Yeah I've been looking at buying either a used MIG or a new Vulkan one from Harbor Freight. I'm 100% new and have no experience welding but I want to learn at least for my own personal use.

I would get the Vulkan, It's hard to beat that level of quality for the price and the one year no questions asked return policy is great if it turns out welding might not be something that your into

Newbie, do you have to have the gas to use a mig welder?

Hi Morfius, im a novis i purchased flux core only welder basicly for odd jobs, im to old to go to any sort of weldeing classes, so my question is can you give any suggestions on tension on the spool of wire and the roller that feeds the wire, as every time you change your spool its not guaranteed you put the same tension back as before i dont have a cheat sheet on my machine at all and can't obtain one, I've watched videos that show if you can stop your wire with your finger your about right but i would have to crank mine way to much it puts a flat spot on the wire, ive seen how to do the inches a minute when you press trigger and count how much wire is fed out in a certain time, but I'd have to do this on every setting from 1to10 and then again when i change spool again, I've done the sizzling bacon sound while altering the feed, i only have an hi and low switch, frustrated lol cheers (my welder is a sealey mightymig 100 I've even got intouch with sealey and they said there's no ball park settings go and take some classes, i bet they don't ask anyone if they've taken classes when first purchasing any welder off them as i think they'd be down on sales

Tension on the wire isnt an exact science so its hard to nail down. Each spool can be slightly different size and also slightly different in softness. What I have found with my miller is i go until the wire shows deformation and then i back it off a bit. again not an exact science by any means. Only having high and low is going to limit you severely. If you use .030 or above wire youll need to run it on high all the time. Anything .024 or below will need to be run on low. I hope this helps a little!

What are your thoughts on harbor freights 90 or 125 for a newbie? Heard they're the same but wanted your thoughts on their welders. Thanks

Not bad for a first time welder. They are both good to get your feet wet.

Phosgene gas is a killer! Unfortunately, some people still do not know about the dangers of using chlorinated brake cleaners, and then welding. Tetrachloroethylene should never be used on something you are about to weld.
