Sup Miguel! Nice shooting today! I just wanted to give a little bit of feedback on the video since you said you were going to focus on filming today. I do think you had a lot of really good shots, but a lot of the transitions feel really abrupt and choppy when cutting between your more standard shots to the higher shots of specific holds, or upclose shots. I think part of this is because some of the transitions are to very short cuts which make them feel awkward and rushed. Just to focus in and give a few specifics, I'll look primarily at this first run through of the first climb from 0:43-1:21 A lot of the advice I want to give focuses around making cuts around the song you're working with, to make the cuts feel more natural. Starting with your introcuts, you have some sweet shots here from around the gym and an awesome soundtrack in the background with a really steady and good tempo beat. It seems like you might have been trying to make cuts to the beat? But You're off by a little bit. If you want this part to be fast ish ( shorter cuts shorter intro) that's totally fine and you can do cuts on the 1/2 time, but really I think it would feel a lot better if you just made a cut every time the beat comes in, on the first hit of the double kick. Then starting at 0:47-0:57 you have 6 cuts to different angles. That's a LOT of cuts to make in only 10 seconds. It can give a bit of a feeling of vertigo as we're jumping back and forth so quickly. A lot of these are super cool angles and great shots! But, I think you either need to make the cuts in time with the music, to make it feel more intentional, or reduce the number of cuts to maybe 3 or 4. Or both. Making the cuts in time with the music will make them feel less abrupt because once you know they're in time, you can expect when the next cut might happen, which makes it feel like more of a natural flow. Next we come to the down shot as the climber moves to the big hold. This is a really cool shot and idea, and because we're coming off a longer steady shot of the last few moves it doesn't feel quite as unnatural, but the cuts are just baarreeelly off time with the beat. and although I don't think you need to be in time here, I just think it would make the cuts feel so much smoother. The shot of the foot move at 1:11 is a great close up, and you slowly give move the shot upward giving the feeling of moving up the wall with the climber which is a cool flow. I do think the cut is a bit short. You easily could have taken the time here to do a full pan of the climbers body starting at the foot and moving up all the way to the holds above the head. This would have made the cut feel less choppy, as we move between two cuts of similar lengths, first on one side from farther out, then to the other side with a more closeup pan approach. It would also help give more height to the wall was we look up from below, making it feel like the climber is really reaching / getting above us from a lower angle and giving more depth to the shot. The last part of this run from about 1:18 to 1:21 we start with you losing focus a bit on the climber as the camera grabs the attention of some of the holds in the foreground. If this was intentional it's a pretty cool transition, as we then move to a single hold which is also out of focus, and we bring back into focus as we move to the next speaking segment. Again, if this is intentional, I actually would have liked to see the climber at 1:18 go a little bit farther out of focus, you're in this kind of strange middle ground where he's still in focus enough that it could be taken as intentional? But it could also just be taken as sloppy camera work depending on how much good faith the viewer is giving you. If you were really able to bring him out of focus, then move to the very out of focus hold it would feel way cleaner I think. Sorry for the essay, I am by no means a professional so take my advice with a grain of salt but I do watch a TON of video and do some editing and shooting myself. I love your work and think you guys do great stuff, this is all supposed to be constructive so I hope you don't mind a bit of a deep dive into this one specific portion. Keep doing what you do!

Holy smokes! Of course I don't mind the feedback. This is what KZbin is all about! In my real job as an architect, constructive criticism is what takes a design from good to great. Thanks again for taking the time to write up your thoughts. Seriously, I love how you broke down every scene of that climb haha. I was trying something different here for sure. When I'm at the editing desk on Sunday nights, I usually try to edit as fast as possible and don't really have time to 'perfect' the edit. But yeah, I agree with all of your points here. The climber getting out of focus at the end was a complete accident haha. In fact, I wasn't even going to include that climb for that reason alone, but decided to anyway. And I'm glad I did, because I got this awesome response from you that helps me improve my craft! Yeah, when I'm in autofocus and shooting wide open (f 1.8) and with a wide autofocus point, the Sony A7IV will focus on things that are in the foreground sometimes. I was going to shoot in manual focus, but I was climbing a ladder at the same time, and it's hard to juggle all those things haha! But yeah, comments like these keep me going dude. Thanks again for typing it all out. That was a lot of work!

When you climb on a certain day, how many hours do you spend climbing? For me personally, I am tapped out after 45 minutes since I don't rest as much between tries.

Hey! I climb during my lunch hour, so 45 minutes as well. But I also do one or two 3hr sessions during the week as well 🙌

Cameras lights by next year you're going to have a boom mic guy and a scissor lift in the gym for different angles at this point lol.
