Things this radio needs to be highly successful in sales would be: -Repeater capable (An absolute must) -FRS channel monitor of the 8-14 FRS channels (Would just be nice to have) -Removable microphone (In case it breaks, just replace the mic and not a radio) -Weather receive

Hi Jack, the demo model we reviewed seems to be up to standards for use on the GMRS. Since the radio is not even on the market yet, how did you determine it to be a "poor" radio? Do you have a demo model? If so, we would be interested in comparing notes for a fair evaluation.
@BuyTwoWayRadios9 жыл бұрын
***** There are only a few websites promoting it with the pricing but it's for pre-order only. Pricing was announced months ago, so posting the product online for pre-order is not unusual, but it doesn't mean it is currently available. The radio itself has not shipped to retailers yet. Midland shipped a demo unit to us specifically for this video, which is why we have one to evaluate and review.

I know this is an ancient video, but just in case anyone is watching this in 2022. The FRS/GMRS rules changed in 2017. Now there are no specific FRS channels. A GMRS radio with a removable antenna can transmit on those channels as long as that transmission can be limited to 1/2 watt.

These things sell for around $150.00 on Amazon - no repeater capability, only 5 watts out OR you can get a full featured mobile 400-470 Mhz mobile Baofeng BF-9500 with 50 Watts out and full repeater capability for $115.00. Truly a no-brainer.
@BuyTwoWayRadios8 жыл бұрын
+tophtml1 We sell the MXT100 as well. However, keep in mind that the Baofeng is not Part 95 type accepted for use on the GMRS. The MXT100 is Part 95 type accepted. That is the real difference between this and many other mobile radios.
@tophtml18 жыл бұрын
+BuyTwoWayRadios Yes, it appears that you are right about Part 95 acceptance for the Midland V. the Baofeng. I'm more than just a little disappointed, however, in the lack of a feature set in the Midland for the price point and I would feel better served to buy a blister pack GMRS.
@BuyTwoWayRadios8 жыл бұрын
tophtml1 It also depends on how you want to use the radio. If it's for mobile use, I would think the MXT100 would easily have the edge over handhelds in a blister pack, simply with the advantage of an external antenna. As far as range goes, antenna placement can be a much more critical factor than wattage in many scenarios, especially when used in a vehicle. The antennas on a GMRS handheld are fixed, which means the signal will be reduced greatly when enclosed by metal and glass. Mounting the antenna outside the vehicle, with the added advantage of using the metal top or hood to serve as a ground plane, will increase range significantly. The same can be said for its use as a base station with the right antenna mount.
@tophtml18 жыл бұрын
+BuyTwoWayRadios You're absolutely right. The problem I have with this radio is that, at 5 watts, being a mobile, it almost begs for repeater capability which it does not have. External antennas are great in efficiency and keeping the VSWR down, however repeater capabilities would complete this radio. At 5 watts, Midland should have provided repeater capability. I wouldn't be surprised if they upgraded this radio in the future to provide repeater capabilities. They have the concept, form factor and FCC Type Acceptance correct, now they need to finish the job.

A GMRS handheld hooked to an external antenna will perform as well as the Midland. The current model is the MXT-105 which sells for $100. That's about the same price as a Part 95 GMRS handheld, so it may be worth it to have a mobile radio and not have to fiddle with the handheld power and antenna connection. If you're going to get one, spend the money to get a good mobile antenna. The one that comes with the radio is no better than a handheld rubber antenna and will really limit your range.

Just from a curiosity standpoint: I've been reading about some UHF mobile radios which are Part 95 certified, and which have an output of 40 Watts, and from my understanding, for the most part the power limit for GMRS is 50 Watts, so why did Midland make a GMRS-specific mobile radio and then skimp on power? I honestly would like to know why this radio would be considered advantageous over something with nearly 5 times the power and around the same price-point, plus the ability to program in other UHF channels.

When we first received the sample MXT100, the rubber boot around the end of the hand speaker mic was deeply embedded in the port. There was no official documentation included with the sample radio, and not wanting to risk damaging the unit out of the box, we decided to leave it alone. We didn't try to pull the boot out of the port, so it was surmised that the hand speaker mic was not intended to be unplugged. However, after the video was completed and released, we pulled out the boot and discovered that the hand speaker mic was indeed removable.

+101southsideboy The MXT100 has a standard SO-239 (UHF Female) antenna connector, so you can attach a third party antenna if you want. However, a CB radio antenna will not work because it is not tuned to the same frequencies. I'll stick with my commercial LMRS Icom and Vertex Standard radios. The mobiles output 50 watts and the HTs do 4 to 5 watts. All of them can be programmed for repeater use. Since the HTs have replaceable antennas, they too can be attached to a good mobile or base antenna. The only thing this MTX100 has going for it is the antenna connector. Bubblewrapped GMRS radios come with a non-removeable total POS antenna that is little more than a dummy load! They likely have a (negative) -5 dB gain or worse. But the MTX100 could actually use a high gain antenna. But the lack of repeater use and the lack of CTCSS/DCS code direct programming make it of little value to anyone but the uninitiated who know almost nothing about radios.

