When you really think about it, each game is about the ways Big Boss's legacy is passed on, not just literally via clones, but also through controlled simulations of what Big Boss (and Snake) went through, like Shadow Moses for Snake and then Big Shell for Raiden. And MGSV shows us Boss has been passing his legacy in this way even before his clones, through Venom Snake being transformed into his literal living double.

I don't think it's any coincidence that during the first mission of The Phantom Pain, Boss and Ishmael use a huge staircase to traverse the hospital, there's even a point where Ishmael goes the wrong way and quickly back tracks, passing by the Boss. The opening line 'we passed upon the stair' takes on quite a literal meaning, and once you know the ending to The Phantom Pain it's undeniable. There's plenty of instances where the lyrics literally unfold before the players own eyes, but I just like the opening line. Kojima never fails to disappoint when it comes to referencing pop culture!
