We’ve moved to a home with a gas fireplace. Had wood burning in our old house. The valve looks just like this. I’ve been unsuccessful thus far. Do I leave the pilot lit all the time, even after I turn off the flames? My switch is inside on a small fake log towards the front. There’s no manual. What will happen if the logs aren’t in the correct position?

It might be time for a whole new log set... the old models had a very basic safety valve, and once you see rust (not sure if you do) or detrioration of the metal, it is time. But to answer the question, if you have logs in the incorrect position it causes black sooting. This is flame impingement and it causes incomplete combustion and black light weight powder to form on the lots and chimney and is very messy!!
