TCAS alert during RNP Z approach towards runway 08 Innsbruck (LOWI INN).

This flight started from Rotterdam The Hague Airport. Just after taxiing towards the runway we received a call from ATC to return to the apron because Innsbruck was closed due snow cloud above the airport. One hour later we were able to commence our flight towards Innsbruck. The film starts during towards the airport and we have prepared for a RNP Z approach towards runway 08. For this approach the company needs a special authorization (which we have). Not all companies have this authorization as you might hear during our approach.
The approach is always scenic! During the last part we receive information of a departing rescue helicopter which might appear on TCAS...
Well it did! Even when knowing about the traffic... the traffic alert puts you on high alert!
The landing is made with Flaps 40 and MAX autobrakes. I always brief my passengers prior the landing that the deceleration is stronger than they probably are used to. This is due the runway condition (WET) and runway length, but that this is normal for flying to this airport.
Also a big shoutout to "Ruben Visser" one of my passengers. He provided me with a (for me) unique perspective from the cabin on my own flight. (insta: ruub_vis)

There's so much to think about compared with a standard ILS. When to configure, monitoring the speed due to increased VPA, remembering to select the MAA, ensuring stabilised approach etc... You made it look so easy!

Very nice! 🙂 Christophorus is the main Austrian emergency helicopter organisation (run by the motoring club ÖAMTC, so they are all kept in yellow). Christophorus 1 was the first one, established in Innsbruck in 1983. Nowadays there are 17 bases throughout Austria.

Dit is toch wel een van de mooiste video's op je kanaal! De samenwerking met de tower, de approach, het wisselende landschap en het (niet-)visuele aspect van het weer geven alles een extra touch. Geweldig! 22 minuten lang genoten. Dank weer! (Meer wintervideo's zijn altijd welkom!)

Fairly complex approach with so much high terrain. You both did a great job making the approach and assisting ATC. Scenery is outstanding and another greaser! Keep up the jumpseat shots, they add a lot of detail. Thanks for sharing.

Innsbruck sounds very challenging. Some years ago, speaking to a first officer authorised to fly there in an Airbus (two engined, of some kind), he described his training on many scenarios of which the most challenging was landing on one engine, about to touch down, and the runway is closed. The missed approach involves acceleration at low level, followed by a sharp turn and (most likely in IMC) a climb into an available valley!

I always expect to hear me on the frequency. I have been a TCAS alert at least once. The tower sent us very closed along the northern mountains when an airliner came in. The tower was very relaxed: „It is only a light aircraft. No factor to you“. In German it is „Mücke“ - Mosquito.

Well… some mosquitoes 🦟 might hurt when you hit them! 😜 But when it is a known aircraft and we are sure about its position and he is Aware of our position (so in good coordination) then it is not a problem.

Leuk om te kijken weer Michael! Heb je filmpjes vaak bekeken afgelopen paar jaar tijdens mijn vliegopleiding. Twee weken geleden te horen gekregen dat ik in feb/mrt komend jaar bij Transavia mag beginnen aan de typerating! Al die jaren hard werken en een droom die uitkomt. Tot in de cockpit straks ;) Groeten

This landing was much better than what I experienced with Transavia from Brussels a couple weeks ago! Smooth and perfect landing! I live near Innsbruck and flew to Brussels for a week and came back home. Love your videos, keep up the nice work.

Mooi om mee te maken die samenwerking met ATC om zo de collega's die nog moeten landen van dienst te zijn. Ongeacht de condities, Innsbruck is een uitdagend maar ook geweldige luchthaven om op te vliegen lijkt mij (zelf nog nooit geweest). Mooie beelden en een geweldige landing weer Michaël. 👌 Greetz Henk

This video is wonderful. I've never seen an approach like this. INN is a difficult airport, often covered by clouds and fog. But when visibility allows, the scenery is breathtaking. A few years ago I tried the ILS on track 26 and circling 08 with the simulator. I had a lot of fun! Greetings from VRN

Stunning... have played it 5 times now. Finally a landing i wished to see for a long time(INN/LOWI)... I didnt kwow the elevation vs ground was like this on the final approach. CLASS LANDING CHECKKKK!!!

Goede Avond Michael, Dankejewel vor deze vlog. One of the most spectacular airports. Apologies as have bern quiet for a while as i am now back at work with Ezy in their OCC im operations after 3 years of redundancy in covid 19 times & since 1 year now. So i have not so much time to watch KZbin. Still it is great to be back in again. INN is a tricky one for us so i understand what 18GX was facing. Lovely approach and landing, I love this flight in XP11 and XP12, may I ask what the transition alt was for the local pressure, was it 19k feet? Asking as I know it’s high, but my charts just say “transition alt by atc” so I’ve been using about 14k, slightly above the highest peaks! Cheers.

