My dad was an electrician on the bridge. In 1975 he took me to work, I spent time in the control house then he took me up one of the towers via an open lift to the top, I stood as far back as I could because I was an open lift .We went to the top where the sheeve wheels are there is a mechanism to lower the bridge manually. Good memories.

I was one of the kids on that bridge that day, my whole class was on, was 1987 btw

I was the one who used to wind the pulley to raise the bridge. I was knackered by the end. It's a good job Desperate Dan was there to help me.

Following the construction of the barrage upstream there is no requirement for river to be navigable for the size of boats that would require the bridge to be lifted.

For Information: I was the chairman of the Darlington Video Film Makers and had a agreement with the other film makers that we would use each others footage to gain maximum coverage.
