I think the reason this movie actually worked for me is partly because of the director. This is the same guy who gave us Ernest and Celestine along with The Big Bad Fox. He takes very simple and cute stories but makes them work with charming characters and great presentation. And while this isn't quite on the level of those two films, he did the best he could with this simple concept. If anything, the main setup is just kind of an excuse for the family to go on a self discovery journey. And while the characters aren't super interesting or deep, I enjoyed their family dynamic enough that it never once bothered me.

4:10 Keegan Michael-Key always has tons of energy. Even in The Lion King remake a movie that otherwise lacked a lot of energy.

This felt like it got drowned out in the Christmas releases, it really feels like it would've done better aiming for New Years or even January. Which is a shame, as it's a decent new movie that's *not* a remake, sequel, or based off a comic book.
