I like to watch this video every now and then. Even though I don't care much for Black Powder firearms I can appreciate the ritual of reloading ammunition, preparing the rifle, proper use of tools, etc. that Larry displays. I've never thought of Larry as a master gunsmith or career gunmaker the way that some do... He's more of an "everyman who researches and learns" type. He's exhibiting what the viewer or casual firearms hobbyist can do with a little learning, practice and proper shop/tool behavior.

I'm humbled by Larry's knowledge. I would love to have the opportunity to spend time with him in the shop and absorb some of what he knows. It would be like Disneyland to me. Thankfully, we have a video catalog of his expertise and future generations will have the opportunity to gain the knowledge he's shared (until the government has its way). We have to keep the art of gunsmithing alive by introducing our kids to shooting and hunting and the preservation of firearms.

Coincidently I actually have an Alexander Henry Double Rifle in .450 31/4 Black Powder in its original case and in outstanding condition. I bought it years ago from a man who'd been a fishing guide in Alaska. He'd carried the rifle to calm the nerves of fishermen who saw bears in the distance. What they didn't know however was that the ammunition in the case was for a modern gun and of different caliber. No problem , it calmed the fishermen and the bears didn't know the difference!

120 grains under a .45 caliber 250-plus bullet is going to be pretty stiff. I use a comparable load in my Pennsylvania Rifle, with a Thompson Maxi-Bullet in .45 caliber for hunting. But instead of GOEX I use a like load of 110 grains of Hodgdon 777 powder. This will chrono at between 1850 and 1900 feet per second. The load is accurate enough to cut playing cards in half at 50 yards.

Would it be possible to replace the black powder by smokeless powder? My father owns an old "Drilling" with a 9.3x72 mm rifle barrel. It's ammo was originally thought for blackpowder which was replaced by smokeless powder. It's not more powerful but much less annoying to care.
@snowflakemelter1172
@snowflakemelter1172 4 жыл бұрын
No, do not use smokeless powder in a black powder proofed rifle.
@mannequinfukr
@mannequinfukr 2 жыл бұрын
It's possible but you have to be careful about pressure as smokeless is notably more powerful. Infact 500 BPE (idk if 450 BPE had it) had a smokeless loading called "500 nitro for black" which was made for the old 500 bpe rifles. "Cowboy load" 45-70 is the same way as it was made more for the old pre-smokeless era rifles (the Springfield 1873 is one example)
