I would correct one point : the death of the priest Pruitt in his office. I don't think it was due to an overconcentration of the demon's blood in his body. He died spitting a bloody foam, just like the dog that was poisonned. So I think it was Bev who poisoned him. Episode 3 she saw the picture of him younger and seemed to realize who he is. Later, we see her putting a box of poison back in the closet, without knowing what she did with it. We also see her filling the priest's fridge with food she prepared. I think she wanted to test the miracle she understood of the priest being the Chosen One.

I love that Hill House had ghosts with an emphasis on perception vs reality and benevolently witchy women who all felt some level of self-doubt or self-loathing (the maternal grandmother, Olivia, Shirley, Theo, and Nell all had some degree of supernatural abilities and/or sensitivities), while Bly Manor focused exclusively on ghosts and played with the concept of self and what it means to be both stuck in a self-destructive cycle and unstuck in time (thanks for the line, Vonnegut). Now we have literal vampires as a metaphor for alcoholism, addiction to/the weaponization of religion, and fear spreading like a virus that feeds on us all. Straight up monsters aren't top tier scary anymore- they're so much more effective when they represent a more universal threat or fear, like The Babadook, It Follows, or The VVitch. Well done, Flanagan!

I really like how the word vampire wasn't mentioned not once in the series. When Leeza gets up from the wheelchair, it was hard to make the connection. You could kind of figure out that there was some kind of vampire-like influence but how? Was the vampire glamouring people and turning them but why isn't she burning up in the sun? The reveal was definitely satisfying. I also appreciate blending Catholic lore with horror, this is what made the Excorcist one of the scariest films I've ever seen. Also, the sermons were very realistic and charismatic, most films that include church sermons or preaching are very flat and miss the mark entirely. Father Paul Hill was actually charismatic and the sermons were well written. I binged this entire thing on Saturday and I was not disappointed.

I thought the most powerful scene in the whole series was when Riley experiences the sun rise & opens his eyes only to see the beautiful young woman he killed 4 years earlier take his hand & lead him to what’s next. The scene cuts to material life & he’s burning up & Erin, horrified, screams in terror & agony. In the end Riley was wrong about death & it was his choice to willfully die without knowingly killing to feed. Same with many of the community members. They were innocent in getting turned to vampires. I felt compassion for Monsignor Pruitt throughout the series. The feeling of unfinished business at the end of his old aged life. He didn’t ask to be turned either. The long long long monologues felt draining for me at certain points. The hypocrisy & cowardice of some of the characters leaves those monologues from them pathetic & desperate.

I really loved Riley's Death - the juxtaposition of him finally feeling at peace as he takes the hand of the girl he couldn't forgive himself for killing, against what actually happened to him and Erin looking on in horror. My favorite moments are either Erin’s internal monologue at her demise that effectively describes ~~pantheism~~ or a beautiful variation of it. Or the moment at midnight mass when Father Paul finally introduces his “little angel” dressed in his best Easter Day outfit. The inversion & all other tools used in this series cut deep, make you think, and give quite possibly one of the best vampire stories I’ve viewed in 20 years. I think the literal monsters in the story serve to accentuate the evil in people like Bev, in a world of vampires she was the most evil character. While the townsfolk accepted their fate and chose to meet their end in peace, in the end, Bev didn't stand by her own morals and principles instead in vain choosing to escape with her life. As for the literal monster in the story, my guess it's a fallen angel with many names but probably is the basis for the vampire legend in the context of the story.

Just three flaps seem to show it covering nearly a mile. Honestly, I think its survival will depend solely on whether or not Netflix wants a season two. LOL
@tclass992 жыл бұрын
The whole point of them showing Erin “clipping the angel’s wings” was to suggest that he wouldn’t have been able to fly away to avoid the sunrise. Leeza losing feeling in her legs confirms the idea that the vamp died in the sun.

I like that the word "vampire" was never mentioned during the entire series. Such a smart story and I suspect that there will be a sequel because of the success of this wicked series! Loved it! @TheOnlyLordRah3 жыл бұрын
IDK y'all I feel like most people totally miss the point that the vampire still could also be an angel. Pruitt at the end wasn't like "I now see that there is no way you are a work of God! This stuff going down could never have been in his plan". No, instead he was more like "in god's plan or no, damned to hell or no, angel or vampire, I am not doing this anymore. Fuck all this - I'm mourning." It is funny that so many people watch the people in the show doing what the vampire wants and think "Idiots! CLEARLY this vampire dude isn't an angel because he's doing spooky mean stuff!" When like... I feel like the show does a pretty good job of posing the more complex question of "what if God wants you to do something bad? Does a divine power wanting it make it a moral choice? Or should you try to be a good person, regardless of the afterlife or the plans of some divine being?"
@russelturner57712 жыл бұрын

@TheOnlyLordRah2 жыл бұрын
@@russelturner5771 That is a valid reading and could be the case, yes, but what I'm saying is that just because he was a murdering scary monster doesn't mean he wasn't ALSO an angel sent by God to do those very things. It's not like doing seemingly cruel things to humans and wiping out huge parts of human populations would be totally out of character for God (especially old testament), as is pointed out many times in the script for the show. I'm just not convinced "he's feeding on people and animals" precludes him from being an angel, given how actual biblical descriptions of angels veer more towards lovecraftian horror than pretty tree toppers. So yes, the monster could just be a vampire pretending to be an angel, but also maybe it was sent by God to do His work - maybe God's work is just super messed up and scary and... not good? So instead of just asking "how could people be so blind to think this monster is an angel", we are left with the more interesting question of "should we not do 'bad' stuff, no matter who asks us?", or put another way; "does God wanting something make it moral?" I would be interested on your thoughts :)