Carlos Alberto Serna Valle Range is relative to a combination of factors, and your range will vary depending on your particular application, environment and scenario. No offense but big name brands throw their name around to give out featureless overpriced radios like this. 5 watts for a base station? Really? I'm not a big power guy, I frequently run 1-8watts on my base station but on UHF you need more than 5watts if you want to reach out, especially if there are no repeaters and lets face it, amateur radio repeaters beat GMRS repeaters 10:1, all the GMRS repeaters around here are "Club members only" or some BS like that, yeah great for survival friendly communications. Midland could have easily gotten part 95 certified with 10watts or 25watts or 50watts and some other features like MURS (with a 2watt limit programmed in) and 2-meter band and 70cm band support, or even just 70cm band with more power. People say "OMG the BaoFeng's aren't certified for this" or "I wouldn't trust that brand with my life" but I have yet to hear about a BaoFeng failing like many people describe. The fact that this does not have repeater capability is miserable, really I mean come on. I don't normally type up negative posts like this but people can do so much better.

He said _"adds some real excitement to the GMRS"_ without even cracking a grin. This is without a doubt the most basic and uninspiring radio ever developed... no features... not one! If they dropped just one more feature from the spec, it would cease to be a radio! How the heck can anyone say this is an exciting shakeup to the general mobile radio service - and walk away with any dignity, integrity or credibility intact ??? ... they can't. The truth is, if THIS radio is the answer, then you've clearly not understood the question. There isn't a single use case where this radio would be recommended over the rest of the field - not one. Other radios pack in far more features, and often for much less money. As far as I'm concerned, BuyTwoWayRadios just shat on their own cornflakes. Clearly these box-shifting cowboys will say anything to get a sale... they have no pride, no integrity and no credibility. Avoid them like the plague! There are MANY fine radio outlets, with knowledgeable staff that love the hobby and won't just fob you off with lazy _'side of the box'_ sales patter. @BuyTwoWayRadios6 жыл бұрын
Gary, I'm sorry that you feel this way. The exciting thing about the MXT100 was that, when it was released, there weren't any other true GMRS radios (FCC part 95 type accepted) in a mobile form factor. Basically, if you wanted a new and fully legal GMRS mobile, you were out of luck. Even with handhelds new GMRS-only radios weren't really available, outside of buying older used equipment. New "GMRS" radios were dual service with FRS, so they didn't have removable antennas. This is still primarily the case today, although there are some true GMRS HTs that have been introduced in the last couple of years. With the MXT100 though, you have three features that were difficult or impossible to find on a single new radio: 1) FCC approved for GMRS use; 2) mobile; 3) removable antenna. Granted, this radio was missing a couple of features that many enthusiasts wanted, such as higher power and repeater support, but I strongly disagree that "there isn't a single use case where this radio would be recommended." I'm not the only one with this opinion - the MXT100 was a successful enough product that Midland was convinced to expand the line. They added the MXT105 (which replaced this MXT100), the MXT115 (15 watts with repeater support), and the MXT400 (40 watts, business quality radio).

GMRS has been around since 1987 and there were plenty of fully legal radios ... many of which could already handle repeaters. All the MXT100 marked was the change of individual licensing, which was a bit of a re-launch for the existing service. The TK-880H (45w, Part 95) and TK-880 (25w, Part 95) were packed full of features, full legal, high power and kicked the midlands ass into a basket. Even the GM 300 were a better choice .... meanwhile the midland was getting its ass kicked by basic HT's and even equipment going back a decade! Sure, they sold a lot of 'em ... they currently sell a lot of PMR's with _"Up to 30 mile range"_ printed on the blister pack. Doesn't make either a good buy. I remember the whole thing being met with a disappointed yawn. The MXT100 sorely lacked features, and didn't bring anything new to the table at all... heck, barely even brought anything current. Sure, Midland called it exciting. Some reviewers parroted the midland line ... but most folk found it a thoroughly underwhelming product. Look, I have Autism and I tend to see things in a rather black-and-white way. I also have a tendancy to be a little harsh ... ... but there is no universe in which this radio was ever exciting. I notice mrgclips, below, pretty much sums up the unit. Including his conclusion which was pretty much the response of every honest reviewer out there... _"What on earth was Midland thinking !"_ Looking further down the list, I see a lot of people calling this radio out for being bland, featureless, overpriced junk. Most independent reviewers at the time criticised it for exactly the same reasons. There is no way this was ever an 'exciting' radio. It came in at the bottom of the pack, lacking features, lacking performance and way overpriced. Made all the more disappointing because of it's name and the pre-release hype. To publicly call it exciting, you really must have needed to shift a lot of boxes. That's all I can say.
