Funding is NOT the issue, the issue is to stop the the ill policies. Problem is simple to solve 1. Anyone crossed illegally will be denied for life and if found deported immediately 2. Congress needs to change US asylum law so that applications for asylum must be made from a US embassy or consulate in a foreign country. Then detain every asylum seeker and send them where they came from to apply for asylum. Im brazilian and last weekend both of the airports of my city São Paulo we’re full of people from Vietnam and India asking for asylum. They wanted to be looked after and then continue their journey to the USA. The situation is so bad this year that the government had to cancel the possibility of giving refugee status to Afghanistan. But this week especially it is very bad. We have now 200.000 refugee applicants and the vast majority is trying to use us as pitstop to get there. You are clearly sending a message of PLEASE COME HERE. It is people from all over the world that is trying to get there and it has never been this bad.

And many if not most are coming from South America, they arrive with a tourist visa or as refugees to Colombia, Ecuador or my country Brazil and then head there. I work at the airport and it is very disrupting for us. It is also fueling organized crime and human trafficking because they pay criminals to get there.

Brazil is free to deny asylum applications to anyone who does not have a reason and proof in conformance of the UN Convention on the Status of Refugees (1951) and the follow-on Protocol (1967). The reasons are limited. Looking for a better life or a job or running from crime are not valid reasons to ask for or grant asylum under that treaty. The US has been far too lax in sticking to the intent of the treaty.
