as someone who reads a lot about abrahamic religions, i never actually seen it as a vampire, i just assumed that it was a fallen angel (demon) from the begining and the whole sun weakness and blood drinking are just symptoms of him being a literal mockery of regular angel -it is said in ancient jewish texts that angels were casted down into great, dark caves uder ground (the cave where we meet him) -it is said that they are banished from the light and "may they never see the sun again" (they die from light) -it is said that they are a mockery of god (they literally mock the resurrecton of christ by reviving people as monsters and mock the eucharist by drinking their own corrupted blood instead of the blood of christ, the demon in the show also chooses to use a man of faith as his tool to kill a whole flock of his followers) -it is said that they are deceiving (literally tricks an entire town of people into commiting suicide) Vampires are kinda just an extension of what christians would call a demon if you think about it that way (but not entirely ofc, the original and earliest tales of vampires from slavic mythology (wąpierz) describe that vampires were once humans who were cursed during life, but you get what i mean)

He mentioned early many ancient ruins had been uncovered by the recent storms, I’m thinking this was a ruin from the time of the ancient Assyrians or something even older, as many of their deities and what we would even call demons were pictured with wings of a sort. Perhaps this was one of them that they could not kill and so had to imprison it somehow so they built the tomb to contain it.

The angel clearly understood English but never actually spoke the language, communicating only through primal shrieks. This was because the angel never learned to control its primal desires, such as its need to drink blood. In contrast, Riley's parents demonstrated self-control over their innate urge to drink blood, having practiced and developed self-discipline. The angel didn't actually need to drink blood, but its mind constantly chose to abandon any semblance of restraint, rendering it incapable of doing otherwise. One notable example of the angel's lack of self-control occurred when Erin cut its wings. Although the angel noticed the injury, Erin pushed its head back into her blood, causing the angel to completely forget about its wounded wings. The angel's failure to practice even a small fraction of self-control ultimately led to its demise.

It's interesting that a curse like vampirism is given a scientific explanation in Midnight Mass, which kinda makes sense to a layman. Of course, if there was a God and it decided to curse someone then it would just be an insanely advanced virus or something that wouldn't make sense to us which I find interesting and would have endless possibilities in fiction. If someone from 2000 years ago saw us in our world today, they may consider us to be of some higher power. Guillermo Del Toro's THE STRAIN has the seven original vampires, known as The Ancients, as manifesting from the original angel who was killed and torn into seven individual pieces for the unforgivable crime of killing his angel brother so to drink his blood (which was silver, so in life silver hurts them). They, The Ancients, must also maintain and keep the dirt/soil from which they landed after being torn apart and cast down. They also cannot cross over moving water by themselves. My two-cents: The Creature is a vampire that inspired the myth of angels. Monsignor Pruitt discovered the Creature in ruins buried beneath the sands of Jerusalem, where it could've been trapped for centuries. The Creature spared Pruitt only after it heard his prayers, which seems to imply it knew of Pruitt's Christian faith. I'd further speculate it not only knew about Christendom but also played a hand in its founding. The Creature weaponized Monsignor Pruitt's faith as it's likely done many times before. Pruitt was just its most recent disciple (and hopefully last).

The vampire clearly recognized that Monsignor was religious and kept him alive to try and reestablish the fanatical religion around itself, like it instantly went along with it all implying it's happened before but the show had no indication that a god even existed or had anything to do with it as they explained what the vampire was doing to the people. I don't think it was an angel in the religious sense, it doesn't do anything the show doesn't explain as scientific or akin to a virus or parasite. I think the entire premise is basically the snowball effect of fanatic belief and blind faith starting from the Monsignor and spreading just like the vampire virus not letting people see reality or how unbelievably hypocritical and evil they had become.

