How did The Hunger Games begin? Author Suzanne Collins says: "One night, I was lying in bed, and I was channel surfing between reality TV programs and actual (Iraq) war coverage. On one channel, there’s a group of young people competing for I don’t even know; and on the next, there’s a group of young people fighting in an actual war. I was really tired, and the lines between these stories started to blur in a very unsettling way. That’s the moment when Katniss’s story came to me."

One thing I loved about the Hunger Games when I first read it was that the author didn't have the characters brush off the trauma they went through. Especially in the last book where Katniss is especially messed up in the beginning. It made so much sense especially since these were children going through horrific situations, and I was glad to see an author write that in instead of having them as indestructible tropes.
@Joshua-i2o8s11 ай бұрын
It so interesting that you called the red headed tribute “fox face” and say that she might of even won if not for eating the poisoned berries, as that’s exactly what’s in the book! In the book we never learn her name, but Katniss nicknames her “fox face” too, and even theorises like you did, that she was probably the smartest tribute and could have possibly won. A popular theory is that she ate the berries on purpose to avoid having to kill. She’s actually a pretty unique character, since the book is all from Katniss’ pov, so she doesn’t even speak or have a name, and everything we learn about her characters personality is made up entirely from Katniss’ guess of her.

@@RamblersIncyeh the theory really has no basis outside the movie. In the book it’s very clear that it was an accident. Her strategy was stalking other tributes and stealing their food. She saw Peeta get the berries and assumed they were safe. She was also “emaciated” by the time she died, so she was desperate for any food. People theorise she killed herself cos the movie showed that she had knowledge of plants and berries - however in the book she had no knowledge of this at all. She couldn’t forage for food, she simply stole from other tributes.

Although they mention that Haymitch was a Victor in the Games, I don't think they explicitly mention in the movie that he was from District 12. It's inferred when Peeta asks Katniss if she has ever met him, as Haymitch lives there but is essentially a hermit. Mentors are from the same District as the Tributes, so for 23 years Haymitch has been forced to prepare children from 12 for slaughter. Hence the alcoholism and self-isolation. It's an important part of how the Capital maintains control, as they basically force these Victors into a lifetime of repeated trauma.

The 3-fingered salute isn't a sign of rebellion, at least not yet. It's a traditional salute to the dead for District 12 and probably 11 as well, a gesture of love, respect, and farewell. That's why District 12 used it when Katniss volunteered, they knew she was going to her death to save her sister because nearly every tribute before her had been killed and she was the first one ever to volunteer so they used the salute to the dead to honor her and say goodbye.

Something that the first book tells us that the movie unfortunately never does show well enough is that Katniss and her family were starving, and Peeta saved their lives by throwing Katniss that bread. Mr. Everdeen was a miner and he died in a mine explosion, the same one that took out Gale's father. Katniss was still 11 years old, and her mother shut down mentally and emotionally, she had no idea how to go on and she and her daughters had no money coming in and no food. Once she reached age 12, Katniss could take out tesserae, she could have her name put in the reaping more times, and get a year's worth of food rations for herself, her mother, and her sister (so her name was in the bowl 4 times at her very first reaping, once by law, and once by tesserae for herself, and again for her mom, and again for her sister). But until she reached age 12, she had no way to get that food for them. District 12 is very poor, so there was nothing extra that any neighbors or friends could give them; Gale was supporting his family of three siblings and himself and his mother, though his mother did work as a laundress. Peeta saw Katniss outside the back of the bakery, and he knew her from school, so he knew how bad off she and her family were. Katniss saw him getting hit by his mother, who was screaming at him for burning those loaves of bread, and she told him to toss them to the pigs as feed, but he purposely threw a loaf to Katniss so she had *something* to eat. Katniss tells the reader that loaf of bread was difference between life and death to her family. It got them through the next month until she could sign up to get the govt. rations and between that and the foraging she did in the woods, she was able to keep them fed. (Hunting came later. And just like Annie Oakley became an expert with a rifle at a young age in order to feed her family, Katniss became an expert with a bow. When hitting your target and missing it is the difference between having food on the table or going hungry, you get really good.)
@RamblersInc11 ай бұрын
Thanks for the extra info. Such a great way of telling us just how bad the conditions were for Katniss and her family (and for the average person un that district). I would've thought she'd been hunting since very young from the movie and that they never really went hungry except that one moment.

My biggest gripe with this movie (coming from a huge fan) is how dirty they did my boi peeta 😂 Cato hurt him really bad. To the bone bad on his leg. It was infected badly, blood poisoning, usually ends up killing people that dont have much medical access (most of the districts) Katniss cleans the wound as best she can (and she hates the whole thing). Them getting to the cave is a massive stuggle. And shes just trying to keep him alive. They talk, do their thing, the feast is announced and peeta refuses to let her go. She knows hell die. Hamich sends sleep syrup (highly potent sleep aid) and has to basically force peeta to have it. It knocks him out she gets medicine comes back. Helps with the meds which keeps peeta on a small mend, enough to keep going. Through the mutts their run up to the cornucopia has reopened his leg wound. Katniss uses her last arrow as a way to tourniquet his leg. The kato/peeta fight happen. Peeta is way worse off in the books then the movie shows. His x across the hand still goes down. They did cato dirty too because he falls, the mutts are trying to get at him, but what was in his feast bag? Full body armour. So literally cato is getting eaten alive all night. The sun starts coming up. Katniss and peeta have struggled to stay concious. Peeta asks if she can end it for cato . She has to undo the tourniquet which doesnt help peeta. Shots cato and then the berry scene plays out. When they get picked up its by ladder via their helicarrier thing. A current stops them in place on the ladder and katniss watches his blood pour as the6 are lifted in. A mad rush on peeta ensues. Later on its revealed that he had in fact lost part of his leg and is an amputee. And it causes him issues down the road. But the series just cut that all out 😭😭 Thank you for joining my ted talk lmfao

You two picked up a lot of the nuance that other reactors I've seen missed - like that the mother fell apart after the father was killed (in a mining accident) and Katniss had to take care of the sister. One thing they don't make too clear is that each kid has their name in to be chosen multiple times. One for each year between 12-18 and then they can opt to have their names in more often to get extra food for their families. So Katniss has her name in a bunch of time, whereas her sister only has hers in once, so it's even worse odds that her sister was chosen!