I hear a QNH message from the Innsbruck tower in the video at 3:20 to 3:38 maybe watch it to get an idea. It think, it was for this plane as they switched to the innsbruck tower frequency and got identified, at the inital reply from the tower. Well, it makes sense to get the local air pressure (QNH) for the altimeter on the plane at this point in the flight. At the first contact with the tower. How high they were might be in their introduction message to the tower after they switched to the Innsbruck tower frequency. Before that time point, they were maybe in contact with Munich radar. At least I heard that switch to Munich radar in their departure video from Innsbruck. So it would make sense to be in contact with Munich radar and then switch to the Innsbruck tower frequency when they want to land in Innsbruck.

Altijd fijn om weer een uitermate professionele video van jou te zien. LOWI is een van mijn favoriete luchthavens om in de sim te vliegen. Natuurlijk evenaart dit bij lange na niet de werkelijkheid maar het is wel mooi om de flow te zien. Mooie omgeving geweldige ATC, muziek, editing en collega’s! Verheug me alweer op de volgende. Mooi heren! Deed deze ELMEM approach al heel vaak in de X-PLANE simulator. Door dat dal opvliegen is heerlijk maar een van de moeilijkere approaches, zeker met slecht weer. Je vliegt bijna blind en dan ineens is de runway daar. Leuk om deze in het echt een keer te zien! Thanks!

​@@mightymkl I'm really excited about becoming a pilot, especially since I'll be the first one in my family. Just a month ago, I got the green light to fly a Tecnam P2002 at the flight school I'm planning to join. Thanks to my experience with flight simulators, flying that plane felt pretty easy. I managed to both land and take off throughout the session. The instructor even said I was as skilled as a student pilot with 10 hours of flying in that plane. Hearing that motivated me even more to pursue my dream of becoming a pilot! Going for the 737-800

Goedemiddag gezagvoerder! Dit is toch óók een veld waar alleen de gezagvoerder, na een extra training, mag landen? Verder vond ik de camera bij de vleugel top, en uiteindelijk een mooi compliment van de co-piloot. Bedankt voor jouw vlog, heb wéér met plezier gekeken. Groet, Marcel. 👍👍👍

The following higher rpn minima BA was cleared to land quite early (when he might(?) have ended up needing a circling approach), is that unusual? Very nice ATC.

As I understood, the BA was arriving for runway 26, but the wind was for runway 08. You can land runway 26 with tailwind, but then it should be in the limits of the aircraft. So as I understood he was limited to a tailwind of 10kts. (We have a 15kts tailwind limit).... So if the wind was too strong from behind... he was also cleared to do the circling approach, to land with headwind on runway 08. That is not unusual for this airport. Thanks for asking. If the cameras could be designed to be impact resistent (difficult I would think), then they could replace the CVR. Video and accompanying audio and chart references made this a must see video.

No need for the cameras to be impact resistant, just give the CVR or FDR units enough storage space to record the feed(s) and hook up some cams. Only reasons this is not a thing yet (AFAIK) are probably privacy concerns plus aviation (rightly) taking many years to develop and certify such ideas.

Heeft Innsbruck net als Madeira extra ‘training’ nodig? Stiekem vlieg ik nog wel eens met MSFS daarop. Blijft geweldig met die bergen. Ondanks dat ik de 30 alweer gepasseerd ben, blijft het machtig mooi spul. En als ik fysiek vlieg kan ik altijd genieten van het opstijgen, heerlijk als je in je stoel gedrukt word.

Klopt.. Je moet in de simulator allerlei scenarios doen waarbij spullen aan boord stuk gaan. En dan moet je dat oplossen zonder de bergen te raken. Maar MSFS is ook geweldig! Heb het een aantal keer gezien, maar hoe goed dat eruit ziet! Heel gaaf... dus niets om je voor te schamen hoor! De motion mis je natuurlijk wel bij MSFS... Bedankt voor je reactie!

Gelukkig heb ik deze vlucht niet altijd... Apfelstrudel wordt meestal wel gehaald! ATC en piloten... op dit veld... echt super! (conversaties onderling en rekening houden met elkaar... )

Hi. Really interesting one this!! Fascinating hearing the British Airways calculation winds for their RW26 approach. Then the different minima for the EasyJet crew. What are the minimums for your Transavia out of interest compared to EasyJet. Also great stuff for we flight simmers to see!!! Keep the good work up!! Keith

So EasyJet has a minimum of about 7100ft (Cold temperature correction should be applied to this alt). We have (for the same routing)... a minimum of about 2900ft. (Same with cold temp corrections). Field elevation is 1907ft. But EasyJet has to fly the last part with visual conditions to stay clear of the mountains and see the runway.... This would not have been possible since we entered a snow cloud at around 5000ft... Thanks for your comment and question Keith!
