Can we take a moment to revel in the glory of those incredible backup vocals on The Royal Scam?
@alanmusicman33852 жыл бұрын
Nick Ashford and Valerie Simpson. Learned their craft of arranging backing vocals at Motown in the 1960s working with everyone from Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell to Marv Johnson, Diana Ross, The Temptations and many others. Had hits in their own right in the 1970s and 1980s and worked as session singers on countless songs - their heavenly sweet sound was very often on Dan records and later on Donald's solo albums and provides the perfect contrast to Donald's acerbic voice style. It's yet another layer of the greatness of Steely Dan that they incorporated that sweet-sour contrast that makes the best music so interesting. Dan understood that and so do most great musicians - the often cloying sweetness of Paul McCartney balanced out by the cutting and cynical John Lennon is another cardinal example.

The "Royal Scam" is ear candy. The trumpet with a type of "mute" device is SO GOOD on this song with the guitar. OMG can it get any better? I used to play trumpet and love its sound affect on particular songs. It gives a very strong Jazz influence and affect. Can you name another "rock" song that uses this effect successfully? I cannot. Great job with your reaction. You have truly seen the glory of Steely Dan's music.

The Fez is actually a euphemism for a condom. I've said before that their lyrics were often at odds with the music, quite often exploring the dark underbelly of society. Still a song about safe sex in 1976 was definitely a rarity. You should check out their second album Countdown To Ecstasy. Probably their most guitar orientated album after this one. Bodhisattva has some anazing guitar work, Showbiz Kids (in which they give themselves a namecheck), My Old School, The Boston Rag. Up to Katy Lied (their 4th album), they were more a fixed band with the occasional guest. Jeff Skunk Baxter left to join the Doobie Brothers and the original band fell apart not long after. Jeff's had a pretty interesting life, part of two of the worlds biggest bands and more recently a missile defence consultant for the US government. Maybe Donald could write a satirical song about it😄

I hate divorce but I love Haitian Divorce. In fact, it is my favorite song of Steely. Due to the last minute after thought of Mister Becker to add the talk box, the song becomes the quintessential SD jam. Love the reggae beat. It's pure genius. But Gaucho remains my favorite album. It's perfection and grace. They worked so hard on that album they couldn't do another one for 20 years. Who comes back after that? Nobody but the two hardest working guys in the music world. Kudos to F & B. They went back, Jack, and did it again. I'll stop now.

After playing on thousands of albums, in 1988 Larry Carlton was the victim of a random gang shooting, and received extensive nerve damage after being shot in the neck. He had to rehab in speech, and had to work to regain the strength in his left arm so he could play again. For a recovered Larry Carlton see the Y.Tube videos of his 2001 tour with Steve Lukather.

The background on the subject of the title track is really pretty interesting. Definitely worth doing a little googling! Another great reaction from you two!

You've got to listen to "Everything Must Go"! Their material from the 70's to the 90's (together and solo) are legendary. I've been a fan since I first heard them in high school in 1972. Their later music showed such impressive maturity (Two Against Nature and Everything Must Go, 2000-2003) along with the solo albums of Donald Fagen, but none of this comes as a surprise. Donald Fagen and Walter Becker constituted musical and lyrical genius, combining rock, blues, jazz, gospel, and funk. RIP Walter Becker.

Is it just me or do these tracks just make you smile whilst getting into the groove.....and to see Nick's face, it's just so great to watch what most of us are feeling too! You are such a cute couple! I honestly could not pick one track above the others, they are all so good! Fez sounds like a movie soundtrack almost.

Title track is my favorite off this album. Ostinato rhythm verse, complex chorus, and intriguing lyrics. When you see them live they were making this more funk, before WB died.

Hey Nick N Lex, I have so enjoyed your voyage into Steely Dan so far and I love how you both dig the vibe in the music and can't help but to move to it. I'm the same way. Bop away. Keep up the good work.

The reactions are outstanding on your channel each time out. Been a SD fan for over forty years. Their professionalism and groove caused many live bands to have Dan music playing as folks are finding their seats. Really love how you are enjoying them!!!

Hi! Thank you for doing these ones! I recommend after you finish all of the Steely Dan regular albums that you check out some of the songs from “The Lost Gaucho” which is a series of demos that were never released for many different reasons. Songs like Kulee Baba and The Second Arrangement are some of my favorites.

Great stuff folks. Please don't miss 'Third World Man' off Gaucho. I want to see the looks on Nick's face listening to Larry Carlton's very special guitar work. I enjoy your video's very much.

Hi Nick, they used to call me 'The Dan Man ' at work in the 70's but i think i can officially call you that now and Lex 'The Dan Woman' lol! So glad you got to The Royal Scam at last and look forward to your reactions to Pretzel Logic.
