How Moog handled the car after the spin needs to be addressed as it's really dangerous, but it's all part of learning. This is a perfect example of why you need to just slam and hold the brakes in once you've spun and are completely out of control. Otherwise your car can move in an unpredictable way for the drivers behind you. Like in this case it could have caused a crash as your car rolls back into the path of the cars behind. If you just slam on the brakes once you're past the point of no return, at least then the cars movement will travel along a straight vector because the wheels are all locked up and not rolling which would allow a change in direction. This is a crucial thing for circuit racing, once you're out of control you just need to make your cars movement as predictable as possible for the other drivers so they can avoid you easily. Flat spots on your tyres are a lot better than two or more smashed up cars.

I think that I would just drop the pan, look for the loose one, throw in a new bearing shell, and hope for the best. No need to pull the whole engine out and tear it down, unless you find something really bad. Push your luck and have the car ready for the track by the end of the week. If the crank is ruined, it's ruined. No harm making it worse. You can get away with a lot of damage for a long time. A lot of cars have a lot of damage which naturally occurred, and they are running just fine every day without anyone even knowing that the damage exists.

I think the lotus might be a regret for Moogs purchase. He's scared and not enjoying it as much as the brz. Someone who's scared to drive around with their car won't be getting its full potential. Guys... Lifting/braking in a corner is unstable in any car. Moog isn't an idiot, he's driven many cars on many tracks. Dude wasn't just unsure of his abilities in a new setup to him... He was downright terrified and lacked any confidence whatsoever in his ability to get that vehicle around a corner. In a car that's supposed to be one of the best handling and most fun drivers cars there is, you're telling me it wouldn't inspire some kind of confidence in it's driver because of its ability? Is a car that feels like a Toyota Camry with four spares/donuts for wheels, while driving on ice, the whole time around a track... But manages good lap times in spite of the terrifying feeling of instability.. Really a good car? I mean honestly. If a cars fast it should feel fast.. There's something not right with his Lotus... That's where my money's at.

what's most probably the problem with the lotus is the tuning on the swaybars. if you loose grip like that in every corner do you either have too stiff swaybars in the rear or too loose swaybars in the front. so just try to do both, loosen up the rear and tighten up the front and you will feel a huge difference, only problem doing it this way is that you may get bad understeer instead, and if you do can you do the same thing in reverse but less than you did initially and you can get it just right. by having softer swaybars do you increase the grip on that axle, and by stiffening up the swaybars do you loose grip on that axle.

@@danielgarcia-dt7fy because lifting off transfers all the weight to the nose of the car and makes the tail light and want to slide in a corner also being a super short distance from back to front does not help. In a scoobie AWD you can get notorious understeer but ive always found going full throttle allows you to power slide nicely as long as you have enough track to do that. @@danielgarcia-dt7fy like mentioned. Weight shift to front giving more grip there, lessening grip to rear. Remember at the track they are at the limit of traction, so if you remove traction by a very small amount at one end, it will slide. Instead, adding power gradually would shift weight to the rear making it stick. If adding power to the rear makes it slide more, then you were going way too fast anyway and nothing will help in that case, so embrace the problem and do a control to get of track if possible instead of being out of control of track. Hard to explain. If you know you're losing control, then control your off. Either by living the brakes up so you slide in one direction or direct your car off. It's important for the other cars to know where you're going.

Moog man, I'm glad you're alright. Just a word of advice because I'm a person on the internet 🤷‍♂️. Get a beater and a big empty lot, take it up to 80 or 100 mph and brake spin it. If you do it enough, after a spin you won't be shaken up enough to harm your performance, you'll be able to just get right back in the game. Plus days of spinning out is really a good time. There's a progression that happens. First you're fighting the spin, trying to force your control over it. Then, you eventually give up on that because you realize it's only making it worse and you accept the spin and that you're there just along for the ride. Then after a while you start seeing things slower and you can make small subtle corrections inside the skid to have the desired outcome. At least that's how it went for me. I recommend everyone does this especially if they have winters with snow. If you can control a car going 80mph in a 180 spin then you can absolutely handle a car going 30mph that looses a little traction.

for mid engine car driving: when you're in a low gear, high RPM (say you were braking into a corner and downshifting aggressively) you have a lot of engine braking, which in this case only acts on the rear wheels, so it's kinda like going into corners with the hand brake on. The key thing you need to learn is "maintenance throttle" meaning you do all your braking before the corner, then in the corner be slightly on the gas. You rotate the car with the gas pedal, less gas the nose tucks in more, more gas it goes out wider.