@@triplemoyagames4195 I'm saying, in the context of the show, the entire premise kind of revolves around the idea that everyone involved is dictating everything based on god but there is no evidence of anything godly or miraculous happening. The whole show is constantly pushing the fact that everything is screwed up because these people are so invested that they are blinding themselves to the facts. I think the show itself ultimately doesn't care what the "angel" is. It cares about individual people coming to terms with death, faith and their place in the world. The creature works equally well as an unknown species or mutant as it does as a clever vampire or fallen angel. It never tells us its perspective, we only have speculation from human characters, which makes the creature all the more mysterious, terrifying and, in some senses, horribly divine. The creature seems very cunning, it can choose its prey, it may be able to communicate mentally, it can certainly understand and use gestures and echo voices. It may have manipulated the priest, it certainly abetted him and was angry when he was harmed. It also shows animalistic behaviours. It shrieks when angry, it does not contain its hungers even when they arouse suspicion, crucially it becomes so absorbed in feeding that it can be shot or stabbed and hardly notices or cares. If the creature does burn up in the sun, it is because instincts blinded it to the harm Erin was inflicting on it. Fire, the bane of beasts, does hurt or frighten it though. This suggests a different species enthralled to instinct as much as to intelligence. But could also mean a vampire so ancient that it has lost human thought patterns or even common sense. This doesn't sound much like a demon or fallen angel, who are often depicted as being at least as wise and intelligent as humans. But perhaps even an angel could be altered by a curse over time. It might also be alien to us because angels and demons simply aren't human. The lack of interest in outside interference when feeding might possibly be explained as sheer arrogance - it doesn't think anyone can really harm it. Again, I think the very fact that multiple conclusions could be drawn about the creature goes to the heart of the show, which presents multiple views on life, death and the afterlife. (Though I think the writers / show-runners probably favour Erin's point of view.)

It could be a fallen angel/demon. It’s smart and disciplined enough to know when to hang back. @7:19 when you rewatch it you realise that the convulsion isn't about the resurrection but it's caused by the poison. When Monsignor Pruitt dies and comes back it's actually because Bev poisons him as a way to force him to admit the secret to at least the mayor and his wife. Before that point he was still able to walk in the sun, which is how they learnt that everyone had to die to fully complete the change. She literally went on a limb thinking he was like Jesus and would resurrect, inadvertently causing the final events.

Fallen angel was my impression throughout, but I was struck by its limitations and how it doesn’t vibe with the War in Heaven. The first problem is that it wasn’t physically impressive and was very susceptible to physical harm, seeming mundane despite it’s longevity. Maybe it was of a species older than humanity with only a few remnants left. Maybe it was a fallen angel that was extremely weak after long imprisonment and he was setting the town up to drain them after trapping them there as easy pickings after the curse. I wish it were better explained. Secondly, fallen angels were sent to Hell in huge numbers, and after the Nephilim debacle and flood, God restricted all interactions in the mortal world. A fallen angel shouldn’t be lingering in some cave, as both God and Satan would have taken note. After consideration it makes more scriptural sense that the “angel” could have been a Nephilim that survived the flood within the cave and had been there since, or maybe Cain and the curse is his mark. I’m left uncertain. It’s really too bad the creators won’t expand on the show. I’m a horror aficionado and this production touched all of the right bases. I just wish I understood it.

That alone suggests it's power. Beyond that, there is a reason it responded to Pruitt's words - One can find them in the Old & New Testament: The Blood is The Life. I just watched Midnight Mass with my Dad (his first viewing, my second) and he's a Pastor, a man of God one might say and he was terrified of the angel in this series. He said "I think it's the devil. The devil after all is often called the prince of darkness" hence why this angel can't go into sunlight. This and the theories presented in this video makes sense because in most vampire stories they are repelled by holy objects or walking into a house of God. So it makes sense this would be the devil or a demon (though I'm going with my Dad's theory) since they were once angels.

Demon makes the most sense to me from what I've seen in this video. In most vampire origins they are the result of 1demons themselves, 2the nephilim (spawn of fallen angels and humans), 3 people under the influence or possessed by demons who commit suicide or die in an unrepentant state ( like Judas in some stories. Or Cain being cursed for killing his brother Able)

The Devil is not called the prince on darkness, that is a man made term. He is THE angel of light, and will forever be. The creature presented in that video was a fallen angel, nothing more nothing less. Man has a bad habit of just automatically calling anything" dark " the devil and anything " light " of God. By that logic, the devil is God, angel of light and all. So no, it is not the devil and hypochristians, especially pastors need a deeper education and understanding of the bible & all the mysteries it contains instead of throwing all things dark and evil at the devil. God did say that HE created the peace and makes the evil, keep that in mind. So who is the bad guy really, in the end? Vampires are not repelled by holy objects, that is also something that is man made, again, men have twisted, added to and taken away from so many myths. The bible states that man shall not add not take away from the word of " god ". Even if you consider it the word of " god " man has had way too much of an influence on it, tweaking it for personal and political gain. Take the KJV for example, few people know that King James was a raging bisexual pedophile who removed so many things from the bible and rewrote numerous passages and words to fit HIS narrative. In the end, the great mysteries of the universe and even the vaunted scholars of the world will never understand the mysteries behind divinity and damnation. The fun part is learning about it little by little along the way. Do not be scared of what you do not know or don't understand, embrace it, explore it. Knowledge is invaluable.

