This is an interview I could watch a thousand times - always brings me down to earth and reminds me that logo design isn't some high level deep meaning thing - it's just there to be a functional, memorable visual to represent the brand. The brand creates the story, not the logo.

this! i kinda hope this quote gets thrown around a lot in logo design class.. i really do. A lot of so called graphic designers themselves i think oftenly feel like they know better than most people about visual "deep secrets" to make a business more succesful by creating a logo they think is good, or trying hard to find that "visual secrets". While i think the truth is the other way around. A logo to a company is a clothe to a person.. Its the personality of the person that can make them successful. And when that person dresses well, its a super big bonus that can enhance their success even more cause now there charming and good to look at too!

@@adhidassler I would say, a logo is a person's face it's there to identify identity identity, and we make memorable by simplifying it, while making it distinguishable.

It's refreshing to see a expert being matter of fact, rather than trying to portray himself as someone special born with some special powers. We don't have many such genuine experts left, do we?

love this interview. its nice to see someone down to earth and honest about what they're doing :) the perceptions I found very interesting

3:29 perception is a reality, the reality is not reality, it's only what people think. That's one of the reasons why so difficult to be a designer because you show 10 people and every guy have a different opinion.

Great interview. It demystified a lot of assumptions I had about Rand's work.

yeah, my reaction too. He is either being very, very modest, or perhaps he wanted to appear that way. His work speaks for itself, and it does often appear magical.

Art is more for the artist where as design is for the masses. A true musician writes music that makes themselves feel. The same goes for artist. As for designers, its not necessarily what the designer feels as much as the public feels. Almost everything has to have a purpose in design. Not so much in art. I still think its art though.

+stanley Phillips Thanks Stanley, but I honestly dont remember which of his books I used but I seem to recall that the cover had colored stripes on it. He didn't have to many books out at that time in 1991, but they are all good.

I agree with you. It's very true that design is a solution to a utilitarian problem. Art is not solving a solution. Instead, its an expression that has meaning.
