This week, we explore the story of Jesus Washing His Disciples Feet
Read John 13:1-20
Also reference: Isaiah 42:1, & Philippians 2:4-8
Jesus is about to celebrate the Passover meal (Last Supper) with his disciples, when he does something unexpected. He goes about teaching them one more lesson by stripping off his outer garment, wrapping a towel around his waist and washing their feet. This act of servitude is met by Peter's distaste, who feels that he doesn't deserve this treatment by Jesus, and then in turn goes to the other extreme. Jesus knows that Judas is about to betray him, but in one more show of love, washes their feet and then speaks to them about the role he has played as servant and that they are expected to follow his example.
Faith Challenge:
When is the last time you "served" someone else. Yes, we often serve our family, but in your daily life, have you sought out opportunities to love your neighbor in an unexpected or loving way? Even as Jesus prepares to die, he exhibits his obedience to His father, but also his LOVE for his disciples. He came to serve not just them, but the world by his act of sacrifice and giving up his life, so that we may live. (Philippians 4) As a family or with friends, make a list of ways that you could intentionally find ways to serve others this next week. Helping an older or disabled member of the community, serving at a food kitchen, taking out the trash, donate blood, send someone a greeting card, or volunteer some place. Consider how you can model this for your children and involve them in a service project. Also think about ways, you can let those you serve know that Jesus is your example for serving.
