its actually not that simple. +50hp plus when you paint both rocker cover and brake calipers is only when you paint them red. Other colors will add just 30hp, tho coloring them using plastidip doubles that. Also painting it like the Rising Sun flag gives you 100 extra horses.

11 years ago, when I had my first car, I used to watch MCM to do some upgrades, such as the all so useful push to start ignition, adding some HP by spray painting the calipers and so on. Today, I am still watching MCM videos to restore the rocker cover for my 1990 Hilux!

Nice vid. It is possible to use vaseline on the logo to prevent the paint from adhering then when you're done, just wipe it away. No filing necessary :)

You forgot to mention to put sealant on the gasket otherwise it will have oil leak. Also it's best to bake the rocker cover in the oven for the paint to harden.

Good points. I put mine in the oven on 400 for about 20-30 minutes. I also used gasket sealant on the corners.

When I first took my cover off my '91 Toyota Tercel, it was completely covered in a mess of paint/rust/corrosion. After a major FUCKton of sanding/going over w/ wire brush, i have 95% of it down to bare metal, with the crevices still a bit corroded. Am I fine to paint it like that, or do I have to the whole cover absolutely clean? Cause I've been scrubbing for a while, and I'm starting to get tired. I've been told stories that enamel paint wont stick to corroded surface (BTW Im too broke for a Dremel)

@TheNizzmo If you have a manual, and you mean when you put your foot down the revs jump up and 'hold' for a moment then drop back down as the car speeds up and then continues to climb with the car as it normally would. I'd say you're clutch is due for replacement. My rex did that. If felt like driving an auto with a high stall converter. New clutch and it was good to do though.

thats a blow off valve sound, most turbocharged motors will make that noise when they get off of boost if they have a BOV

+ChronicConnoisseur The blow off valve sound coming from this civic isn't even real, it's a speaker that is hooked into the ECU so it plays an mp3 file when you take your foot off the accelerator.

Aussie Viking The Second Thanks for responding mate. That's a cool combo indeed but isn't it a little too "porno"? I mean the purple might be a bit over the top now that I think of it lol. I just sprayed it with a can of Dupli Color Anodized red and it came out pretty nice but darker than I expected. Clear coat makes it shine nicely. So I might hit the ignition coils cover in gold. It will be coming off again in the next few months for a seal replacement so I might change the colour entirely. J's Racing blue perhaps.

Tristan Nel If it's an "o-ring," no sealant is necessary. Otherwise you want some grease.

Thats an alright way of painting your valve cover if your in the backyard and your a do it yourselfer, however I would just powder coat it a lot easier and dont have to worry about paint peeling cuz their is no paint lol, but keep in mind you get what u pay for so not everyone can powder coat. cheers.

The best way to get the paint off of the letters is to use a stick of lip chap. Spread it over the letters before painting. Once it's dry just pick the paint of the letters, easier than using a file and risking scratching the newly painted surface.

Nope, paint the cover, then while the paint is drying, feel free to drive around. That cover is useless really.

one can is plenty. Use caliper paint for the best results and dry it with a hairdryer to bake it on. Normal paint will work but it doesn't stand up to as high of a heat :)

No. In OHC engines the camshafts operate the valves directly.

Its a valve cover gasket and grommets, yeah I would definitely change them while they're off most over long periods of time they start cracking. Easy as hell to do and cheap.

Why didnt you strip the paint back? Use paint stripper and you'll get a much better finish or you could polish it while the paint has been removed. (thats what alot of the guys with VLs do and it comes up really good)

@lookwhos8teen : well my rocker requires only 8 Nm of torque and my torque wrench only goes down to 28 Nm, which is pretty weak, so you don't HAVE to torque it on. Plus the rocker cover just covers the valvetrain so it isn't under the same pressure as the cylinder head or sump.

It is the gasket. It can stick a bit but just give it a good yank and it will come off. Also replace the gasket :)

It might have been worth mentioning that when you take off the leads, yiu should note which spark plug they were connected to. On some cars the cable length doesn't make it obvious... And putting them back on in the wrong order = nightmare.

I did my rocker cover different to that.. I used paint stripper and sanded it all back to smooth.. Then couple of sprays BLAAACK then a clear coat. :)

what...can you explain clearly, first you said it feeds fresh air in, now it pushes pressure out of the valvetrain...? Does it do both? the hose that connects this to my fresh air intake has been missing for like a year. What should i do? thanks

you can see the old paint especially where it chipped and flaked off thats how. Pro tip: Aircraft aluminum paint stripper, once you got clean alloy, get it POWDERCOATED. Then, it will truly be a job well done.