Genetically Modified Skeptic makes a good argument that the angel is an analogy for religious extremism, and that is how I interpret the angel. Further, there are a few points worth making. First, I agree that this version of vampirism is partially biological, and partly supernatural. We see Riley getting genuine prophetic visions of the bloodied church, which are implied to be sent by God; it is Riley's act of selfless sacrifice that tips the scales of fate just enough to stop the angel. Had he not done so, the angel would have won, as not even Erin believed his story of being turned until he burst into flames at sunrise. So there is definitely a pinch of implied divine intervention going on. Throughout the show, Father Paul explains that the angel can communicate telepathically with those who have drank the angel's blood. As he releases Riley, he makes the remark that over time, the angel's "voice" grows stronger over time and its thoughts become his thoughts. I assume that the end product here would be people incapable of resisting the angel's influence. This turns the whole ordeal into a nearly apocalyptic disease outbreak. Had the angel's curse spread to the mainland, it really would have been the end of humanity as we know it. So yes, I think ultimately that the angel was a fallen angel.

This actually makes a lot of sense. Riley abandons his faith after the accident and is haunted every night, but he starts having visions of himself on the boat, something that does happen and where he sees the same girl he killed 4 years prior, except she's normal and happy (them being in heaven possibly? As a reward for Riley, for passing God's test and halting the fallen angel's plan)
@daniell14832 жыл бұрын
@@sthlng2180 I really think that is the case. From the first episode, Riley is haunted not by a ghost, but by his own guilt for having killed someone. He served his time, he paid his fine, but Riley still is haunted. Then in the boat with the sunrise, he sees the girl for the first time not in a dream, but before his very eyes. And she looks at him with warmth, taking his hand in forgiveness. This is clearly not a dream, but seemingly not on Earth, either. So yes, I think Riley died instantly from the sun, and we see him in the boat, being raised up to what is clearly an implication that Riley went to some form of Heaven. The part of the show where it shows Riley's parents being able to contain themselves and not attack others shows their true beliefs/morals, I think it's pretty open and clear what's going on.. They're genuinely good people who are not turned into monsters because they don't have "bad blood" and yes it was hard not to make that pun haha. But I believe that his parents and the child of the sheriff were not attacking others because they were "pure" and knew better, at their core, and that they wouldn't just give in to temptation. I think that is really shown well in the show, the fact that it's not easy to know others true selves, and that nothing makes you a monster, it can only shed light on those bad parts that you have, and bring it out of you. It's not making them violent, it's just loosening their inhibitions and letting them feel as if it's okay because "god" or an "angel" gave them permission. Says a lot about addiction and true, deeply held morals, or the lack there of.

I had to read into the themes of this show for a class and two of the main ideas that stuck out was the dilemma of choosing love or faith, and faith giving permission to act unethically. This actually ties into that so well, that the ones who attack people are doing it because since their faith told them it’s okay, while the Flynn’s and Ali know it wrong whether or not that Faith says it’s okay. Although it could also be about the strength of the temptation, Riley tried to attack Bev when she was close by. Maybe Ali and the Flynn’s just were never close enough to a person for their hunger to get the best of them.

I think the "fallen angel" theory is right, but I also think it's a vampire, in otherwords vampires are from fallen angels. Thank you so very much for the video.

This was one of the greatest "vampire series ever, much less one of the best series on netflix. The show wouldnt have been nearly as good without the actor Hamish as the Priest. He is one of my favorite actors. Hes good in everything ive seen him play in, I especially enjoyed watching his role in legion. Hes pretty diverse, in legion hes more reserved and calculated where in midnight mass he was more frantic and maniacal. Hes been really sucessful in the roles he has gotten but I feel he is really under rated and under used in hollywood and I hope that changes.

I'm sold on it being a Demon, its resulting spawn could be considered vampires tho. Just not the science-y genetics type the antediluvian-curse type.

