The night scene where the young boy is almost drowned, which was left out of the theatrical version, solidifies that the Harga are focusing more on Dani, that Connie was later killed by drowning, and that Christian really is an irredeemable a-hole!

I first watched the theatrical version, then later watched the director's cut. This scene, to me, felt like a kind of test for Dani, like they were waiting to see how she would react this time, and based on the fact that she *did* react "the right way" (she did say "Stop!" and was moving as if trying to stop them from drowning the boy), that helped solidify their decision to take Dani as one of their own.

As a Swede I love this film, its so well researched! The painting of a bear and a blonde girl over Dani's bed isn't just foreshadowing, it's a very well recognised work by Swedish classical artist John Bauer. The girls walking backwards picking flowers is from a superstition. It looks different in different parts of Sweden, but basically if you pick 7 flowers and put them under your pillow on midsummer eve, you will dream of the man you will marry. Putting scissors in the baby's cot is also superstition. It's believed that iron wards off fairy folk who would want to steal away the baby and switch it with a changeling. Ättestupa was mentioned in viking texts. If someone lived long enough to be a burden they had the option to jump off a cliff and still have an honourable death. Likewise, the blood eagle is also from viking times. They'd open up the victim's spine and pull out the lungs while the person was still alive. The music, clothes, art is all very similar to our folk culture, and the dancing around the maypole is traditional. The dance until you die comes from a folksong called Hårgalåten, in which the devil dresses as a fiddler and makes all the young dance until they die. Also giving name to the commune, Hårga. Honestly, the least authentic part is the nature around the commune, it wasn't filmed in Sweden and it shows.

Florence is a force of nature. I know the break up, end of a toxic relationship, is the main theme... but I feel like Ari manipulated us (just like Dani) to think the cult is "good" for her. At the end she seemed the happiest but her sanity was gone, like she accepted the nonsense of it all to live a better (fake) life. Cults members usually go after vulnerable people and make them feel like family. That's how I see the movie anyway lol Great reaction as always ❤

I've said this a million times and I'll say it a million times more, Florence Pugh should've at least gotten an Oscar nomination for "Midsommar" just as much as she should've for the movie she was nominated for in 2019, "Little Woman". She was excellent in "Little Women", that I am not arguing. But, there was something more raw in Pugh's performance in "Midsommar" that should've received recognition by the Academy. But, you know how they roll. They hate horror movies and so performances like this and Toni Collette in "Hereditary" (which I'm still mad about) go unrecognized by them.

The main theme is not break up from a toxic relationship.... not even close... it tries to focus on it, but this whole movie's theme is much deeper than that and it is very prominent that the theme is way more than just a bad toxic relationship.... and also if you notice from the very beginnings of everything, Dani was the only one they all were actually accepting to participate in most of everything... they made her feel welcome.

The most frightening thing about this film is that it demonstrates how effective the cult's techniques are, because it's almost like we're being indoctrinated too. So many people end this film thinking that it's a happy ending (and I felt that way too the first time I watched it), but it's not until you stop and really think about it that you realise how bleak the situation really is. Dani's just swapped out one toxic relationship for another one, albeit one that seems more supportive and emotionally available, and once you realise that, you see that there's no happy ending waiting for Dani in the future

And that's why I believe Ari manipulated us, because most people will buy the community empathy that Dani needs (and will never have with Christian), and forget their weird intentions and behavior. The focus is the bad relationship with Christian and the fact Dani should have any love. When asked if the movie had a happy ending Ari laughed, then stopped and explained it is a break up movie he wrote during his own breakup. I do believe he tricked the audience, like Dani was tricked to believe everything she needed was harga. Her final smile scares me, like she was completely brainwashed... gone. But yeah... leaving a toxic relationship for another one.

At 46:19 - Being burned alive in the bear is a Viking torture. The fats drip out and the hide shrinks, so it's not clear which will kill him first - the burning, the smoke inhalation, or the being crushed by the shrinking bear-suit.

In that crying scene at the end, with all girls together, the ones already in the cult are not wailing with her or comforting her. They are mimicking her and controling the rhythm of her cries. This control over the rhythm can be used to put you in a suggestible state of mind and even control your emotions.

Amazing director, i love directors that know real horror isnt just cheap jumpscares but is actually a primal fear that existed since millenia..being jumpscared by a squirrel flying at your face while screaming isnt being afraid..what dany was experiencing while trying to call her family is real fear, or even the feeling of heart palpitating anxiety while waiting for something to come out at you from the dark is real fear, it doesnt even need a jumpscare, the jumpscare is the finishing touch (if its a good jumpscare that was done after building up a scene).

