this tune (and basically the first half of this album) is required listening for me. daily.

Hope you're digging "Bethel Woods". Yes, they don't release music as quickly as we'd like, but when they do, awesome! I'm 62, when old farts complain about how new music sucks, its because they are too lazy to look...

i really love the richness of the chords in this song. what is Antiphon? is it a name? i must find out…
@dikeroc10 жыл бұрын
It's a Greek word meaning a chanting sung consequently by two different chanters usually in religious ceremonies.
@kpec310 жыл бұрын
Oh ok. Thanks for the response. I'm Christian, and probably should avoid religious chants. Maybe it's ok. No, I'd better be safe.
@jomarthegreat110 жыл бұрын
***** an antiphon can be as simple as a call and response. (the last couple words in the song kind of allude to it, actually...) for example, in a Catholic church service, when the reader reads and then pauses, the congregation usually says the response. Antiphons need not be solely religious chants or call/responses, though.
@theresak.74757 жыл бұрын
I believe this song purposes to call-out the religious hypocrisy of churches such as the Russian Orthodox church - with their emotionally attractive and ornate-sounding, antiphon music singing choirs; gold-embroidered robes, and other "impressive", outward "show" trappings - but who then teach anti-scriptural, deceptive LIES; and practice and promote God and Christ-condemned EVIL works, to the service of Satan - such as to go "fight a war" (and to ban and persecute TRUE Christians!) I understand that sentiment. I actually wanted to learn the mode of this antiphon music, to write a song in opposition to the lies and evil being worked by some of these churches; but then I just now discovered that someone else has already done such a thing! Bravo!!!!! "Babylon the Great has fallen!" (It's not the mode of chant music in itself that's bad - but the messages or purposes of it can be bad. This song hijacks that mode, to send a truthful message [at least, that's how I understand this song].)

Listen from 2.30 and you could be forgiven for thinking you were listening to something from the earlier days of Yes. Bands often draw inspiration from multiple sources, in the process, doing something different to make it their own. This does not mean they are any more or any less creative than those they borrowed inspiration from. Only discovered this band today after discovering another band I'd never heard of, White Denim. It's nice to see that decent bands still exist because the likes of Miley Cyrus and that flipping tongue had me thinking good music was becoming a distant memory :(
@ShengyingXu10 жыл бұрын
+Clément Loewenthal sorry to have ruined your listening... what i really meant was, "it's been many years since I last heard their music, and listening to them now take me right back to 2006, the year I first listened to them, also a very special year for me" thanks you +Tom Shaw !

ooh that sad little twat who thinks this sounds like the beatles (and listens to 'keane', dear god, how that makes me laugh). No, if at all, this might glean from bands where the musicians could actually play: CREAM, BLIND FAITH, BUFFALO SPRINGFIELD...down the Jethro Tull. But to be honest, these incredibly talented jazz musicians (Midlake) make rock like no other.
@maddywalker11 жыл бұрын
heeeeey!!!! I listen to keane too!! you can´t put all the people in same bag for that! There will always be brainless ones!! Forgetting that, I agree with you in all the rest >:D
@highestsettings10 жыл бұрын
If you seriously believe that the Beatles can't play, then you're an idiot. Especially when you then list Cream and Buffalo Springfield as if those musicians can play better. They can play incredibly well, they chose to make simple music, because simplicity offers it's own charm. Taste is subjective, however the fact that the Beatles are good musicians is an objective fact, regardless of whether you like their music or not. Anyway you take music way too seriously, it's just sounds not a religion.

@BohemianConspiracy11 жыл бұрын
yeah it's a kinda ridiculous statement...it's even more sounding like Yes around 1970 than the beatles... but imo it's more fleet foxes meet early Pink Floyd... even if it is just distant comparisons of course... Midlake new sound is original enough on it's own...
