This video is the first in a complete series of tutorials where you will learn exactly how to record the sound of your digital piano or MIDI keyboard, and also how to set up and use it as a MIDI keyboard controller. So if you want to know exactly how to record piano on your computer this series of tutorial videos is for you.
This first video tutorial explores the difference between Audio and MIDI recording. This is a concept many home recording studio beginners find very confusing, but by the end of the video you will understand the difference between the two concepts. Once you understand the difference between MIDI and Audio recording , then making the connections and understanding which recording equipment and cables you should buy for your home studio will become much easier. During the course you will also get an overview of the different file formats - audio and MIDI.
In this series of videos, you will learn how to record simple MIDI and audio tracks in a digital audio workstation (DAW) and also in Audacity audio recording software. You will find out exactly which cables, connections and interfaces you will require, from real budget solutions to a higher quality (but more expensive) interface.
You will find out how to record your digital piano or keyboard on Windows PC, Mac and iPad. Most things are exactly the same across the platforms, but we will also explore the key differences in the setup. So whatever computer you want to use for your home recording, you will find out exactly how to start recording.
If you want to really find out how the basics of how to record at home, and learn how to set up a home recording studio around your keyboard or piano and need recording studio advice, then make sure subscribe to our channel so that you can follow all our tutorials as we release them.

Like Talestory JL's comment below, spent an untold number of hours over the course of roughly 2 1/2 weeks reviewing one internet (mostly KZbin) tutorial after another, yet until I found yours, Music Repo, not one addressed exactly why my midi keyboard recordings weren't recording my Korg M-3 Audio. It takes a second - separate - Audio Track to my mid track, and now everything has fallen rightly in place and my little studio workshop is finally operational (up and running)! Thank You for your clear, concise, and oh so necessary - but apparently almost always taken for granted - midi / audio recording tutorial! Thank You!

I finally understand the difference between Midid and Audio - thank you! More importantly I also now realise why there are two different formats and can see that by recording a Midi file it enables any instrument to be chosen to "play" the notes that were recorded when you first recorded your performance.

Nice video. So many don't explain things very well and your style is very clear and helpful! An (imperfect) analogy I like to use to help visualisation, is that MIDI data is a bit like the sheet music given to those whose instruments would play a performance, and audio data is the recording of the performance based on that sheet music (aka MIDI data).

Hello and thank you for these tutorials! I have a question about using a sustain pedal with a MIDI keyboard. If I were to record MIDI (not audio) to my MacBook pro via a host to USB cable, is there a way to still get the effect of the sustain pedal? Or is this only an option if I record audio via line out cables?
@MusicRepo

Hi, you should be able to record the sustain as a MIDI event, this should happen automatically as long as you do not filter out the sustain messages that are transmitted

i personally prefer MIDI recording to audio recording. 1. if i want to change a note or any note with MIDI. its very easy. if i wanted to change a note or any note with audio. i pretty much have to rerecord. 2. recording with MIDI you can change the sound used at any time. so if i used a piano sound and then later i decided, nah i'd rather use a bell sound. all i have to do is change the instrument sound. theres no need to rerecord anything. with audio if i want a different sound. i have to pick a sound i want and rerecord it. 3. theres one problem for me when it comes to MIDI recording, when i have two nexus2 plugins going, its pretty much topping out my pc power and it lags. but ive learned a way to fix it is to export the MIDI to a .WAV, because it takes less computing power to run audio than MIDI data. especially if youre playing 5 notes together and when you layer things.

Hi, thanks a lot for rhis video it's exactly what I'm looking for. I'm slightly confused by this as you don't really compare the advantages of sound v midi. I assume you can't manipulate the sound as you demonstrated with MIDI but presumably you can save midi as an mp3? If so then you don't need to record sound? I'd like to know simply what the advantages of sound recording over midi are and vice versa? Thank you.
@MusicRepo
@MusicRepo 8 жыл бұрын
+Theo well you can with MIDI you can easily change the patch and manipulate the sound, plus you can add filter sweeps, resonance etc, so there is loads you can do. It is so easy to edit, and then you can bounce down to an audio file (ie an mp3 or wav). However if you want to record live instruments or vocals, then you have no option. You need to record via a mic (acoustic instruments and vocals) or line in (for electronic keyboards etc). If you really love the sound of your keyboard then you might want to record it as an audio file - and therefore that is the main advantage of recording it in that way. But if you want it to sound different, then use it as a MIDI controller. I chiefly made this videos to help people who want to use their keyboard as part of their home recording studio but are newcomers and very confused about the difference. So one isn't better or worse than the other, they are just very different!

