To be fair, not all adaptations of source material need to be accurate to be good. In the interest of fairness, I would also point out that Stanley Kubrick's The Shining and A Clockwork Orange are both considered classic films, while both be very different from their source material and hated by the creators of their source materials. Also yes, that comment is intended to be read in Phelan's Tobe Fair voice.
@ursascorner4865

Geoffrey Sorkin But the difference between those two movies with every other movie that changes its source material was that Stanley Kubrick was a great director and those other movies usually don't have anything good in their production.

It shows. Doubtless it's one of those DC/Marvel bullshit where the "writer" read a summary of the show, maybe watched a couple of the most popular episodes, ripped off a couple plot points from those and called it good.

I heard a rumor that the original script was a generic coming of age band movie, but when the proposed version of Jem (which was supposed to be immensely faithful to the source material) was rejected, Jon Chu took a look at this script, and changed the names to fit Jem and The Holograms.

The movie did so badly that it was pulled from theaters after only two weeks, ending its run on November 5th, with a gross of $2,184,640. It opened at #15, with a mere $1,375,320 from 2,413 theaters, for an embarrassing average of $570 per venue, meaning that at an average ticket price of $8.34, about 68 tickets were sold per theater over the weekend, less than 5 people per showing. The week after that, it plummeted 72%, to just $387,925, while expanding to 2,417 theaters, and averaged a microscopic $160 per venue, meaning only about 19 tickets were sold per theater, only 1 or 2 people per showing.

I used to watch the show a little when I was a kid, and I could see just from the trailer it was a "no budget movie" that, not only did it not have anything to do with Jem, but it didn't have anything fun about it either. Jem was an 80's period show, and the 80's had some really goofy but fun/funny shit going on in media and in the real world. That's what made the era, and the tv shows during that era so good in my eyes. This movie didn't have 1 scrap of that funness.
@kwesmichalak9742

Ugh. I was a huge fan of Jem as a little kid. I haven't seen the film but I've seen trailers and reviews. "There's no self-aware super-computer with the ability to produce artificial images and sound indistinguishable from the real thing?" "Nope. Its a lil' robot." "What about the rival band with their comically villainous manager?" "Nope. But there's a teaser of them [maybe] after the credits..?" Fuck. That. Bullshit. The thing that really pisses me off is that I always had kind of wished *somebody* would remember Jem and make a live-action film someday and we got *this*. Now, my 10yr-old niece's generation is stuck with this lackluster waste of time instead of the colorful animated soap-opera I grew up watching. (as a side note: Molly Ringwald is alright but they kind of just made up a role for her. Jerrica originally didn't have any living relatives other than her sister and her foster-sisters and they were all in their twenties when her father died)

Jem and the Holograms could've been a lot better (although that isn't saying much)if they hadn't surgically removed the entire 80's out of it. It's like saying "Hey, let's make a movie about KISS, but remove all of the glam." Does that sound stupid to you too? They should've immersed themselves with pure 80's look and feel and ran with it to the point of absurdity.

I watched the show regularly, especially the first season because, and this proves the show was made by straight males, nearly every episode had one of the bands hanging out in swimsuits. That being said how you go from 20 something year old adults running a business, forming a band, taking care of orphaned girls and traveling around the world while nearly being killed, and yes there were many near death scenes in that show, by their sadistic rivals to whatever this movie is. The Transformers do stay in car mode a lot in the movies. Usually while the humans are spouting exposition. Which is what they should be doing, but you know, special effects budget and stuff. One thing they could do to combat this(and heck, maybe even cut out useless human main characters like Shia and Marky Mark) is introduce something they have in the comics: holo-matter avatars. Basically holograms of people that can they use to talk to each other or scope out populated areas while still remaining in vehicle mode. You know, like robots in disguise. Instead of having to drive into the middle of the desert to transform and talk about what their plan to be Megatron is going to be, they can just pull into a parking lot and have their avatars get out and go sit in a diner or something. Or if they have to infiltrate 'secret army base', they can just park outside, have their avatar dress up in the base uniform and stroll right inside. You could even throw in some joke where say maybe Bumblebee's avatar is a hot blonde and some guy comes up to him/her and hits on her. It would also help with their believably when they're driving by themselves. Instead of blacked out windows, you just have the avatar actor sitting in the driving seat. Or their stunt double for stunt work. I really wish they would reboot Transformers, GI Joe, and Jem at this point. Just so we could get them into a shared universe like the Marvel cinematic universe. I think Hasbro even expressed interest in doing that years ago. I think it was called Project U.N.I.T.E. or something like that. And just like how things like Tony Stark's Iron Man suit sparked new advancements in weapons and technology in the Marvel universe, the Transformers' alien technology could do the same in Hasbro's. The Autobots share technology with GI Joe, which is then stolen by COBRA. Even Jem's Holograms could be reverse engineered from the Transformers holo-avatars. Sorry for the long post, but jeez! These movies are so badly handled. Especially when compared to Marvel movies. Even after all this time they've learned nothing. Trust the source material. Don't try and re-invent the wheel. It worked for a reason.

