20V 4A-GE engines have become very rare and way too expensive. A supercharged 4A-GZE may be an easier and cheaper find. Plus, it's already built for boost, so you can just chuck the supercharger and put in a turbo.

An LS engine swap in the us is doable cheap if you are happy with 400hp, id like to see them do something actually australian for a change tbh. A barra ford or a commodore done well. Also humble.... The money they spend on shitbox cars is nuts, they probably have more in the mira than swapping an LS into something will cost. They are at the stage where they can and do do big bucks builds with freebie parts handed out like candy.

$3000 AUD is about on par for a Black Yaris in Australia. There's only two cheaper cars in the entire country right now, one that has been in a front end collision and another with no clear coat on the roof or bonnet. Can't quite apply North American pricing to the Australian market. The SS Commodore is sold for an absolutely insane amount in N/A but are cheap as chips in AU.

I own a 5 door Yaris and it is awesome. It is a really easy reliable car to live with. screw putting 2zz like everyone is saying. Do an electric conversion and make it the best commuter car out there. It would smoke your golf no question.

all the time, without actually physically disconnecting (which is not made to happen in general) a drive shafts. 4WD is when you can stop the front drive shaft from turning and put it in high range/low range and each axle is controlled INDEPENDENTLY of each other by the transfer case. so recap, AWD is power to all 4 wheels all the time (some cars you can split the power to the front-40/60 or 30/70, some setups are FWD biased or RWD biased) Get it? if not, go to google.

Yaris (SCP10 and NCP13) owner here: Regarding the check engine light, a very common problem with the Yaris (especially with the SZ engines, but NZ don't seem to be immune either) is contamination on the MAF sensor that causes an in-spec failure (i.e. reporting values that are off but not enough for the ECU consider it an error) and usually a lean code (P0171). A bit of MAF/carburetor cleaner usually fixes it. Some people also report ignition coil failures, but those don't seem to be as common. Also, the real performance version of the second-generation Yaris is the TS with a 1.8-L 2ZR-FE making 98 kW, although I'm not sure whether those were available in Australia. *2ZR swaps have been done to non-TS Yarii (check out **YarisWorld.com**, there are threads about this).* The 1.5-L 1NZ-FE (77 to 81 kW depending on the market and year) was in the first-generation TS (also known as Echo RS in Australia), the second and third generations got it in some markets as options (here in CZ we AFAIK only had the 1.0 1KR-FE and the 1.3 2SZ-FE). Some markets also got the 1.3 2NZ-FE and 1NR-FE and the 1.6 4ZR-FE. One diesel engine was also available, the 1ND-TV (66 kW). Fun fact: In 1997, Toyota introduced the Prius with the 1NZ-FXE (an Atkinson-cycle version of the 1NZ-FE). Some 22 years later, this engine is apparently STILL being produced and used in the Yaris Hybrid (the brochure doesn't say so, but the displacement, bore and stroke all check out).

A 4WD Yaris with mud tyres and the 1.8 2ZR-FAE engine and a 6 speed would be a lethal rally car. I've off roaded a 1.5 and it was underpowered by it was pretty grippy and very balanced.
