How much effort should you expect from an umpire? Forgetting the count over and over. Forgetting the outs, over and over. Forgetting to put a ball in play after a foul ball. I wish I recorded him more... There is a standard, best practices, a way all umpires are taught. This isn't it.

I have shown this video to new umpires. You have to at least act like you want to be there. He showed minimal effort for a single pitch. As the VP and head trainer of my association I would be at his next game once I caught wind of this and in between every inning I would be talking/critiquing him. If he can’t get his act together then he won’t get any more games. 24 years of umpiring experience of Junior College and below and I have never seen this. It’s just sad.

Daniel Angelo thank you Daniel. I am amazed at how many people who have NO idea of what a umpire is supposed to do, are offended at me for posting this. It cracks me when someone who has no idea what they are talking about, wants to get angry. Would it have been better if i yelled and screamed at him? Nah, it was amusing, but a poor job of doing a job. Thank you. Cheers

As someone who has played baseball for many many years, have to say this is the first I've seen an umpire risk putting himself in such a vulnerable position to call a game... So why is everyone so upset about it though? Because he's not trying to protect himself behind the catcher? He's been an ump for what 24 years, pretty sure he knows the strike zone but seems like he's still doing his job but just not the way people are used to for umps protecting themselves from foul balls, he's just not doing that so what's wrong?

Sad but true. I umpired softball and baseball for 30 years in Canada. At provincial tournaments, the evaluators were often more concerned about how an umpire looked than the quality of the calls. One of my umpiring buddies had an excellent game behind the plate. The base umpire, however, missed at least five calls at first base and the crowd was all over him. During the "post-mortem" the evaluator said nothing to the base ump but criticized the plate ump because he didn't like the style of plate shoes he was wearing.

Most of the time these videos have no merit and you find the umpire was right. In this case, there is no defense. I have 2 guesses with this guy. Either there was no umpire available for the game, maybe the assigned didn't show, and he was taken off another game. Didn't want to be there in the first place. Or he is someone they slapped a uniform on to volunteer so the game could be played and had no clue. Basically, he doesn't want to be there. Regardless, this is unprofessional. I don't know to be honest. If I did the coaches were letting me off the hook. But it wasn't from lack of effort. Everyone has days like that. But regardless of the circumstance, once you are there, always give best possible effort. Mistakes will be made. I can accept that. But this guy, he isn't even trying.

I'm an ump and I understand cutting a few corners especially when doing tournament ball from 8am to 11pm you get really fatigued. Such as not running half way down the baseline once the ball it hit for example. However, this is doing a disservice to the kids because you can't possibly be accurate with balls in strikes from that stance. And it's even more lazy if this is the only game he has to call.

Back off a bit, yes he could have been in a better position but being an umpire myself it is not going to change the outcome of this game. He is dedicating his time and calling strike/balls. Who fricken cares what position he’s in, if he gets hit with a foul ball then that’s his fault.

Dale Byrd not really, most ups get low to get protection from the catcher, if you have perception of the plate enough to call the proper zone it doesn't matter where you stand. Are it helps but not everyone MUST do it

One time in 8U one of the umpires didn't know he was going to be the homeplate umpire so he didn't have his gear on. He didn't want to go back to his car and put it on so he stood off to the side and called strikes. eventually it got so bad that my coach asked if a random 10U umpire would do it instead, and he actually agreed.
