uh oh, that almost sounds like the creation of a Shymalan Cinematic Universe. Well, if his future movies will be good, I don't mind.
@FrancisXLord7 жыл бұрын
That's a great idea actually. Everyone should be trying to create their own cinematic universe, what with 'star interest' waning. People are less concerned what films stars are making these days, they are more concerned with following series of films.
@shiro56847 жыл бұрын
geo-diet there was a Shyamalan cinematic universe, "Devil" was the first entry in the cinematic universe
@geodaet837 жыл бұрын
FX-Lord: Well, I think there is just one problem with that idea, the movies of a CU should be able to stand on their own and present self-contained stories. So far I think most of them handle that fine (maybe except for the Pirates of the carribean sequels), but if we get more and more movies which only task is to set up or maintain some sort of CU... well lets see how long it will take for people to get sick of the next Marvel movie or some completely unneeded Star Wars Sidestory... I think its fine as a kind of gimmick for movies but it shouldn't become the main focus
@Painocus7 жыл бұрын
The Pirates of the Caribbean sequels were literately sequels. Movies have been making sequels since forever. Sequels do not need to "stand on their own and present self-contained stories". They are *sequels*.
@geodaet837 жыл бұрын
Youre right, PotC is a bad example. However, then what makes a movie being a Cinematic Universe and not just a series of movies like Halloween or Terminator or whatever. For example what makes Rogue one an entry in the Star Wars CU instead of being the prequel to ep4? couldn't you argue that Terminator Genesys recently also tried to create a kind of CU, though it failed miserably? But Genesys is also kind of a sequel to old entries... I dunno... In any case, I disagree that sequels don't have to stand on their own. I think every good movie, also sequels should be their own thing. I mean, for example, if you watch Aliens and haven't seen Alien, its still a damn good movie, or if you watch Terminator 2 without having seen T1. Thats what I mean by self contained, of course there can be connection to the movies before and after , but the story arc of this movie is contained in itself. They don't exist to just set up the next movie or deliver an afterthought to the previous one.

Mysterious Madame Matt The anti-mental illness and stigmatizing DID marketing is a turn off.
@RiverTheOneandOnly7 жыл бұрын
Hippiegoddess142 anti-mental illness?? I don't think that was their goal. or at least I didn't see it that way. he was a psycho, who, in addition to being a killer, has a mental illness. I wouldn't see this and be afraid of people with mental disabilities, but it's true that some people with mental illness CAN go off handle and do something crazy, especially if they go unnoticed or untreated. ya know??
@StonedGremlinProductions7 жыл бұрын
Going into a movie like this to expect a realistic portrait of multiple personality disorder is like going into Psycho for a keen insight on dissociative identity disorder. No one is going to think that people with multiple personalities are going to grow a beast-like combination of personalities, and the filmmakers don't literally think that either. This isn't Vaxxed.
@HippieGoddess1427 жыл бұрын
Mysterious Madame Matt That's the problem. If we are constantly getting the "Mentally ill people with psychosis are crazy and dangerous," narrative, that is the stigma. Of course there are mentally people ill people who kill and do bad things but it has nothing to do with their illness. It's using mental illness as the crux of a horror film, and it's cliche. Also the movie just did not appear good until they confirmed it was not cinenatically bad.

I was really hoping that the twist was that McAvoy is actually playing 24 people and that the girls all perceive the character to be this single form (due to trauma or even the drugs they got knocked out with in the beginning). The reveal would be when they were rescued and everyone on the rescue team looks like McAvoy (think the Malkovich scene in Being John Malkovich).

I've been looking forward to this review. The trailers got me genuinely interested but I also thought it had the potential of being hilariously bad if handled poorly. Plus it looked like the actors were actually awake, unlike with most Shyamalan movies. And since Brad seems to at least respect Shyamalan even though he admits he hasn't made a good movie in ages, it should be interesting to see what he thinks of this.
@samanthanickson64787 жыл бұрын
the reason why saying kevin's whole name only worked once is bc the dominant personalities said they put him away and said he wouldn't be coming back for a really long time. its bc of Kevin that the girl got the shotgun and almost ended it for all 24 of his personalities, the end only he wanted. his presence, him getting well, endangers their existence.

Unfortunately it's literally impossible to judge the ending on its quality without spoiling it. It really is an ending you either understand but are disappointed by, you understand and love it, or don't get at all and hate it. For me, it ruined the movie. If this film had been allowed to be its own thing, I would say it's fantastic.
@parkerh23337 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry but that's actually impossible.
@trtx847 жыл бұрын
The only thing that bothered me about the film was it did a great job of "show don't tell" but then told anyway. It feels like the doctor had a lot of scenes either reshot or redubbed. Like when she's explaining to Barry/Dennis about the trainyard and the beast and Kevin's name there were ways they could've hinted that better than doing what felt like the big red Zelda text. But what I want to do now is go back and rewatch, because I want to see if I can pick out more times when McAvoy hints that it's one personality being the other. Especially the "kiss" scene. It's so amazing watching him switch between them. And if we're in the Unbreakable universe, that means someone has to be McAvoy's opposite right? Those were the rules Dr. Glass laid out. His philosophy seems to be one that would drive him to combat Bruce Willis' character. If he views scars and imperfections as purity than who would be more impure than a man who is literally unbreakable? I don't need a sequel, but I wouldn't turn one down if it came out.

Now imagine if that villain was McAvoy from Split...

I think the reason she doesn't try the name trick again is because The Beast is an over-personality, it may not respond to what is like a post-hypnotic trigger word. Also, that Kevin personality wasn't able to maintain control in the first place, it's not like showing Jason Vorhees his mother's sweater or anything. It would have made him pause again, maybe, but she had the gun and wasn't really having trouble shooting him with it, it just wasn't very effective. Oh, and if you want to finish up the girl's story, watch Aerosmith's "Janie's Got a Gun" as a sequel to this movie.
