Really? It’s meant to be about their joy. Yes it’s a live in a fantasy land joy. It’s intentionally juxtaposed with the toxicity of the American friends, who also happen to be all men. Erstwhile it’s shown that certain level of female sexuality is deified with the Hagra.

Although REAL LIFE can be easily incredibly, further-disturbing than this movie- it does a FANTASTIC job trying. Ari Aster is an excellent writer-director. Seriously. Life CAN be just as disturbing though. It can be incredibly beautiful though. I typically go for MUCH lighter, funner and generally happier media, but, this is a fucking FANTASTIC change of pace!

The music somewhat reminds me of the dance procession scene in the 1970s cult-themed horror classic The Wicker Man. Yup, the music and ambience were creepy and eerie alright. Either this piece sound like a funeral procession song or anything played at a witches' sabbath in a coven- only thing it was at broad daylight. No offense meant, but that's how I imagine and visualize it. Sorry.

Actually, I read somewhere that the beginning of this song is supposed to sound like some of the music in The Wicker Man because they wanted to pay homage to the film? Idk.

thats the beauty of it, the juxtaposition between the beautiful and the horrific. the duality of the truth and the pagan's world view. while we realize its malice, they think its holy and benign

Well the entire film is a semi-rip off from the wicker man. Eg the beloved isolated cult.. The attractive promiscuous women. The charming cult leader. The isolation. The romanticising of neo paganism. Fertility harvests, etc. Reincarnation. All of that being said, The wicker man is a better overall film, it was written by one of the Schaffer twins, both of them are genius writers. But midsommar is more entertaining in the modern day. They’re still basically the same film. Except Dani gets a happy ending, and the police sergeant gets a very unhappy ending. Dani gets a happy ending because she has an open mind. Christian. Who shares many of the same qualities as the police sergeant, gets an unhappy end because, on a fundamental level, they’re very judgmental. I love Danis story though. And despite how unethical the cult is, within the confines of the story, Dani, and the cult are clearly the good guys.
