This is actually a very well researched film. Flowers, may-pole, dancing, music and clothing, are very clearly inspired by our traditions today, but even the other parts have historical accuracy. Ättestupa was indeed a custom during viking times, when someone grew old enough to be a burden they had the option of an honourable death by jumping from a cliff. The blood Eagle was also a way of torture in the viking times, they open you along the spine and pull your lungs out while you're still alive. There's art in Dani's room at the start (a blond little girl with a big bear) which is by a classic Swedish painter, any swede would recognise. The "dance till you die" ceremony comes from a folk song called Hårgalåten (see how they got the name of the whole community from that?) In which the devil disguises himself as a fiddler and makes all the young people dance until they die.
@OAnIncurableHumanist3 жыл бұрын
From what I've read, "it is now generally accepted among researchers that the practice of suicide precipices never existed", and as for blood eagles, "there is continuing debate about whether the rite was a literary invention, a mistranslation of the original texts, or an authentic historic practice." (From Wikipedia, both quotes with multiple citations) But of course, whether or not either of things really happened in history, the film does a great job of playing on the fears of these cultural legends.

I noticed that in this movie that the two outsiders who are shown taking the least amount of drugs were the main ones who were really upset at the first sacrifice. They were also the outsiders who had a close relationship. They were also the ones who really were going to leave even if it meant walking out. They were also the first ones the cult got rid of one way or the other. t don't think that's a coincidence. Meanwhile, Christians group was the group where they were all distant or even sometimes hostile with each other, and they were also the ones we saw taking the most drugs. The point being that I don't think Christian's group had their shiat together, that's mainly why they didn't try to leave. They weren't thinking straight and were not on the same page. Imagine trying to get Mark, who only wanted to get laid, to leave with you on an hours long hike across the Swedish countryside when he could be back at a village full of young women. Josh only went there for the once in a lifetime research opportunity. It might've been possible to agree to leave if they were close friends but those guys were about as close as friends as Christian ands Dani were as boyfriend and girlfriend.

@@matt4at Looking at it that way, it gives new context to the conversation they had when he claimed to have dated her and she denied they dated. I disagree that it’s a silly film. The opening is crucial so you can see : A, the level of trauma she’s experiencing making her ripe for radicalisation by the extremists; and B, the sheer emotional inadequacy of her partner which is then offset by the subsequent offering of community, mass empathy and belonging.
@MetroplexBias2 жыл бұрын
I think they were joking because the film is heavy.
@PurushaDesa2 жыл бұрын
@@MetroplexBias How do you feel about the opening? Critics seem divided on whether the tragedy at the start is necessary, or whether it should just have them already arriving at the commune with their emotional baggage only referred to throughout. I think it works as it is.

My interpretation is SPOILER that everything after Dani's mushroom trip is her fantasy/wish fulfillment. Obviously, the "commune" is not a working farm, and no one lives there. It's more like a picture in the children's book illustrations that you see in Dani's apartment. It all looks like what an American into folklore and anthropology might have a nightmare about in a foreign land. Not to mention everything makes Christian and the other jerky guys look bad, and makes her loved and wanted. Shortly, Dani will wake up, dump Christian, and settle in Sweden, hopefully with a hunky Swedish guy by her side.