6:00 in to the video: I would love to see Moog get some passenger laps with other Lotus drivers to help him start to understand what it's supposed to "feel" like when done correctly. The most important mod is the driver mod, and I know MCM had done some clips (like the ones with the V8 driver and Yaris Hilton), but a rear mid-engined layout is different enough that I think getting some help would be smart and encourage people to do the same instead of sending their MR2s into a tree sideways.

You can do a good alignment, using Strings, which can be as good as a Laser Alignment. In Motorsport, including Formula 1, they do their alignment with the string method. What he said. Get the geometry and ride height checked. Something looks way off with that car. It's not you being unfamiliar with it. And string method is just fine. I watched the guys from Lotus Motorsport using the string method on their own Exige race cars in the pits at Silverstone years ago. With the geometry and tyre pressures set up correctly you should be able to spank that thing hard as you like even if you are new to the car with understeer/oversteer being largely determined by throttle. And a BRZ faster? Bwaa ha ha ha. No way.

I feel Martys pain firsthand. I had a v3 JDM STi swapped impreza, drove it like crazy for a year, then finally took it to the track and a couple over-revs (8250rpm fuel cut on those JDM ECUs) did it in. Rebuilt the motor and it did autocross for years afterwards, and then on to a new owner. I love those JDM EJ20s.

Guys, I've been seeing this coming from episodes away... You need to work more the rev match/heel toe. This hard reductions puts all the stress on the flywheel/clutch and the bearings. This kinda hammer the bearings every time an uneven rev reduction forces things on a higher rev. BMW's like e46 puts restrictions valves on clutch line to delay for a part second the pedal release, so it soften up the clutch grabbing on the flywheel. Of course starvation is always an issue, but I fear the main reason was the wear on the bearings every hard rev down that went. Put it with a high G corner just afterwards and high temp of the oil = thinner oil you have a receipt for flying rods. For future episodes, based on all study and all bad things I saw happen over the years personally: At least a 40 or 50 weight oil for track on a hot sunny day. Work on downshifting. Rev matching is key. Put an extra liter of oil above the limit on a trackday to help oil pickup tube staying submerged. See your cars breaking down much less. Cheers! Sad by the STI buddy.
@skylined5534
@skylined5534 3 жыл бұрын
I don't think the extra litre of oil thing is a great idea, he doesn't want to start forcing seals out and semi hydro locking the bottom end or at least introducing fluid braking due to too much oil. The best way to combat oil starvation is a dry sump system... which most of us mere mortals can't afford! So next best thing is a decently baffled sump... and he might as well cross drill the oil galleries on the new crank he'll need to fit!
@midnighteightsix6919
@midnighteightsix6919 3 жыл бұрын
@@skylined5534 Marty could try an accusump/oil accumulator, no substitute for a dry sump but would be better than nothing. A baffled oil pan would also be a good idea, I agree overfilling it is not a real solution to fixing the actual problem.

@@skylined5534 1 extra liter ain't enough to give any sort of hydro or seal rampage. To be fair is a common practice to trackday junkies since old school days. It's just a poor mans way to compensate the lack of a proper baffled pan or dry sump. To be fair I do run an extra liter on my cars since 70% of their use is abuse on the track or on the mountains, and after 5 years, nothing happened so far.

I do not redline it on the exit of high G corners as well, heel'n'toe at max 6k rpm and other small things that "could" help to avoid such issue. Seems easy to talk on the chair of your computer, I know... I'm just trying to share some experience that ain't necessarily written anywhere. I do also lost some engines on this learning curve. Hope for the best guys. Please, do a tear down on the subies engine, so we see the damage. This can be a learning vid for a bunch of people.

Driving a mid engine car is going to be totally different than the brz. Instead of braking right before the corner, brake ahead of time, then go into the corner, with it being mid engine u can get back on the throttle a lot earlier than the brz. You’re spinning out Bc on mid engine, u cannot lift mid corner, or it’ll snap around. Good videos mate 👍

My first tack weekend, just HPDE, I dropped the bottom end out of my e90 335i. That was a sad day. The replacement engine was never right and I ended up selling it shortly after. On the plus side, because I had bought the car at Carmax, and they don't repair BMW's, the repairs were sub'd out to a local Bimmer dealer. So, I was able to get the engine replaced under warranty. So, I only had to pay about $1100 of the $11K repair bill. Basically, Bimmer had no reason to tell Carmax about the track slag in the tires/fenders because then they wouldn't get to make money on the repairs.
