what are your precautions for avalanche safety. I want to get into winter hikes but I see this and just think "no way".

..Well first of all I would say that a good start if you are going to be out in unknown terrain would be to get your AST1 course. It gives some some good fundamentals for winter hiking. An ice axe and crampons would be essential as well. Most of my Hiking is done from April to October.
