Great weather and a great 20 mile in and out bike ride at Midewin! I started at the Hoff road access at old Chicago road. There is a parking lot there also. I rode south to the Twin Oaks trail then went west to link up with the Group 63 bunker trail. Then went west to the Iron Bridge, crossed the Iron Bridge and got on the Henslow trail. I then rode south west on the Henslow to the River road access parking lot at the other end.
There are 2 detours on this route, the first is near the Iron Bridge parking lot.It seems like they put in a detour to a viewing stand. They must have herded the buffalo in front of the stand for a public viewing!
The second is on the Henslow trail. There are a series of small bridges over streams that they must be working on. The detour is along a paved road, it was really nice and nobody was on it. It comes out at the end of the Henslow near the River road access. When the Henslow trail is reopened, I will still take the detour road now that I know where it goes. Providing that the gates are not locked.
At the River road access, there is a picnic area and restrooms. Also a large parking lot.
It was 9.7 miles one way and then I went back the same way for a total of roughly 20 miles. Some paved, some on crushed limestone trail and some on grass! It's the next best thing to being on the great plaines of Nebraska!