@@RamblersInc in the prequel, there is a side story about somebody from district 2 that I think is very important as to why they are in many ways very submissive to the capitol. Don't want to spoil you but I think you would understand why they didn't wage rebellion against the capitol.
@stefaniefreeman754111 ай бұрын
The districts with special training academies are the ones loyal to the capitol, they are so far brainwashed with the capitol into believing its an honor to be in this "pageant" in the movies its only 1 and 2 but i believe in the books 4 was also a career district

I’m not crazy about the sequels but this one is pretty good. First time I saw it I felt legitimate unease when they were finally bought into the arena. It’s rare for me to feel that.

Fun reaction…now on to the sequels to see how this all plays out. I never did read the books but I’ve enjoyed rewatching the movies over the years. Jennifer Lawrence is great and I think this was the first film I ever saw her in.

Besides the training, one of the reason the out districts don't win as often is because they're all suffering from hunger and starvation most of the time, so even the little training time and good food they get they can't compare in strength to the more well fed tributes. Could also explain why Rue is so small! Not enough nutrients to grow

Makes sense.....although Thresh is also from the same district and he wasn't feeble. Then again age is a big difference.

Really good movies. Technically a quartet or quadrology (not counting the later "Ballad of Songs and Snakes" - which I have not seen yet) They have joined the "grab all the money you can + 10% with a multi-part movie" bandwagon, so book 2 "Catching Fire" is the sequel, then their bandwagon entry for book three "Mockingjay" is in two parts.

Hi, I know I'm a little late to the party, but I have a couple things to mention. 1st off, wrong Liam.😂 @ least u got the 1st half right.😊 Ok, 2nd, the book goes into much more detail about Panem which is the world the Hunger Games take place. Basically, it is America after a bunch of natural disasters, war & famine. For awhile, the world was in chaos. Wanting to get back to some sense of order, the people decided to create a governing body, hence the Capitol & 13 Districts were created. Each District provided some sort of natural resource/commodity, District 12 coal, District 11 agriculture, ie fruits, nuts & some grain & so on. The rebellion happened for 2 main reasons: 1. The Capitol was suppose too distribute supplies to the Districts , & they did not. 2. District 13 was a military District, they believed they could run Panem better than the Capitol. So, noticing the other Districts discontent, they led the rebellion. As we know, the Capitol squashed the rebellion & leveled District 13. That is why currently there are only 12 Districts. The Capitol, not only, created the Hunger Games, but kept the Districts separated from one another, hence the electrified fences. The Capitol felt since they were separated they could not form another rebellion. Because the Capitol didn't want to be using up electricity for the outlying Districts, they only electrify the fences to District 12 & possibly 11 when there is a Reaping. O, the Capitol itself is situated in the Rocky Moutains in Colorado, and the only ways in & out are by the train/airship. Also, those weird looking dog things are creepier in the book. They were werewolf looking creatures w/distorted humanoid faces & w/the eyes of the fallen tributes. They were genetically engineered creatures created by using the DNA from the eyes of those kids that died. In the book, Katniss was afraid she'd see Rue's eyes looking back @ her from 1 of those "MUTTS". Any kind of mutated monster/creature created by the Capitol is considered a "MUTT". In the book, Peeta has a huge crush on Katniss. Gale, "Liam Neeson",😂 wants to be w/Katniss & hints @ it right before the Reaping. Katniss just thought he was being weird. She always thought of him as just her hunting buddy & best friend. Also, He felt like he could think about a possible relationship because this Reaping was his last. He was 18yrs old. Katniss doesn't know how she feels about either 1, although in the cave w/Peeta she felt something. But, she pushed her feelings aside telling herself that they were both pretending for the show in order to survive. When Katniss blows up the sadistic kids supplies, she goes deaf in 1 ear. But, after the games, her hearing was restored. Peeta loses his leg in the book, & Katniss doesn't find out about it until she sees him on stage for the victor interview. 1 last thing, the Japanese movie BATTLE ROYALE takes place on an island. The kids think they are going on a field trip, & while on the bus they are drugged & wake up in a classroom on the island.The selected group of students, possibly only Seniors 17/18yrs old, are from a troublesome school. They are pitted against 1 another until 1 is left alive. The kids killing each other, having a large area ss your arena & there being only 1 victor is very much like the Hunger Games. Anyway, I enjoyed your reactions & hope u continue w/the franchise.😊👍

Batter late than never 😊 Ah ok. We got that wrong. There's only 12 left. Yeh those mutts sounds crazier in the books We have to check out Battle Royale at some point.

This is one of my favorite reactions to this movie yet! Yes, the books came first, are even better than the movies, and if you go to a library or bookstore you'll find them in the "Young Adult" section. As brutal as they are, and well written, that seems absurd to me. The "Liam Neeson" and "they look like a bunch of M&M's sh*t on them" comments I especially liked. The only person in the Capitol not extra-colorful or extra-something is the President, played by Donald Sutherland, and he gives one of many excellent performances. You may have missed the song at the end--check it out, I especially liked the lyrics.
