Floch’s speech played a huge part in Levi’s decision. The whole “we need a devil to defeat the Titans and that devil is Erwin, letting him die is going too easy on him” convinced Levi that letting him rest was the best thing for him. Erwin already was on the brink of madness seeing himself standing on a mountain of corpses and seeing the ghosts of all the soldier that died. When Erwin accepted to give up on his dream for humanity in exchange of Levi killing the Beast Titan he had a genuine smile on his face and thanked Levi for his choice, he felt free from his burden. Anyway, Mikasa wasn’t going to kill neither Levi nor Floch, you can see her turn the sword around when Floch jumped in, she was going to knock him out. Every character’s personality and development is on display here, and seeing them clash on each other in a desperate situation is just amazing from a writing standpoint. This is still and forever will be one of the best episodes in all of anime, and I say this even if I prefer S4 overall.

@r_bear6 ай бұрын
And honestly, it's really important! Even in his dying breaths he's still haunted by the fact that his desire to know the truth got his father killed first, then so so many of his comrades over the years. He feels immense guilt over what he's done because he KNOWS he was selfish about it even though that selfishness generally aligned pretty well with humanity's interests. He wanted to go down into that dark basement, and then that would have been it-he even says that he doesn't know what he'll do when he gets there. Armin wants to go *out* to the ocean, to the rest of the world, and he's the one who truly embodies the Scout Regiment's ethos and will keep pushing toward new frontiers.
@izbella35564 ай бұрын
Yeah, that handraise was a wakeup call for Levi. Even in the brink of death, Erwin was stuck in the past. His dream was to reveal the truth about his father's death, whereas Armin's dream was about the future they can have outside the walls.

What make me the saddest is how Bertold turn to his "friends" for help! Even thought he did so many terrible things against them he still saw them as his true comrades. Soldier are still just people after all. Bertold and Reiner were in a position that they need to blend in and that takes time. However being around people that long tends to make you form bonds but you heed to stay true to the mission so you will need to departmentalized your emotions. In the end Bertold departmentalized is psyche so much that he kind of forgot they were his enemy for a second. His screaming like that mirrored Marco's death. (Both stuck on a roof about to be eaten by a titan feeling betrayed by there "friends"). Reiner departmentalized his psyche to the point of split personality. Soldiers need to keep their emotions in check by using such methods and doing so take a heavy burden pushing people to the breaking point. This episode displayed that perfectly. Commander Erwin had to go through this so many times before, it was time for him to rest.

bert's death also just made me so sad bc besides the fact that it's a death that majority cheered for, it was also a death w a story not explored by the author; how lonely and tragic it must have been to see your friend lose it and be the one to bring him back every now and then, to be fully conscious of the atrocities you had to do, and to die without knowing your friends/comrades condition.

This moment is an amazing maturity+empathy test, because the show already informs you that he wasn't just some ruthless murdering machine, but also a victim, so you should be aware enough to overcome the tribalistic instinct, however it's very difficult to do that in that heated moment for like 90% of viewers. I once watched a reactor who was not very expressive throughout the series, but she completely broke down at that moment and it was the last episode she reacted to. Very rare, but happens. Much more common is just cheering and clapping...

A lot of people think Levi chose Armin, cause he thought logically with Armin being better But Levi made that choice using emotions rather than logic where he didn't want Erwin to suffer any longer in this hell of this world that he wanted to let him rest. 6:36 Levi told Eren to keep his emotions out of this but after hearing Floch(On how letting Erwin die would be too easy on him and we need a devil like him) he decided based on emotions Levi chose Erwin's happiness over humanity in a way, but also over his own happiness(Aka Levi would've preferred having Erwin alive)..He truly cared for Erwin :( As we see in the OVA "No Regrets", after the death of Isabel and Farlan..Levi lose his purpose in life but Erwin gave him one
@izbella35564 ай бұрын
That's true but I also think Levi chose Armin because his dream was objectively more promising. Erwin's dream was to find the truth about his father's death (past). On the other hand, Armin's dream was to see the world beyond the walls (future). In that situation, Erwin's dream felt smaller in comparison that of Armin.

I think that, apart from wanting to let Erwin finally rest in peace, the biggest reason Levi chose Armin was that he realized both Erwin and Armin were pursuing a big dream ("they are all the same"), and he remembered what Kenny said to him: that everyone needed a reason to keep fighting. Erwin's reason was learning the truth hidden in Eren's basement, which was about to be accomplished, and when Levi asked Erwin in a previous episode what he would do afterwards Erwin didn't have an answer, because he hadn't thought that far, because he didn't have personal goals after that. Armin on the other hand wanted to discover the vast world outside of the walls, so he would have a reason to keep fighting after learning the truth.