Didn't the Transformers also have facsimile constructs? Like installed blow-up dolls to look like drivers/pilots and/or passengers to fool people as they went past? I'm going on the 1980s Marvel UK continuity, btw.

The first time I ever heard of Jem and the Holograms was when Nostalgia Chick reviewed it so I'm glad I'm not alone in not knowing much about Jem. Just hearing that the director wanted this to be the "origin" film makes me want to throw things at this movie. I'm so tired of every fucking film being the "origin" to a franchise. It's already bad enough that most films being made now are an adaptation of a book/old film/game/tv show/toy. It can be done well but considering there's way too many of these films, most aren't that good.

Nolan Vogel He also directed and produced the first Paranormal Activity movie, the best in the entire series (I also liked The Marked Ones, despite some stupid decisions, The Ghost Dimension can go to hell). You only seemed to bring up his shitty films as if he _never_ made anything good. In fact, bringing up the good films he made will make the quality of this film even more baffling considering he should’ve known better.

I admit, I am not a huge expert on Musicians and their Agents, but I don't think most solo careers originating from a band or musical group happened as the result of a contract that outright stated they HAD to go solo or else. In my years watching groups turn solo, most of the stories I heard were that it was either the result of egos, derision within the band/group, or a personal choice. If any company was involved it was usually suggested or coaxed into it. Though, maybe I am wrong and there was a case where the same thing that happened to Jem in the movie going solo did happen in real-life?

In a world in which the highly underrated Josie and the Pussycats movie exists, I don't understand why one would bother making this movie, especially since it sounds like there was no effort to make this any kind of campy fun, or even the kind of references to the show that would make this a positive experience for parents who grew up with the original and want to share their nostalgia with their teenage daughters.

WOW this movie BOMBED. Debuted at 15th at the box office with 1.3m on a 5 million dollar budget. I mean when you can't even recoup your 5 million dollar budget on something that is milking 80's nostalgia in this day and age you KNOW you done fucked up.

One day I hope Brad and Brian just bring in a couple of blow up dolls that are fully dressed and just sit with them in the theater. Not doing anything with them but just sit next to them as if they were their dates (maybe buy them their own drink or something). Just so when the usher comes in he would see 2 grown men watching a kids movie sitting next to blow up dolls as if this was all completely normal.

And let's not forget the truly, truly sleazy thing the people who made the movie did.. They asked fans of the Jem cartoons to make a video saying how Jem changed or influenced your life or inspired you, people sent in tons of footage saying how the cartoon helped them like themselves, and be OK with who they are, etc, and the film sleaze included those videos in the movie, edited to seem like the fans were actually talking about the movie! And you can see the cartoon in the background of a lot of the fan vids, even. So fucked up, sleazy and manipulative.

Knowing how badly they misunderstood everything else, I wouldn't be surprised if this movie did put the sister Kimber in that room to hear the message and after hearing all that stuff, she just says, "I knew it. My dad did love me." I'll bet they didn't even realize the horrible implications of that scene and would have had Kimber say something stupid like that after she's casually referenced as an afterthought. I would love to have seen Brad and Brian's reactions if THAT is how it happened.
