All the best for a Miele!

I too was a Miele fan, thought they were well built, reliable, energy efficient with a long life cycle, I changed a lot of my appliances over to miele to reduce my power bill also. Notice the "was" Miele clothes washer W2104, about a 2009 model. After many years of generally trouble free operation, our washer started to smell, slowly over time getting worse and worse, no matter what I tried it always came back, the laundry always smelt a little like mould, however this winter it just got worse. I stripped the unit down to the tub, to remove the tub is a big job so I didn't take it out, cleaned all the parts, reassembled the unit, and looked forward to another 5-10years trouble free operation, as everything appeared in good order - it's a Miele after all. Well after one wash the smell was back just as bad as ever. Determined to discover the fault, I had no alternative but to fully strip it down and this time motor and tubs where also coming out to fully inspect all the hidden areas within the tubs. Well what I found shocked me completely, and unfortunately no matter what you do the smell will always come back, and the harsher the cleaning materials you use, it will only make it worse. The tubs are a two piece arrangement, the inner 'clothes' tub and the outer 'suds' tub. The clothes tub is driven through the suds tub by a shaft, bearing and seal arrangement to a 'bearing cross' which is attached to the clothes tub, it supports the chothes tub completely, pretty important arrangement, something which would need to be well engineered and reliable, SOMETHING NOT MADE OF CAST ALUMINIUM OR SOME OTHER ALLOY !! Well folks guess what, it's made of cast aluminium (or similar rubbish for this duty), and not stainless steel or a chemical resistant composite. Being aluminium, and in regular contact with water, washing liquids and chemicals, its failure is guaranteed, the smell is an indication that a failure is imminent. No matter who or what tells you, the lump of aluminium hidden behind the clothes tub is being eaten away, the smell is the bacteria in the casting venting to the air in the clothes tub, and in this state every time you wash this bacteria and smell is getting into your clothes, and on you. Yes my W2104 is a 2009 model, and I hope this significant flaw has been corrected/eliminated. You can ask Miele to tell you the specification of this clothes tub support for your model. It really needs to be stainless steel as per the actual tub, or a composite/stainless steel arrangement. PS replacement costs $750 AUD, or the equivalent in your currency, plus labour, Miele probably wouldn't do this changeout in your home in a single day, although it is possible if you have the room and assist lifting the tubs in and out. Summary - (a) don't buy second hand units, (b) confirm clothes tub shaft to clothes tub support specification before purchase, (c) Miele have in built a failure mode, which will fail the unit at about ten (10) years. see also - kzbin.info/www/bejne/h3iqmaCBoNN-jtE

What you've done is very similar to my WT2670's "Rinse out fluff" cycle, which I find extremely helpful when I wash my cat's bedding. This cycle is also necessary when using the dryer function on the machine, as lint and fluff can transfer onto the next load you're washing.

I have a Miele washing machine. Its the Platinum Edition. Three years old now.I consider all Miele washing/drier appliances to be the Rolls Royce of machines. Built solid like a tank, honeycomb drum, special enamel coating to stop any rust and so reliable.

I bought a 2nd hand machine from about 20 years old and it is still running perfect. I found out that it was heavier polluted than I thought it was. So I dismantled it, cleaned all the parts and the tubes from the inside, but I left the drum in it's place. Did 3 times the hotwash program with vinegar and soda till there was no more dirty waste water. The hotwater recycle trick is a good one. I am certainly goin to use that in the future. Thanks

the idea of recirculating the hot water WHILE spinning at high speed - hence spraying the hot water all around the tub is simply brilliant! I would run another couple of hot cycles to complete the job though :)

Great video. I'm getting the W3224 as it is on sale here in Ireland until the end of August. I wanted to know how to increase the water level for the rinses, so thanks for showing that. Do you know if the W3224 has the 'progressive tumbles'?

What brilliant video:) really good spin idea, bet that cleaned it good:) I find Citric Acid cleans my Hotpoint best, bleach doesn't make the water as dirty! I never seen it as dirty as that though ever! I think 2 rinses should have been completed however, those bits needed rinsing out! Thanks for uploading.

would be nice if we could actually see and hear this. My Miele in which I dyed some trousers is now coating everything in navy and I cannot get it cleaned out. I will be holding Dylon responsible for my damages claim. Do not use Dylon in your machine

I *think* all Mieles have progressive tumbles since the 90s. If you can get your hands on a a service manual, you can increase the rinse level a lot by activating "Maximum Water Level".

Miele told me to just run the washer at its hottest cycle with a couple of cups of Baking Soda. I do that once a year, and the drum is super clean. The washer is still going strong after 21 years!

@9276jojo If you buy the Miele citric acid, they advise you to fill in the whole content of 250 g. If you clean your washer regularly in a 14 day rhythm, it is enough to use 3 tablespoons(the greater spoon). I think the whole content is more proper for people who have never cleaned their washer

Very interesting especially the hot rinse recycle method to deal with all the tubes and pipes, I had a problem with the breather tube which is situated to the left of the door it became blocked with pet hair over time which produced a fault report, It was fixed during and engineer visit but this look like it may be a good way of avoiding the problem in the future.

Well, since my 95-year old doesn't really care much for appliances (unlike children, plants or animals) I could probably do this monthly. I, on the other hand, have never cleaned my washer like this because I don't need to. Then again, I can't even keep a cactus alive... ;)
