I just watched it for the first time recently and was really disappointed to be honest. It felt like a plot that would be a good short but was too stretched out as a full-length movie.

Sounds like Illumination is starting to go through it's Shark Tale period, where their films were promotions for themselves until they pulled themselves together with Kung Fu Panda and How To Train Your Dragon.

Oh shit that Russian gangster thing reminded me of a movie experience I had. Me and my family went to this run down movie theater for the premier of I think one of the later Harry Potter movies and the theater hired a biker gang to..... idk really, like a huge intimidating guy stopped me before I even went in asking for me and my sisters ticket and leering and just over all being agressive, so I grabbed my sister ignored him and went to go talk to an employee to tell them that some scary dude is trying to shake people down outside only to see that there are bikers everywhere, and not like walking around as customer, but stationed like bouncers. It was one of the weirdest, surreal experiences that's ever happened to me. I don't know why we went to see the movie as planned tbh.

I actually was dragged to go to a free screening once for "Hop" a few years ago. I'm not a morning person to begin with, so the combination of having to wake up at 8:30am on a Saturday, being tired and sitting through a crappy movie is why I never go to free screenings. The audience itself wasn't that awful, I don't know if it's just because of "Minnesota nice" or what.

I went to see Fantastic Beasts yesterday with my family and we got not one, but TWO trailers for this (One was a short Cinemark exclusive Christmas themed one and the other was the most recent one). The best part about the second trailer was that after it'd finished, you could hear a little boy clearly say to his parent's "That's not funny"... There IS hope for the future!

Never go to free screenings, man. They're allways the worst audiences. The saddest part is that they think they're entitled to be assholes and do whatever they want because it's free. I went so a screening for Don't Breathe a couple of weeks in advance and the audience was terrible. People in the front where flashing lights at both the audience and the screen, and there was this know it all next to me who always said things like "I know where this is going, "they do this in every movie", "don't turn around!", and " I guess shouldn't had breathed durhurhurhur". Movie was good though.

@LoudToon99
@LoudToon99 7 жыл бұрын
Admitly, as good as Illumination is with their movies, the only real issue I have to agree with everyone about them has to be how they advertise thier films. It's not because the advertising itself sucked, it's fine for what it is, but they need to know that advertising it at every turn is not gonna get people invested more and more. Likely it's gonna annoy them. Case in point being the Minions. I don't hate them like everyone does nowadays, but yeah. Illumination (Or more specifically Universal) over advertised them way too much to the point people got so angry over them. Again, Illumination is not a bad animation company like people say they are. Thier movies are enjoyable, but they need to tone down the advertising.

I work at a theater, we do promo screenings fairly often, and the studios nearly always send some sort of security people to keep an eye on the audience and make sure absolutely nobody feels comfortable in pulling out a camera and surreptitiously recording the screen. They'll stand in the back and look over people's shoulders, they'll stand in the front and watch people's faces, it's fairly standard procedure.

Yeah Illumination's advertising is annoying. But I mostly blame Disney for having such a strong hold on the animation world that films like these HAVE to do it. Like I predict Trolls will be the best objective non-Disney film I see this year, but it's going to be among the lower numbers. (The case for a LOT of Dreamworks films) I also have a problem with over marketing on all companies, each are equally bad. Minions marketing is bad, but so is stuff like Frozen's over marketing. Can we agree that this stuff is awful on every brand?

Jonas King thanks I'll check it out. I just think it's a shame how little recognition companies like Laika and Aardman get simply because they actually use different animation styles from the norm. They realeased some of my favorite animated films from the last few years and it pains me that they get overshadowed by less-than-average films like Brave or Secret Life of Pets

I have to agree that Mike was the most interesting character in the film. Seth did a really good job with him, although I do wish they would have gone with the less obvious final song for him. There's nothing wrong with My Way, but it's kind of expected for those types of characters. Also, I think they forgot to explain what happened when the bear held on to his car at the end. I was kind of confused about that.

