My wife of 36 years died on 10/29/2023 of stage 4 pancreatic cancer, and I think this is appropriate to play at her Celebration of Life service. We are children of the 60's, 70's, and 80's! RIP Ruth (Barry) Hockenberry 1964-2023 from your heartbroken husband Gene❤ Update--it's been 6 months and 18 days--I miss her more today than the day she died! @@thecasualrider2668your absolutely right I'm in hella pain and the pain of losing a parent especially your mother is unbearable to take I can't stop thinking and crying about her and I been crying so much it hurts to cry and even wipe the tears away from my eyes but that won't stop me from the pain of thinking about her. Man I remember when I was young kid I would tell my mom and dad crying and hugging them tons of times saying I love you and don't want to lose you both because I understood what death was at a very early age. I always told my mom and dad I loved them daily and it never stopped and I had mom's in my life the whole time and she would help me out with my epilepsy and when I had seizures she saved my life many times when going through violent seizures and the last time was in July. My mom's heard me fall over upstairs in my room and she knew to call 911 and came up and was doing CPR on me from not breathing and my face was in the carpet while my body is violently shaking from the seizures and when I came to three days later from a short coma the drs told me if my mom's didn't hear me fall over I would have passed away cause I had 9 violent seizures and they had to revive me in the hospital. Thank God for her in my life and back in April is when I found my mom unconscious on her bed with foaming out her mouth I called 911asap and saved her life then from her first stroke and she was hospitalized for a month. When mom's came home I took care of her and after a month or two her health was getting better but had to use a oxygen tank to breathe better. I thank God he let me have 5 more months with her before she passed away and I done everything I could to save her when finding my mom slumped over on her bed and thick dark blood coming out her mouth and nose, I grabbed the phone called 911 and I was doing CPR on her shaking her screaming my loudest to do anything to get her to wake up. The pandemics came quickly and took over and done everything they could to revive her and watching that happen in front of me was so painful to witness that I haven't been able to get any sleep or even eat much and I can't take myself downstairs it's too painful to be in the same room where your mom's just passed away at. My mom's was a great woman and mother and she helped others in need with food clothes shoes whatever she could and that took to us her kids that we do the same thing like she done and I helped a lot of people make sure the families in need that their kids had Xmas presents, new bikes, skateboards, new clothes, shoes, backpacks and school equipment and I thank her for giving me that because it feels great to help others in need and truly it's better to give than receive. My mom helped my dad 24/7 when he had throat cancer and she barely slept she wanted to make sure that my dad was tested with care because she had to clean out his trek about once every hour or two and he was going through chemotherapy so his health was going downhill from that. She helped him beat cancer and if my mom's wasn't their like she was he wouldn't had survived cancer not even with those house care nurse they try to hire for home care. but my dad passed away from his third heart attack and I seen the paramedics do everything they can to save his life with no success and it's hella painful knowing that I seen both parents pass away the same way with paramedics doing all they can to save them. They both will be forever missed and pops was a great man also, he was a Korean war veteran and he loved all his family and pops had me at 53 years old and mom's was 25 lol. Love ain't nothing but a number that's true and they loved each other very much and that's why I will always hold high respect for both of them especially mom's and she always helped me with my son and daughter with taking them to school, feeding them, reading to them the Bible, taking them to the park and so on. Sorry for writing so much it's just I'm in deep pain of losing her and just needed someone to listen to what I'm going through and back on Jan 16th I lost my best friend Stephen lofton he took his life in jail and he was a great friend always their for me. when I lost my brother to suicide in 96 he was their and when we were 15 our friend Michael Martinez his mom killed her gf, him and then herself and a year after that his older sister Sabrina took her life from the pain. I lost many people in my life from suicide, murder, cancer, and other health reasons I'm just glad to be here another day for my kids and if they weren't here in my life I would probably have taken my life by now from the pain of my mom's, just please keep me in your thoughts and prayers that's all I ask for from anyone who listens and thank you and God bless for your kind words I truly take it to heart. Mom's 12/15/58-09/30/23 pops 03/02/31-10/01/05

For those who don’t know this was a Vietnam War anthem. Came out in 1969. Huge hit!!! On Rolling Stone’s top 500. We felt for the soldiers of course and that stupid war but this was a positive song that even in the face of the worst you could think of the best. It’s SPIRITual.

