“Midnight Beat,” a popular staple for the band during their sets at The Django, recalls the work of figures like Bob Mintzer, and its muscular call-and-response between brass and reeds hints at Basie-esque qualities too. While Feifke seduces with the song’s inescapably fun groove (with a boost from the inspired drumming of Bryan Carter), he also rewards your close listening with unusual harmonic tricks and clever shifts in key. Inspired solos by Dan Chmielinski and Alexa Tarantino help to round out a truly glorious close to the album’s set.
