Midjourney Prompt Groups & Weights Tutorial

Today I am going to cover Weights & Groups in Midjourney and why you should be using them to make better AI art.

Why do you not use "--no blemishes, logo, text, signature" ? Is there a specific reason or is the effect the same?

Good catch. I should have focused a bit more on that in the video. Giving a group a negative weight is pretty much the same as using the negative prompt "--no xxx"

I just started playing with :: today before I saw this video. The info on MJ is a bit obtuse and noisy. Thanks for clarifying! Now back to MJ with a better understanding of crafting prompts with ::

Good stuff. I never thought of using the :: to establish groups. I liked the full body shot. If you had that plus the lighting you wanted I think it would of been a better image. The fact full body is placed at the beginning and it had a weight of 5, I'm surprised that MJ didn't render the full body shot.

Liked and subscribed. Can you do a tutorial on reoccurring multiple characters in one scene. I have found a few tricks but they are complex and takes some RNG.

If you've defined a group as negative (--no ...), would you not give it a positive weighting?

That's a good point. Would it be a double negative? I did notice that if I don't use the "--no xxx" prompt, but I use a negative weight, sometimes the negative prompts will still show in the image. I'll have to play with that a bit more.

@@aijohnart, I've read in the online documentation that the parameter "--no" is the equivalent of assigning a group a weight of -0.5. If --no doesn't get rid of the thing you don't want in your image, try assigning the group a negative weight that is more negative than -0.5. I like -0.8, but you can go as negative as you want. One thing to note however is that the sum of all your weights can't be less than zero, in fact, it starts to get wonky if you even get close to zero. So try to make sure all your negative items are in the same group so you don't have to add multiple negatives. (though there may be instances where you want things negated to different degrees, in which case just make sure your positives add up to more than your negatives.) And to answer the question about having "--no" in a group that gets a negative weighting, e.g., "::-1", from my own observations you can have both in a prompt string, but it will see the parament indication "--" first and treat "--no" correctly as a parameter which itself conveys a negative weight of -0.5 And because "--no" is a parameter and not a prompt, it can't be weighted further with "::" In short you get -0.5 negative weighting from "--no" and the "::" negative weighting will be ignored.

With that prompt, all 4 items are being added to the negative prompt list. The way Midjourney works with negative prompts is "-no item1, item2, ", etc.I hope that makes sense. Let me know.

I only get truly pointed ears rarely. Though, if you don't mind the anime style, using "--niji" at the end of your prompt line will get you a good looking elf.

I didn't explain that, did I? :) Dnd stands for Dungeons and Dragons.

That is an interesting idea. Though, ChatGPT's newest data is from about 2 years ago, so it really doesn't know what Midjourney is or how to effectively make prompts.

@@aijohnart I actually did get the chat program to automate a template for me. It's especially nice to be able to ask it for specific lighting recommendations, angles, or types of film. Thank you for making the video with all of the suggestions in it!

@@aijohnart It works but you first have to prime ChatGPT and warm it up a little. In the starting message in a new chat window explain saying like "Today you are going to be an AI Artist. By that, you're going to follow an ART PROMPT structure to create art. You are going to take my art requests and best try to visualize that artwork with a word prompt.". Then explain in a simple paragraph how the Midjourney weighting works. You can copy the midjourney documentation even but I wrote it myself. Say something in your words like "::x" works where value x represents a weight from 0 to 5 with 5 being more prominent. Then show it 3 prompt examples (including weights). Finally end the prompt with "Now, before we do anything else, tell me if you understand." and press reply. (Save the prompt for later use) ChatGPT will reply back with a message that it understood and is ready to take your request. Now you can say something like "generate me a prompt for "The Goddess of the Hunt" and you'll start see the magic. It definitely needs a helping hand in pruning and changing some tags but it generates beautiful starting works! Thanks again for your videos!

Pure rng and this prompt grouping made 0 difference. Multiprompting does nothing but screw up an image concept. Do not use it.