Hm, if you are just starting out and want something straightforward then Mixcraft is very good if you are on PC. If you want something more 'pro' then I use Reaper which is very good value for money and you can try it for 60 days for free. You can also try Pro Tools First for free and see what you think of Pro Tools which is an industry standard. Difficult to say what is 'best' as usually people like what they know! Hello, thanks so much for such an informative and short video. What I still don't get is; if I buy a digital piano which doesn't have a line out but has usb to host or midi out, will I be able to get the same voice-tone of the piano through midi in my DAW? Or will it be stock VST tone of my DAW? I mean will it be the same sound with line out, but in another (midi) format? Thank you...
@justinnaramor6050
@justinnaramor6050 Жыл бұрын
If you literally want to get the "sound" (I.E the actual sound waveform) of your keyboard into your computer, you can't even do that with MIDI... it's not possible. You'd have to somehow route the audio from your keyboard into the computer, even then you're not literally using the MIDI data to somehow trigger your keyboard's built-in sounds on your computer... it just isn't possible to do. If getting the actual sound from your keyboard into the computer is really what you want, you might as well forget about MIDI and just record with audio (line output/headphone jack on keyboard or whatever), because you'd otherwise be defeating the whole purpose of MIDI. The whole goal of MIDI is to use your keyboard to trigger sounds not built into your keyboard... the keyboard is literally controlling another source... it's acting a bit like a remote control for a television if you want to think of it that way.

What is the best set up, software, midi, to use with the Kawai VPC1 ? Does one need speakers with this set up? If so what are the clearest ones to get? Thanks
@MusicRepo
@MusicRepo 7 жыл бұрын
So the Kawai VPC1 appears to be a very high quality MIDI controller. One of the FAQ answers is "The VPC1 is a professional MIDI keyboard controller primarily intended for use with virtual piano software.". So you are going to need software that has some good virtual instruments and in particular a piano sound. You will need speakers or headphones, these should be connected to your computer or audio interface. The keyboard itself does not make a sound. The best setup will depend on the kind of music you want to create and also the sounds you want to make.

Hello - Your content on KZbin etc is really excellent - beautifully produced, clear and thorough. I am not sure how I came upon it - probably as a result of a question I posed as a Google Search. I wonder if you can help me with a specific question. I have no keyboard skills but a good ear for music and I am keen to explore methods of getting some of my noodling onto my PC purely for my own amusement. I recently bought FL12 and I also have a copy of Ableton Live which for my purposes seems rather over complicated. I recently bought a Yamaha DGX digital piano and I have it set up so that the Yamaha can “talk” to FL 12 but iIt seems to me that many of the voices on the Yamaha are superior to the VST instruments currently available to me on FL12.. Whilst the Yamaha has a recording facility I am wondering if you can advise if it is possible to capture the Yamaha voices using the Pianoroll feature in FL 12 if you see what I mean? Or can I only record the FL12 VST instruments using the Pianoroll. Any advice would be much appreciated.
@MusicRepo
@MusicRepo 7 жыл бұрын
+hibberdmedia if you want to record the sound of your piano in FL Studio, you will have to have at least the Producer Edition that can allow you to record audio tracks and also record the piano via an audio interface. If your piano has an integrated recording facility, then you could record the sound and then transfer it ... have a look at the piano's manual to see what it says about this. Glad you like the videos, you might like to see all my others here on how to record your piano www.musicrepo.com/keyboard-course-resources/
@hibberdmedia
@hibberdmedia 7 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much for your prompt and helpful reply. Yes, I have the Producer Edition of FL. The DXG650 does have an integrated recording facility - it is possible to record to a WAV file but the manual doesnt tell me if it can record direct to the Pianoroll feature of FL which I would need to get rid of my mistakes. Also I had hoped that if I could record to Pianoroll I could then copy and paste clips to buid up a sort of "orchestration".
@MusicRepo
@MusicRepo 7 жыл бұрын
hibberdmedia the Pianoroll view (I don't know FL Studio in detail, so making an assumption) will be a MIDI thing so you will connect your Yamaha up using USB and use it as a controller in this instrument. I am sure what you want to do will be possible - I suggest you refer to the Yamaha manual to make the MIDI connection, then the FL Studio online guides to work through how to use the Pianoroll.

What I'm still confused about is the kind of connection to use. I have an SSL interface that has MIDI. I would like to use a Korg SV1 that has MIDI out to use as a masterkeyboard, and record MIDI into the DAW thru the SSL. After that, I will use Pianoteq software in the DAW to play different piano sounds. Am I thinking this through correctly?

