This is the nicest looking MiG-17 I have ever seen. I'm really impressed by the amount of time and care they've put into it. I respect people who are passionate about saving pieces of modern history like this plane for the benefit of educating our children. Greetings from Sweden!

Awesome! Three items I found most interesting: The mechanical pins that indicate landing gear position, the speed brake that can be used at any speed up to Mach, and the fake pitot tube ;-) .

Love it! Except the ejection thing regarding tomcats. YES there is an interlock where the seat catapults cannot fire until the canopy is blown off, however there is a reason that the pre ejection procedure for a flat spin in the Tomcat is DIFFERENT from standard ejection. When falling flat it creates a low pressure area above the canopy and without forward motion the canopy isn’t guaranteed to be clear prior to the rear seat catapult firing which would lead to that scenario. There’s a reason the spin recovery procedure in the F-14 has an extra step. 1. STICK: forward/neutral lateral, HARNESS: LOCK 2. THROTTLES: Both Idle 3. RUDDER: opposite turn needle/yaw (If no recovery) 4. STICK: Turn into needle (If recovery indicated) 5: CONTROLS: Neutralize 6. RECOVER at 17 Units AOA, thrust as required. IF Flat spin verified by Flat Attitude, Increasing Yaw Rate, Increasing Eyeball Out G, AND lack of Pitch/Roll rates: 7. CANOPY: JETTISON 8. EJECT: (R.I.O COMMAND EJECTION) There’s a reason CANOPY: JETTISON prior to ejection is a step in a flat spin, because it WILL come off and disengage the seat/Canopy interlock, BUT it MAY NOT be clear of the RIO seat when it leaves the jet in that situation.

Neat walkaround. But... The fences are for drag reduction by decreasing boundary layer down wash; the tangential airflow will create massive amounts of drag at the wing tip, putting fences in its way will reduce that drag. It's not called IFF, it's RWR. IFF is for radar that is looking at you (it's a responder), so that Soviet radar operators knew you were indeed friendly. RWR has an indicator inside the cockpit and tells you that you are being looked at by a radar. And no, the dihedral is there to reduce the excessive stability provided by the 45° wing sweep (sweep has the same effect as anhedral). Also the flares are for communicating with ground control in case of radio failure.
@jasoncarswell74582 жыл бұрын
Actually you're wrong. You're mistaking a wingtip vortex device for a true wing fence - there's zero drag reduction from a wing fence, their sole purpose is to prevent spanwise flow which would otherwise cause the Fresco to "saber dance" at low v/high AOA. Who told you it was for drag reduction?
@19Koty962 жыл бұрын
@@jasoncarswell7458 Original documentation :) The spanwise flow has many effect on the aircraft. You will find that the vortex drag that the wingtip "vortex devices" (winglets) prevent is further increased by span-wise flow. So by reducing span-wise flow on a swept wing design you're fixing a lot of problems at once.

Mike Nolan except what happened in the movie is something that can happen in a Tomcat when falling in a flat spin due to area of low pressure created above the jet (massive lifting body), when ejection is commanded the canopy is jettisoned automatically and after a VERY short delay the RIO seat catapult fires. Every time the Handles are pulled. When flying forward there is slip stream to pull the canopy away and the jet is still moving forward. When falling flat that isn’t present. That’s why the pre-ejection procedure for an F-14 includes after step 6 of the spin recovery checklist: IF Flat Spin Verified by FLAT ATTITUDE, INCREASING Yaw Rate, INCREASING Eyeball Out G, AND LACK OF Pitch AND Roll rates.... 7. CANOPY: JETTISON 8. EJECT (R.I.O COMMAND EJECT) It’s to jettison the canopy FIRST which gives the jet time to fall clear of the canopy prior to pulling the handles. When the canopy is gone the RIO seat will instantly be fired upon pulling either handles, giving the RIO time to clear the canopy. If standard ejection just pull handles is attempted, in a flat spin scenario there IS a possibility of a goose type death.

All Russian aircraft were designed to be able to operate off unimproved runways until the later airliners came along. Russian tyres do not have American or European tread patterns and even large aircraft like the Antonov 12 were routinely operated off grass or dirt runways.

There are multiple AC-130 models which have a 105mm M102 Howitzer. I believe it's the biggest gun mounted on an airplane, ever. And only one P.108A was ever made. Yes, the MiG-17 had a big gun, but there have been much bigger guns on many aircraft.

Sad how a lot of the history of these MiG jets is only referred to for what the Vietnamese and obviously the Russians did (mostly with the MiG-15 than the 17) but they rarely or never mention what the Egyptians did with MiGs against the Israelis and how this MiG-17 wreaked havoc on Israeli armor and even jets during the war of attrition through the Yom Kippur war. Even the vaunted MiG-21's great history is always referred to what Vietnam did against the US when in fact the Egyptians had tremendous success with that aircraft to the point where the actual first air to air kill was an Egyptian MiG-21 against an American cargo aircraft that ignored its warnings after flying over Egyptian territory and eventually was shot down. Yep, the MiG-21's first kill was with the EAF and not Russia or Vietnam. Shows you how much the history channel has its head up its ass!