I think you are spot on, and figured much the same when I saw the show: the creature design being so close to the imagery of fallen angels, the fact that it was found in the Holy Land, how it responded to the word angel and was seemingly into wearing the vestments and appearing to the congregation, etc. It seems more thematically consistent if it is a fallen angel, rather than "just" a vampire. But as you noted, the origin of vampires varies greatly from story to story, so maybe the real answer is: it's both. As for the doctor's porphyria explanation, I figured that was just our limited science grasping at the tiniest fraction of the truth. I mean, who is to say that angels - or what our civilization came to call angels - don't have some sort of recognizable cellular structure, even if the specifics are far beyond our understanding? I know not everybody cares for that sort of blurred line between science and the supernatural, but I really liked that aspect of the story.

I have one weird suggestion for a video topic. This one's pretty out there, the Fangires from Kamen Rider Kiva- and probably by extension the Wolfen race of the same series. The Fangies are vampiric creatures albeit different from the norm. Hopefully the source material of the creatures aren't too different since it's more of a superhero work aside from the usual video topic.

Fallen angel or not, there is the viral aspect and there is the supernatural aspect: that Angel is the progenitor, the source of the infection and it's sole purpose is spreading it. Also, it can communicate, and possibly manipulate, those infected by it - as Pruit said, he could feel every death, every person affected by the "miracle", thus we can assume that the Angel could've had a better mastery and possibly even control, of that sense. This might explain the mimicry of the voice even. And most certainly that is how it "talked" to father Pruit.

Everything about this show is a masterpiece. It has the length of a Novel, yet it speaks to me in ways I never thought about before. The use of mixing Vampire mythology and Religion was so smart. The "Angel" was such a terrifying creature and yet the characters were so terrifyingly human (Especially Father Paul), which makes the show so nuanced and complex.

Maybe I am paranoid but, if I called out into a dark place and someone hiding in the dark repeated back to me in my own voice, I wouldn't go poking around.

Since you mentioned Vampire: the Masquerade, I feel like adding something there: in VTM there is a church of Vampires who see their kind as angels of death, blessed by god to end the suffering of humans who are living in hell-on-earth. This movie feels like it was either the inspiration for or inspired by the Church of Caine, depending on release dates.

It's either a fallen angel (demon), a creature created by a demon or just some high level vampire that has managed to sustain itself for a very long time.

I love that all these religious people worshipped it even tho it looked so monstrous. But since it give a gift of eternal life then they think that there must be something godly but they dont even consider that its awful that in order to keep this immortality you had to kill other people. How selfish it is. Only truly good people see through this... I liked that this angelic type of creature looks so ugly( biblical angels also were not originally beautiful) Definetly one of my favourite show of all time!

I assumed it was a vampire, but the implications of that to me wasn't that this one priest had mistaken a vampire for an angel, but that angel's aren't real, and every Christian angel was in fact a vampire from the beginning to now. Hense the blood drinking rituals and obsession with resurrection.

Biblically accurate how? As described in the Bible or Renaissance interpretation of angels? I never quite understood the proboscis vampire mouth. Where did that start from? Any ideas?

@@jenerin905 the highest level of angels in the Bible look like weird bird bugs with a bunch of eyes and 6 wings the low level angels look like people or try to hide their true appearance and appear human for humans to not be scared when they appear with a sound and brightness of lightning

Angels are depicted in the Bible, and many other writings, as looking many different ways. Ophanim are wheels of light and cherubim three headed six winged beings. Yes. However, none of them can be freaking vanquished by a little bit of sunlight! The idea of fallen angels being the same thing as vampires is a cool idea and I understand it is a theory in the book trilogy “the strain“. However, they are more dangerous, they are not gargoyle bat people who have to rely on some patsy to drag them around in a suitcase. I just think we have to believe that this story takes place in a universe where people don’t know about vampires. Since this thing gives the priest youth and immortality, of a type, he wants to believe it is an angel. You’d think he would think it was a Demon

Agreed, it's definitely a vampire. I think a lot of vampires in vampire lore don't actually die from not drinking blood, but I think it was very weak that's why it needed Pruitt at the start and didn't just fly from the cave.

Dracula 2000 was the first time (I was a teen) I had ever heard the Judas/Vampire connection, and linking vampire lore to the Bible only makes sense because of the vampire weaknesses (crosses, silver, holy water). I agree on the Ring! I had a love/hate relationship with that movie when it came out! That TV scene creeped the hell out of me, but the movies were so good.