Hey, I'm a bit confused. I would love to post some music cover's on KZbin. I don't know how to record it exactly? This video definitely helped! But I was wondering... I have a condenser mic. How would I record that and my keyboard? Would my vocals and piano sound balanced? Also, I have an audio interface that I plug my mic chord into. Is there a chord I need for my piano to plug into that?
@MusicRepo
@MusicRepo 8 жыл бұрын
If your audio interface has line input as well as microphone input then you should be able to connect the audio output of the piano to the input of the interface and record it. This video might help kzbin.info/www/bejne/mXzTqpl9mMyGhNk If you want to record vocals as well, then if your interface has enough inputs you could technically record both at once. The issue you might have, though, if your condenser mic is quite sensitive, is that it may pick up the sound of the piano keys etc. But nothing wrong with experimenting and giving it a go. If you position the mic correctly it might be fine if you want to sing and play at the same time.

Hi Maam... I have some query. I have a music workstation Korg Nautilus. Which I recently purchased. 1) I want to rec the inbuilt sound of the keyboard in laptop Fl Studio DAW.. Is it must to have a Audio interface to do so via connecting through TRS cable. Is it that if we use midi to Usb only we can't rec the inbuilt sound.??? 2 ) I want to use it as midi controller too. Like controlling Vst from it. Which I am able to do so in Fl Studio.. But the output of the sound is from my laptop speakers and not My Studio monitor.. The Aux cable is connected to speaker output. But.... From India.. Thanks

I only have a midi to USB cable, but I want to use the sounds on my keyboard, NOT the sounds on my garageband. Is is possible to switch the settings so my keyboard tones come through?

Very informative thanks. But I have a question. If I record with my digital piano, and then I use a USB pen drive to move the file to my computer, is it possible to put that audio in the video without converting it to mp3? I see that a lot of recordings softwares don't support the Midi format. And the quality decreases if I convert the audio to mp3...

If you can record the audio of your digital piano onto pen drive, you should be able to import into video editing software. But if it is only MIDI then you will have to convert it to audio one way or another

I'm very new to digital recording and have only recently purchased an audio interface (Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 gen 3) which is great but it doesn't have midi sockets on the back. (I wish I'd come across your videos before buying as I could have gone for the 2i4 instead ............ but lesson learned. So I have a question: can I record midi from my Yamaha PSR S770 keyboard into my Mac via the Scarlett 2i2? If so, how can I do this and what cables will I need please?

You will have to connect your Yamaha keyboard separately, you just need a USB lead as it has USB MIDI connection. It will work alongside your interface, but you won't be able to make a MIDI connection through the interface. Hope that helps

Hi Jane. So, connect the keyboard via USB directly to my Mac and then presumably the Midi file created can be saved and imported into my Daw, which is Reaper? I'm also new to Reaper but thankfully you've done videos on that too, so I reckon I'll be watching a lot of your videos over the holiday period! :-)) Thanks again - Robert

@@dalroth10 yes, if you are using USB to transfer MIDI files. Otherwise, you'll be using Reaper (or any other DAW) to record MIDI tracks as you play. This page and associated video may help. It demonstrates how to record the sound of your keyboard and create a MIDI track at the same time. You may just wish to create MIDI tracks, you can still see how to do that here www.musicrepo.com/record-audio-and-midi/

@@MusicRepo Thanks again for your advice. I've connected my Yamaha keyboard to my Mac but struggling to work out how to generate and send a midi file. I can record the audio file OK but not midi - any ideas on what I'm doing wrong please?

I need help. I have a korg Kross music workstation, and I have used the program audacity for years. I have plugged in the audio cable where this and other videos in this series have mentioned, but all that starts to record are the sounds around me. Nothing is coming from the piano. I tried the different microphone options near the top of the screen (my options there are "microsoft sound mapper", "microphone", and "stereo mix") but I am still getting the same results. Thanks in advance for the help!

+PhantoMace2012 it sounds as if your computer is recording from the internal microphone. are you sure the port where you are plugging in the cable is a microphone port?

I'm using Audacity. Is there no way to record and play the sound of your keyboard using the usb connector? The only line out I have is the headphone jack, but I don't have a daw yet.

If you have a lovely piano you want to record the sound of .... audio. If you have a very good plugin and a less good piano .... MIDI.

@@MusicRepo thank you dear, I have s good digital piano Yamaha dgx 660. It is just that when I try to record audio I sometimes feel like the sound is a bit blurry when I play fast on mid lower keys. I am unsure how to set the input volumes other than it should not turn red on the indicators. I am worries the output volume will be to low in the final results. I am planning to buy min grand plug in/ vst. I hope my thoughts and questions will serve you, as well for another idea to your videos. Thank you for your answer. You are welcome to give me a feedback on my question above.

Hi, you should get good results with a high quality VST. But make sure you optimise all your audio settings to minimise any latency issues.
