjoy your weekend)

I think Haitians and Jamaicans would still be considered "African-American." The people who live there now have ancestors that were brought over from Africa to the Caribbean, which is still part of the "Americas."

African Americans actually just refers to black people in America (aka the U.S.) not North America or Central & South, etc. Also I think the larger point he was trying to make, is that there are plenty of black people in the world who are not American, or even to your point live in the western hemisphere. Black people in Africa, Europe, Asia, and Australia are not African American. It's a weird catch-all term that white women like to thrown around to try to be PC, but honestly if you use it broadly to identify every black person you see, you actually end up being the ignorant one.

Personally, I also find the whole thing funny. There is no reason to hate on anyone for their skin color, nor is there any reason to feel guilt over skin color. I don't like terms like "white privilege" or any other privilege because it pushes the problem to the wrong side. People shouldn't hate on people who do well for their skin color, they should hate on the racist asshole who makes life difficult for others based on their skin color. People ought to try not to be so easily hateful or easily offended or feel responsible for things that are not their fault or put blame on people who are not at fault. Everyone should just grow up already. Not like it's gonna happen, of course, so pass the popcorn.

to your point about appalachia, all issues come down to class divides (the haves vs have nots) but in the US - due to being an heterogenous society there's an extra layer of racial divide. It's not about white guilt, it's about acknowledging the dichotomy of experiences due to race. As Malcolm X said: "If you stick a knife in my back nine inches and pull it out six inches, there’s no progress. If you pull it all the way out, that’s not progress. The progress is healing the wound that the blow made. And they haven’t even begun to pull the knife out, much less, heal the wound. They won’t even admit the knife is there.”

7:30 I read a long time ago someone's thoughts on this piano bit, and I found it very interesting. They said that they believe Bo intentionally flipped the left and right hand playing here. Essentially, in music, the solo/melody typically played on notes higher up while the repetitive chords are played by the lower keys. However, this person thought that Bo flipped it to show that straight white men can have their own problems in life, but since they are straight white men, they get overshadowed by the repetitiveness of life. Essentially, people undermine their problems and see them as unimportant because they run the world and are just going through the motions. My explanation is a bit convoluted and probably confusing, my bad. But I just wanted to share

Most people like watching reactions to hear what you specifically have to say ☺️ An aside, you asked about Hispanic privilege, what you described would be class privilege. Privilege is systematic and institutional, so in the US, in most communities and circumstances, Hispanic privilege probably isn’t going to be something you’ll find. (Hope this doesn’t come across as “telling you about you” lol, strictly speaking from a sociological standpoint)

This WHOLE song is just irony. He is literally stating actual problems compared to (most) white peoples problems which are... well yea the iphone case didn't fit the phone... My favourite line of this song is "Everyone thinks that i've got it easy, and just cuz it's true, doesn't mean that it's right" 1000% contradictory statement and the amount of ppl reacting to this song who doesn't get that baffles me....

Lol I think most call jamaicans just that. Because most people I know like the accent and dont know better when you get dom rep people. It's not ment to be rude but it's the same as looking at other species if you dont have much/any experience with them.(example... until I lived with mastiffs I didnt know there were like 8 different breeds. And not even from the same parts of the world.) You dont know something until you see that you dont and then take time to learn about it or spend time around it. Someone who never worked a crappy food job wouldn't get just how trash it is. But what does working for........... (random common tier company) do for you other than experience..... not much. You just look more useful to the same tier jobs. Now if you put in a year or two and can prove you know the slightly better jobs work you can take the stairs and grow... Anyways went to faroff topic. Point was you know what you experience and until you realize your ignorant in something you wont even know you can or should grow.