Good series and good review. Flanagan changes a lot of the "Catholic"vampire mythos. Theay are supposed to be demons occupying dead corpses much as demons possess living humans. They are supposed to be repelled by crosses and holy water. A vampure should not be able to enter consecrate ground and the idea that a vampire can touch a consecrated host or wine is problematic.
@keeahrahr33112 жыл бұрын
The idea of a demon/monster/fallen angel who can is much more terrifying and drives home the rhetorical meaning of the series. Bev mentions "sheep among wolves" more than once and in the end most of the vampire townspeople realize that they are the wolves (I can't remember which character says that explicitly). To be a truly convincing wolf in sheep's clothing, you're better off if you also truly believe it like the Monseigneur did. Over and over again the point is made that the church can be misinterpreted and therein lies the danger.

Good points! The other point is that vampires in ye olde folklore could walk around in daylight and sunlight was never lethal to them (think of Gary Oldman's purple shades as he stalks Winona Ryder in a sunny London) and that concept was only popularised by Nosferatu back in 1922 who 'invented' the daylight kills in an ultimately unsuccessful attempt to stave off legal action over copyright by the Stoker family.

I really liked this one a lot, but I thought there was a dramatic shift in tone right at the end. It's like everyone became stupid. No one thought to dig a hole or create some temporary sun shelter. You could argue some people were horrified at their actions and lost the will to survive, but all of them? Church lady thought about it, but it only dawned on her seconds from sunrise and she didn't bother using a shovel. I can tell you right now, as soon as that shelter caught on fire, I'd be looking for a shovel, duct tape, tarps, pieces of un-burned house, or anything I could find to make a temporary sun block where I could wait out the day so I could make something more functional once the sun went down. Maybe becoming a vampire takes a hard toll on your reasoning skills? Also can't believe they all thought it was a good idea to burn all the shelters except one. How could that ever backfire? Despite my complaints, I really did like the show though. Thought it was mostly fantastic. Really had that cinematic quality, and was a nice slow burn that created a great atmosphere.

It's possible the angel fell into the depths of the ocean and avoided the sunlight and was reborn at night. A sequel could explore the investigation that happens after the ending. Rileys brother most likely gets to the mainland and informs the police, and they probably laugh at him. Then, a detective friend of Hassans looks into it and finds the remains of the burnt buildings, and people's clothes and investigates, thinking it was some cult thing (which it was). The angels returns and maybe goes to the mainland trying to start over. Could be interesting, but probably not as good as the first series.

But it made the narrative play out so I understand why they did that. But yeah if you know you will die you will try ANYTHING to survive.

I think they were ashamed at that point, after hours of binge killing people. They just were ready to go.

The only question I would have is: why do the effects of the blood dissipate? If the blood healed her legs, why isn't the effect permanent? For example, the blood healed the girl of her pregnancy. Would she all of sudden become pregnant again? It would be like saying the blood helped me grow a bone. Does that one particular bone just disappear once the blood is out of my system?

I understood it as the "angel" died and once he's dead maybe his blood doesn't work anymore

You're asking too many questions. It's there to move the plot forward, nothing more. I hated 65% of this show.

@@superkillr If you hated it so much, why continue to watch it? Seems to me like you are still heavily involved in a show you hated 65% of. Must not hate it that much if you are on this video and reading comments.

,,There is no self" - the most important line in this story. The experience of a separate self who dies in the end, is the greatest myth of all times. A myth that hides paradise.

Remeber pazuzu the demon from the exorcist came even from the east. And humas fear angels. Even satan was an angel.

So many people cant accept that the reason why the word 'vampire' never mentioned, is to make you think that ot Could Be an actual angel. I liked this show that it leaves this question open. My opinion is that it was an angel and that god is even more terrifying

It was a vampire though lol

The final episode is one of the worst series' endings of all TV. You can reason it all you want, but it's a lazy mess.

You have the right to your opinion, but that's laughable.

Unpopular Opinion : Mike Flanagan's Stories are way more interesting and well executed in horror/thriller genre in contemporary times. Otherwise all the other movies are simply filled with random jump scares and loud noise 😐

The angel attacking "mom" in the church is pretty loud noisish ..great effect
@goswamipratibha20102 жыл бұрын
@@billbill8355 it was nice. I meant, many horror movies or series only use loud Jump scares. Here, we see good plot as well, hence the jump scare wasn't meaningless

He says he left it up to God and we’re supposed to be happy with that answer. I need details.

Great show! My only nitpick is that the cat eye effects seemed to come and go when needed. Any light it the darkness would reflect off of their eyes, but only some people have it and only when it seems to look cool for the movie.

I like how the first time we see it is when Riley’s changed, almost like we’re seeing this new world through his eyes - as we’d been following him up until that point.

Thank you so much for breaking down the plots and episodes one by one. Making it easy to understand what the show was ultimately about. Heavy Spoiler talks in circles, which is so confusing.