Feline Fatale I personally love the experience you get at a theater so I usually just wait a few weeks when the hype and advertisement for a movie has died down and less people are seeing it. By that point not a lot of people are going to the movies as often.

TheTrueLissaWho I remember it was always an event to see movies in the theater. I don't ever remember being told to sit still and be quiet because I was always entranced by it. I feel kids today are just too damn spoiled and it's not special anymore. That and many parents are disrespectful morons these days too. Sad, sad society we live in.
@xSwordLilyx
@xSwordLilyx 7 жыл бұрын
Feline Fatale Yeah, I'm not a parent but if I were I would not be as ridiculously permissive as some parents I run into. By the time my kid was old enough to sit and watch a movie they would know you don't kick people's seats because they would know it was mean to whoever was in the seat and maybe someday they are the person in the seat, and if they did anyway I would admonish them. Also an underenforced rule is that you can but you should try not to (and quietly) talk. Honestly I would aim to have a well behaved kid even if I'm not there to make them be.

She wasn't good either. She sang "Fireworks" from Katy Perry and "Shake It Off" from Taylor Swift. She had no tune, she didn't know how to phrase her melodies, and worst of all, she had no pitch. I even noticed how they used autotune to "perfect" her singing, it's painfully obvious. The others were perfectly fine (since the other actors were actually singers, too), but Witherspoon was plain awful.

I work at a theater in Iowa (not an amc) and we had a bunch of people in suits at the premiere for Birth of a Nation just as you described. There were both men and women all in suits and they looked acted like bodyguards. Never found out who they were or why they were there though, just thought it was funny that they had the same thing there.

I'm surprised to hear you guys like the animation. Just going off the trailer I couldn't get past how bland and kinda ugly the animation was compared to Zootopia which had gorgeous animation. But like Brad said it's not really fair to judge so harshly since other than the setting the movies have nothing to do with each other plot wise.

My favorite part of the Cars 3 trailer is that when it played in front of Moana, there was a kid in the theater who looked like she was about three years old, and she just laughed her fucking ass off watching it.

I've dealt with annoying audiences before, but the worst for me was the family sitting behind me when I saw Epic as the kids kept talking/screaming throughout most of it. But when I saw Secret Life of Pets, it was almost as bad. I went to a theatre that is usually pretty empty at around noon, which is when I saw it, so I figured it would be mostly quiet. Too bad the family sitting across from me had the most obnoxious and annoying kid ever. He kept getting up from his seat to act out scenes from the film. A couple of times, his mom tried to get him to sit down and pay attention, but after a while, she just gave up. However, I didn't get truly annoyed until during the final battle where he got up and started roaring. The worst was when he ran right in front of me and roared in my general direction. Had he been right up to my face, that would have actually been enough for me to finally get up and move back a row or two, but I try to avoid doing that because I don't want other people to know how much they annoy me in a theatre. I just feel fortunate that it rarely ever happens, and this is coming from a guy who often goes to see films on opening day, so that's saying something.

For early screenings they tend to bring in bodyguards. This happened quite a few times last month at Chicago Film Fest (the surprise screening especially. It was for Bleed for This) But they didn't have Russians. They had one black guy and one white guy.

Gotta say that's a nice Russian accent, and I'm actually a little confused by the Russian bodyguard statement. Like did the guys look Russian or did some of them talk in Russian or had a Russian accent? Also, I'll give this movie a plus, it made me wanna go and re-watch Zootopia or Cats Don't Dance.

It would be comedy gold!

Went to one of those "free screenings" but with a ticket system, kind of thing. No bodyguards or anything like that, so, huh, interesting. Can't wait to see this after Rogue One. And yea, Sing's trailers and the like started cropping up when Zotoopia was about to release, so it was easy to pit the two against each other. Even I did, but as more trailers came out, I felt this movie was set apart enough to not be compared as much. Buddy Cop movie versus a Musical, thing.
