I just did a set tonight without the special tool. I put the caliper back on the car WITHOUT the pads and rotor. After I wedged the caliper in place so it couldn't slide, I turned the piston with edges of my needle nose pliers while applying a decent amount of pressure. It wasn't easy but I managed to get it to go back in by hand only. Every so often it would stop so I backed it up a quarter turn and then continued turning it in (clockwise goes in). Brakes are working fine. Its like the older calipers that would kind of screw themselves back in place but you have to apply pressure too. The parking brake was off and the trans in Park. Good to know if you're in a bind but I still would prefer renting the tool if I wasn't in a hurry if only to make it easier.

i had to change mine as well (2005 Lincoln LS), but couldn't press the caliper in. Come to find out i had the emergency brake on the whole time. Once i released the E-brake, the caliper went in really smooth.

Putting your car in neutral is not a great idea ...unless you have the car jacked up on all four tires

I have a 2002 ls, Really big help didn't know about it needing to be in neutral in order to get the piston in. I use to use an old break pad to get the piston in. That tool you have is new to me, but so is owning a Lincoln. Thanks again for the post.

Putting the car in Neutral has NO effect on the brakes!!! LICENSED Lincol mechanic!!! It will not retract the piston(s) if you have the emergency brake on(that's how the brakes work)
@mifanointed16 жыл бұрын
Jeremy knight Thanks for the info. I'm no mechanic. Just been driving tractor trailer for 22 years. I try to help people with my tiny bit of knowledge. Misinformation will come out at times based on me not doing this for a living..Bought it at 74,000 miles. It now has over 308,000 miles. I have a 2013. Lincoln Mkz. What does drive control malfunction means?

well I couldnt get it to move until I put it in nuetral also.... makes no sense to me but thats what I just dealt with although I do have car on a lift so put car on and into nuetral, possible to have disengaged parking brake but it was not manually engaged by me
@claughnernavy9 жыл бұрын
Great video! Your LS Videos are very informative. You are correct with neutral and Ebrake, if either are engaged caliper won't compress