Funny thing about this song... I've always loved this song. Sang along with it and knew all the words! I still know all the words! However, at the time that this song was released, I was in a "stage of my life" that did NOT include ANY "Man-Made religious organization" or "GOD" or "JESUS" in my life. I considered myself to be an atheist. But I liked this song and sang this song anyway! But as I grew older and much WISER... I began to realize that it was never meant for human beings to "know everything!" And it was never meant for human beings to be "perfect, sinless, holy, OR righteous!" When GOD created mankind, HE KNEW that HE was NOT creating "perfect, sinless, holy, & righteous people, because HE gave us "Freedom of Choice" so that we can "choose" for ourselves what WE want to make of our own lives. NO, WE ALL were "born into a sinful nature!" And NO ONE, NOT a single soul is "perfect, sinless, holy, OR righteous" other than JESUS! NOT EVEN ONE! Which means that "the holy Roman catholic pope" is NOT as "holy" as some people think he is. And neither is ANY other "rabbi, priest, preacher, minister, pastor, clergy member" OR ANYONE ELSE! And after I had made such a MESS of my life (by doing everything "MY" way instead of the "RIGHT" WAY) and I realized my need for Help, I turned to JESUS. And JESUS instantly forgave me of ALL of my former sins and came into my life and began working HIS LOVE into my heart! And one of the FIRST things that JESUS taught me, is that: "HE wants me to FOLLOW HIM and HIM ALONE!" HE absolutely does NOT want me to 'be religious!' HE absolutely does NOT want me to "follow ANY Man-Made religious organization!" And HE especially does NOT want me to "Follow" even one of the "thousands of versions" of SO-CALLED "christianity!" Also known as "Man-Made religious organizations!" HE wants me to "FOLLOW HIM" and HIM ALONE! HE wants me to FOLLOW HIS EXAMPLES! HE wants me to treat other people the way the HE treated other people! HE wants me to LOVE ALL people, just like HE LOVES ALL people! HE wants me to Forgive ALL people just like HE will Forgive ALL people who ask! That's why HE said: "Do to others as you WANT them to do to you" and "LOVE one another as I have LOVED YOU!" I do NOT "follow ANY Man-Made religious cult!" But I DO FOLLOW MY SAVIOR! And when (not if) I stumble or fall, I KNOW that I am forgiven! The only line in the entire song that I STRONGLY DISAGREE WITH is the first line of the last verse. "Never been a sinner, I never sinned!" YEAH, that's NOT ME! And truthfully, it's NOT anyone else either! I was definitely "a sinner" and I've "sinned" A LOT in my life. Although, I don't "sin" as much as I used to because I am trying my absolute BEST to FOLLOW MY SAVIOR! And because I'm FOLLOWING JESUS EXAMPLES, I don't sin as much as I used to, and the only time I do "sin" is when I STRAY from following HIM! And WHEN I do "sin" I am Confident that the blood of MY SAVIOR will cleanse me of that "sin!" So that "When I die, and they lay me to REST, I'm gonna go to the place that's BEST!" As SOON as JESUS returns in the "clouds of Glory" and CALLS ME from my REST and raises my body from the ashes and takes me to the Place that's BEST! But until then, I will "REST" from my earthly labors! I will SLEEP PEACEFULLY, with NO more pain, NO more sorrow, NO more tears, and NO more concerns! "So will it be with the resurrection of the dead. The body that is sown is perishable, it is raised imperishable; it is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory; it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power; it is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body. (1 Cor. 15:42-44) "Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed- in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality. When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: “Death has been swallowed up in victory. “Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?” The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1 Cor. 15:51-57)

My father did two tours in Vietnam. He passed away in his sleep 7 years ago. He was 100% disabled by the VA from Agent Orange. I grew up listening to this music. This was his favorite song and we played it at his funeral. He was an awesome dad. Being raised by a Vietnam vet was a unique experience. I miss him so much.

I was 15 when this song was released, and on holiday in Devon in England's West Country with my parents. We were staying in a farmhouse, and the owners daughter, who was about my age, invited me to a local disco with some of her friends. 54 years later I can still hear 'Spirit in the Sky' booming out. We had our lives in front of us, thought we were invincible and the future looked bright. Having been on life's roller coaster, and experienced some lovely ups and painful downs, I'm on the final leg of the journey. Songs like this can open portals to memories long forgotten. Try and enjoy every day, folks. Life goes by in the blink of an eye!

I am 70. I was a surfer girl in Socal when I first heard this song. Sure miss Seal Beach... anyway it wasn't until a few decades ago that I found out the history behind this song. Norman was/is a Jew, was stoned when he wrote the song, it was a "one hit wonder" for him, made millions and he wisely invested the money and has been living off the royalties all his life. Cool. That said I am an atheist and love this song.

We played this for my nephew's funeral 22 years ago. It is also on his headstone. I think of him every time this is played! RIP, miss you every day!

My friend passed from cancer a few yrs ago. She had picked out her music. She chose this song to be played as we were leaving the church after her memorial. ❤

Nice change of lyrics, I've always been a sinner, I've always sinned, but I got a friend in Jesus..

Listen to Dan Vasc's rendition of Amazing Grace. It's beautifully done, I cry everytime I listen to it, it's that good.