The thing about both Armin and Erwin giving up their dreams is that they are a very good parallel to each other as characters. Armin during his final moments was able to give up on his dream in order to defeat Bertholdt, whilst Erwin had to be told to give up on his dream. Erwin sits upon a mountain of bodies that only grows bigger as he gets close to his dreams, and he is not able to ultimately self sacrifice because he is drunk on his dream. Its just as Kenny said. Whereas Armin is the opposite, he too sits on a mountain of bodies now that will only continue to get bigger, but we see that he is willing to sacrifice his dreams and ambitions in order for the greater good. In their final moments, Erwin seems to be clinging on to his dreams, whilst Armin seems to be able to relinquish them to his best friend, and both were in the final lap to reaching their dreams. Also, think about what comes next after their dreams. Levi asks Erwin, what will you do once you achieve your dream, to which Erwin says he doesnt know. But Armin's dream to reach the sea is only the start for him because Armin says that the sea isnt the only thing out there. The sea as Armins dream is supposed to symbolize his dream of adventure, which is infinite, where as Erwins dream is only finite. These two characters are just incredibly written, and you dont realize their parallels until this moment, I personally think.

And erwin thanking levi meant erwin had made peace with the fact that he couldn't reach the basement, which was his single life goal. How ingeniously the author made this scene. We are literally watching a court where there is a judge, lawyers and a prosecutor. Which one of them is which, you decide for yourself. I feel so sorry for Rahner. That at the moment of disclosure, he showed himself as regretting that he went further against Zeke (if you didn't understand, there the armored one in one of the series lost to titan the monkey at the end). He understood the injustice of this world and went against it. It will only get more interesting from now on. Then he will open up even more. And as always, we will get a lot of answers. I was parsing his remark at the moment of disclosure right by the phrases. There's a lot of meaning in his words. 5:33 This is the first time I've heard such an idea. It would really be ironic if there was more serum in there. It was nice watching your reaction, thank you. You have so many emotions. I'm reviewing it for the thousandth time and crying. This episode was really stressful for me the first time I watched it. My favorite characters of this show are Zeke, Reiner, Annie, Erwin and Bertholdt. Zeke didn't work his way up there until season 4, Annie's locked away and not even part of the current events but all the other three were hanging on by a thread here with the promise of at least one of them dying. Two of them ended up doing so and it was simply a very powerful episode no matter which characters you sympathize with the most. It absolutely deserves being spoken about as one of the stronger episodes of the entire series. I loved your reaction and I can't wait to see what you make of the most insane information dump I've ever seen in this medium - non-stop answers and information, lots of it groundbreaking, for pretty much the full duration of two episodes (20 and 21). Even though most of the Reactors were making fun of Bertolt, you guys were thinking about him as well, which brought tears to my eyes. There are no simple villains or enemies in this work.

Fun fact. The English dub of Erwin Smith stopped watching Attack on Titan after this episode as Erwin never got to see the basement, he won't see the basement. 😢

9:40 Remember levi heard them talking about the sea the night eren and jean fought? I feel like that helped influence his disicine a little bit 😅

Exactly! The respect I had for him went down the drain from S4. No support for fascist pricks in this house!

7:21 ~:26 ← How far into the future was Eren thinking when he said that? This is a very meaningful statement for those who know the characteristics of Titans and have finished watching Attack on Titan. All I want the girls who are watching Season 3 to know at this point is, "How did you come up with such a scenario! Mr. Isayama is a genius!!" That's all.

5:34 saying early that I don't remember that synringe hand slap 9:42 i forgot what I was going to say bc I was daydreaming about the decision and if he had used the syringe on Armin and just _held_ Erwin for the last moments (but transformation, so fly off with his body). Morbid as it sounds, bring his body to the basement so he's still present . I remember earlier in that last part of my comment ; Levi has been subconsciously/coincidentally vetting these two (story-wise) since the moment he got the syringe. Asked Erwin his "what will you do after Maria" and he twice could only say he didn't know, or it depends. But eavesdropping on the trio he got his answer from Armin (everything in the book)
Este episodio tiene 5 años que se estrenó y aún me conmueve mucho

The thing is that we know Armin as the "Good Person" or "having a good heart" .... 《might be an indirect/partial spoiler》 .... but wait until he becomes the "not so good person" and being the Top-2 for conducting extreme level War crimes And, i don't even need to mention the Top-1, becoz you'll find out soon enough

I don't think Erwin would have chosen Armin over himself. The show emphasized it numerous times that Erwin had turned himself into a devil to lead the Scouts to whatever gains that had gotten. He literally sacrificed the entire Scout regiment just to create a chance wherein Levi could take down the Beast Titan. Floch wanted to revive him for the same reason. And, finally, Levi let him rest for the same. Erwin was willing to become a devil. Levi was not willing to make him one though. Though I do wonder how things would have gone if Erwin, and not Armin, had survived. Would Erwin have still managed to play a pivotal role (on a positive side) or would he have just made things worse.

Yh but b4 he did all that to reach the basement only cuz it was his dream but in the end he also sacrificed himself and his dream for the humanity. His final speech proves that
