easy enough to get around the router ban by using your Mac or PC laptop to create a hotspot when connected to the ship's WiFi. When RC execs call out people using routers as criminals, they're obviously channeling themselves.

How about this Matt. when we cruise it's only my wife and I. We are both Pinnacle. My wife will grab a few beers unopened with these words to me. "In case I want a beer on the balcony". Well we leave with 6 beers in the refrig when we go home after the cruise. Of course no bean counter mentions that. Maybe they, RCI, should look at my room persons pockets when its cruise change over day. Can we be honest? These past few months, if you've been loyal to royal, you'd be crazy not to be looking at other vendors. Just compare the prices? Prices on the same itinerary. I don’t understand why you would need a travel router. Most computers and Android phones let you share a WiFi connection via a mobile hotspot. Unfortunately, iPhones will only let you share a cellular connection via hotspot. Speaking of cellular, another option for potentially cheaper internet is to use cellular at sea. There are several companies such as GigSky that will sell you an eSIM that you can use to connect to the ship’s cellular at sea network and if you keep your data use to a minimum, it can be cheaper than the ship’s internet. Finally, the ability to connect to Starlink directly from your phone is rolling out. Although, it probably won’t work well deep inside the ship, I think it has the potential to kill ship internet plans.
@CruiseDude13 күн бұрын
Just pack your mini travel router in your checked bag mixed in with chargers etc and it will very likely get through. A friend who just traveled on RC had no trouble wrapping some "rum runners" folded into clothing saving hundreds of dollars. RC is counting on self-enforcement because they are very unlikely to catch cruisers smartly smuggling booze and/or their mini travel router onboard.

I would have liked to use my travel router. But yeah... it is technically theft of service if they ordinarily charge for what you are trying to use for free, no matter how much you say "but I want to, but I always did it before". So much as I don't like it either, they are within their rights to enforce the ban. We'll just have ot find another way to show them the price of onboard wi-fi is not inline with current expectations.

It's another game of forbidding an item for the sake of profit. The luxury brands don't pull this stunt. I could understand the plug splitter with regards to safety, but this is not a safety issue at all. Also, what about folks who work remotely from ships and need a travel router for work? Are they saying they don't want us to work onboard? How many people actually bring travel routers? There are other electronic items on the forbidden list that get through.

Why!?! Just Asking????

Also, setting up a router and connecting it to your phone or computer could allow others to see your router ID and try to access your systems. If you're spending thousands on a cruise, worrying about a small daily fee to protect your privacy seems silly.

They aren't calling you criminals for having one, those wifi routers open up more chance for hacking as does any hotspot. It will broadcast across several cabins. Understand that the Internet is via satellite and can only handle so much. Their high cost helps keep the bandwidth manageable. If everyone starts using WiFi and hotspots you're going to degrade the service more than it already is. Why not just enjoy the cruise and get off the Internet. We get one account to just do minimal chat with our family and then enjoy the cruise. Also, no they won't take your hotspot cell phone away, instead they will employ single Mac addressing. That will only allow one device per connection. The network can detect how many device per connection.

You asked. I work on all my cruises, so I have to pay the internet fee, and I need the bandwidth. I have been on over 40 cruises and never heard about using a Wi-Fi router. When I heard you on the video it made me feel like you are stealing from me. Because you are taking more than you are paying for, I have lower bandwidth and have to pay more for my Wi-Fi. I know you and others are going to be upset with me but that is just how I feel. sorry.

You get the bandwidth you get, you split the bandwidth through the router, sharing your amount with multiple devices. Not getting more bandwidth.
