Great model from you sir! Have you ever tried kitchen aluminium foil burnished onto the plane, panel by panel? you can use shinny side and dull side for different effects. I would love to see you try it on your next all silver model😀

Try Alclad lacquers for model chroming paints. 95% mirror finish. Dries fast, but best to leave it for a day. I use it for any chroming.
@Noone-of-your-Business5 жыл бұрын
What? An Eduard kit _without_ photo etched parts?? And: when it comes to silver model colors, I had no problems with Alclad air frame aluminium. Worked nicely with airbrush and dried as intended. Took me half a bottle for a 1:48 F-5 Tiger, though... I'd say the problem was not in the AK color, but in the combination with the _primer_ . The Vallejo polyurethan primer I use does not feel dry after 24 hours of drying, but it works fine when covered with acrylic paint. But with a different paint, it might just never dry, like laquer pen on rubber (no kidding: this combination isn't dry after _weeks_ ).

Not alot of those left in the world....seen the remains of one in Afghanistan, I looked at the avionics and controls...there were bakelite wire nuts holding wiring together. It didnt have wings and was sticking out of a mountainside. Kids were playing in it. Funny thing was the guy who owned it said a russian crashed it and told his father he could have it. He had no concept of time but I'm guessing it was way before the 80s and probably was one of the defections the Soviets say never happened.

Sorry guys but I gotta leap to AK's defence here. Tried their stuff a few days ago for the first time (polished aluminium) and it gave me the best nmf I've ever seen. It was touch-dry after about a minute or so. Maybe you got one of the old bottles? I understand that there has been an issue with some batches in the past but that should be fine by now. I ordered mine from the UK through eBay. Of course the build was stunning als always. Great recovery.

You said you don't like the puttying and sanding, but for me it's the building part which is my favourite. Unlike you I don't like the painting part that much, although I'm getting better at it. As for puttying, I do like your masking tape trick, haven't used that yet, but I might have an idea how to make puttying easier on you. Have you ever tried to use a miniature Scraper/Spachtel to level the putty? I combined it with your toothpick method of applying putty, thanks for the tipp btw., and it has yielded some nice results leading to so little putty buildup, that you almost don't need to sand at all.

If you want a "metal" finish don't use paint, try Bare Metal Foil aluminim and chrome. But, avoid any clear coats, it will dull the finish and it will look like paint. Surfer rockabilly?

Q: on the AK Aluminium paint that was bad. Since it did not dry properly could you use a hair dryer to help dry it or add thinner to the paint to fix the paint mixture. Asking because I have 2 bottles of AK Alum. I ordered from Poland.
@manofthehour917 жыл бұрын
I'm unsure what you did with the polished aluminum, I've used it and it dried just as well as their other metal lines. I'd suggest contacting them, perhaps your batch was bad. Also if you ever get their thinner, be incredibly careful with that and do not use it around your model, it's cellulose based and will eat your plastic faster than you can grab a rag to clean it with. It cleans their paints out of your brushes really nicely though.
@rossmunro70844 жыл бұрын
AK hafd problems. You got their first batch. Flory Models and myself also got those. Seemed the worst. The NOW range is well worth getting.

Hi, I am having trouble with a 1/48 scale meteor. I painted it, then coated with 3 layers of Humbrol gloss cote. After that I applied decals with difficulty as the decal solution (Tamiya mark fit) wouldn’t stick to the model and it would drop off. The surface of the gloss cote was also uneven (did I not use Enough thinner?) and then when trying to apply a wash (very thin tamiya XF-1 flat black acrylic using water to thin) the wash wouldn’t flow into panel lines, so I decided to coat it then wipe away extras, but then it all dried and I couldn’t wipe extra so now I have a very dirty looking meteor! I’m currently seeing if I can put Humbrol matte cote on it, who knows how that will go.

The need for ballast to keep the nose wheel on the ground must be a peculiarity of plastic MiG-15 models. I recall a 1/72 scale MiG I built in the mid-70s that required the same thing. I don't remember having to do that with any models I built of other planes.