I watched this movie threetimes in a row to see all the details I missed. You can see in the beginning pictures an the wall in Danis apartment with the bear and the pictures in the sleeping hall show what is going to happen. After Dani becomes May queen the people took her through the nature while she is standing on the wood board you can see faces of her family in the trees! I love this movie because it is always daytime but mindf*ck all the time. Greetings from Germany❤

He hasn’t missed at all in my opinion, he keep making new instant classics left & right from Hereditary to Midsommar to Beau Is Afraid. Ari Aster even got praise for Beau Is Afraid from legendary director Martin Scorsese who is literally one of the greatest storytellers to ever Grace the movie industry. If Martin praises your work then you just know that you’ve done something right.

At 47:51 - I'm not sure that Dani found what she wanted, but the emotional hits kept coming, so she is having a psychotic break. She is nuts, and she is in great danger. Everyone she knew from her grad school situation are dead and gone. Her family is dead and gone. She is at the mercy of these people who have decided, "You are the family, yes?" I don't think that is a happy smile, but a broken smile.

The only thing cold from her original family was the sister. We don't know anything about the original family, but this "new" one isn't, it's a cult. Pelle manipulated Dani into all of this, like cult members do - they target the vulnerable and weak.

One of them being that her family didn’t openly show emotion or communicate. That’s one of the reasons the weeping mirroring scene was so pivotal for her character. A group not only validating her feelings but expressing them with her. I don’t think she ends in up in a good family, but completely understand the smile at the end as she finally lets go of her previous life.

@@jeffwilliams2828 I understand it, but not from a place of sympathy. I only see someone who was manipulated into their "family" because she was an easy target. The joined crying that they do was actually nothing more than another indoctrination tactic - if you noticed, they surrounded her so that they'd be the only thing she'd see, started mimicking her, and then they made it so that she'd be mimicking them. It's very subtle and very sneaky. The closest thing we get to Dani being able to process her emotions with someone else is Pelle, but even he only lets her do so to a certain extent before trying to sneakily manipulate her. It's a very scary tactic.

'Dani' lost her whole family at the beginning, had a rotten, selfish boyfriend... and it ended with her accepted into a new family that treasures her. Her smile said it all. Those traditions, by the way, were actually practiced by some ancient Nordic cultures. Perhaps that's Aster's starting off point; what if those ceremonies survived to present day in secret? "Actually practiced by some ancient Norse cultures." Not really... stuff like the sex magic stuff were practiced, but all evidence we have of it is from the Christian or early modern periods... what sexual magic we know of from the ancient Norse was very different and more ritual, less charms and spells... human sacrifice was a thing... but very rare, not regular and ritualized like in the film, and very different when it happened... most sacrifice was animals, and they were actually eaten by the community after being sacrificed.. the exceptions were burials for people especially beloved by the community, who would be buried with intact sacrificed animals sometimes... burning was generally used for cremation for most people who weren't given the honour of that kind of ritual burial... some of the Midsommer stuff is more modern Swedish traditions, not ancient ones... the blood eagle is a thing in ancient stories, but it's there is disagreement if it ever actually happened, and if it did it was more of a "something some guys did to someone once" rather than a tradition.

There's a lot of good Folk Horror films. Hereditary counts as one, along with Midsommar. Any film to do with cultish rites and a natural setting, really. A Field in England, The Witch, Children of the Corn, The Ritual, and The Company of Wolves are great titles in this genre, too.

At 45:10 - "What is going on with their families back home?" As we've seen from Dani, I'm not sure that they HAVE families back home. Remember Simon and Connie from London? Ingmar was going to marry them. I'm guessing that their families, like Dani, are either non-existent or simply not important. In short... Besides the Harga, the people taking part in this 90-year festival are all unconnected to the outside world. Besides Dani, they are anthropology PhD candidates, who might travel for who knows how long. No one is looking for them. No one seems to care. They are the perfect victims for this cult.

Thanks for reviewing this great film (director's cut, too). I recommend you watch the old version of The Wicker Man with Christopher Lee. I used to date a Swedish guy in Orlando, FL and celebrated Midsommar with him at his friend's house on the water. There was a fairly large Swedish community back in the day. Sad to say, there were no sacrifice, human or animal (kidding) but we did dance around the maypole (no one was crowned a May queen). Great food and lots of drinking! I believe Swedes are amused with Midsommar depicting them as...cult murderers. 😄

Ari Aster's cinema is a cinema of manipulation. I love how he leads us to think that this ending is a good, happy ending for Dani, using all the clichés from various horror subgenres like the slasher (the Joker, the donkey, the student) to make us hate the male characters and commemorate their deaths, making us part of that cult by considering the murder of innocents something common. All this one-sidedness of the male characters is on purpose so that we are in Dani's shoes when they die, and thus celebrate the end she had. This is far from a happy ending. Dani lost her family and was in a toxic relationship, and in the end she ends up finding her "family" but not in a loving and spontaneous way. The fact that everything was orchestrated so that she would be the May Queen only proves how great this film is at commenting on religious indoctrination and manipulation, especially the fact that Aster makes us feel happy that Dani has found her "family". The community is as toxic as Christian, but Aster works too well for us to consider this a happy ending. Dani is completely crazy at the end and I love how Aster cuts it off and doesn't let us know if she actually chose Christian for the sacrifice. The cult was in charge from the beginning. There is no happy ending in Midsommar. Just like the infinite light of the sun, the film manipulates very well and makes us feel like we are in the shoes of a person who is dragged into a cult. A subtle masterpiece. Brilliant reaction, it's one of the best about this film here on KZbin! I love you!

I think you missed the point that she's high. Do you think that everyone in the CULT will enjoy when Dani sobers up and has the realization of what she took part in with killing her boyfriend, although he was shit, stayed by her side and was drugged, raped into sleeping with an underaged girl who was groomed into doing so? She's gonna flip out, and they're gonna kill her. They only let people leave who fully drink kool-aid. She smiled at the end because she had a psychotic break from the horror. @@PuentesRE I don't think they were displaying true empathy. It was always driven by an agenda. Making someone feel heard and acknowledged can both be a mark of respect and a weapon to make someone more malleable to you. This is how cults get people. If someone is dealing with a trauma they feel like they can't share with anyone they might pick the perfect stranger to offload onto before they really get to know the stranger and realize they're not so perfect after all.

This movie doesn’t have a happy ending. Ari aster gets confused about people thinking Dani got a happy ending just because she’s smiling. It’s worth the while to look up some ending explanations or Ari interviews to really get it. It’s also trippy watching ‘everything you missed’ videos because they’ll point out things like Dani’s sister has masked face being made out of the trees and bushes in the distance as she’s being carried in the platform after winning may Queen and you’re like, Ari HAD to know no one would catch that on their own lol

Some people thought this movie had a happy ending. ?? It most definitely did not. Not only is Dani now an accomplice to murder but she has completely lost her mind. She lost everything and everyone and has now joined a murderous cult. She will likely take part in whatever deranged rituals they have in the future and will do what those two people did on the cliff once she reaches that age. It's not a happy ending. It's dark and heartbreaking. Her boyfriend and his friends sucked but they didn't deserve that.

It DOES have a happy ending albeit a darkly twisted one not unlike Eggers’ THE WITCH (2015). Dani, like Pelle in the movie who tragically lost his parents in a fire, now has a family that will support and carry her through her grief which was all but consuming her life.

It's a deceptive ending. We're glad for Dani finding comfort and community, but at the same we know that she's been targeted, drugged, and brainwashed by a cult. The beauty of the film's setting belies the truth of what's happening to the characters. We don't like most of them, but they're still better people than the murderous Harga.

That ending wasn't very happy. I think the whole movie is a way of showing how easy it is to compartmentalize atrocities for the sake of belonging thus indoctrinating anyone who thought she got a good thing out of the cult by end.

I love how the ending is the definition of a deceptive happy ending. I can see how you guys think it is a happy ending for Dani, considering that by the end, she is technically "happy" and feels loved by a group. But overall its definitely NOT a happy ending ha ha. She was emotionally manipulated into being apart of a murderous cult that killed five people.

I’m so conflicted about Christian because he didn’t want to be in the relationship and he would’ve ended it if it wasn’t for her family’s death. Dani kept pushing to be in it even though she knew he wasn’t into her anymore. People always paint him as a POS, which he is in parts, I’m not defending him, but she kept pushing to be in a crappy relationship that she knew wasn’t working. Dani is no victim here. And she made me quietly mutter “F you” during the final shot at the movie theater because people like that are also the problem. Everyone needs to watch this a second time and pay attention at how Dani accepted her situation with Christian. There were a couple times where the door opened for her to finally confront him but she always said, “It’s okay. It’s fine” which was her also accepting her situation with him.

He’s definitely awful and I can see how everyone sees him as the only guilty one in the relationship but she volunteers herself to the misery of her relationship. He said she was too clingy. The clues are right there. They both sucked at making good decisions. She basically guilted him into inviting her. She was definitely dysfunctional too. No one is responsible for the others happiness. That’s codependency. Dani shows it. All the times he was an ahole and she still kept him. Who’s at fault for that part, ha?

Oh nooooo 😅 I fear that the director did a good job at fooling you (and many) into essentially believing joining a cult is like having a community/family. Kinda crazy how he really made the idea gratifying, but it's understandable because the cult was presented really nice and pretty and warm. AH but I really enjoyed yalls reaction!

It's not so much that we "believe" joining a cult is like having a community/family. It's that the specific cult in this film gave her love and care when she was the most mentally vulnerable and fragile. She lost her family, and they gave her a new one. Hell, in her mind her family is there with her. It's a great win for her as a fictitious character in a fictitious story.

It's kinda sad that americans, even when researching a country can't get it right. "Yoddeling".. that's SWITZERLAND. Get it right ffs, Sweden, Switzerland. They don't even sound alike. Chocolate is Switzerland, Yoddeling is Switzerland. IKEA is Sweden, ABBA is Sweden, Spotify is Sweden etc etc etc.
