New York Author and teacher A. V. Zeppa announced the release of Miguel's Secret Journal, published by Outskirts Press. A coming out story for both the gay and straight communities, Zeppa's novel presents a controversial world of magical realism in which the archangels Michael and Gabriel are portrayed as gay emo teenagers in this hauntingly beautiful love story.
They will look at you
Two boys hand in hand
And they will fear you
They will not understand
And they will hate your perfect love
So opens Miguel's Secret Journal as the fifteen year old gay Latino teenager, Miguel, begins to escape the physical, emotional and sexual abuse of his upbringing in a poor, violent neighborhood in the South Bronx. Now a gifted emo artist, Miguel meets another gay student, Gabriel, and the two fall in love.
As the two young lovers bond, Gabriel tells Miguel a secret that will forever change his life: both of them are archangels who have been sent back to earth because hatred and violence have once again tipped the balance of good and evil on earth. Miguel is told he is Michael, the archangel who originally saved heaven and earth from the ravages of Lucifer.
"I looked at him in stunned silence," Miguel writes in his journal after Gabriel reveals his metaphysical secret, "...not knowing what to believe because I didn't feel too much like an angel. I still felt just like me."
A coming out as well as a coming of age story, Zeppa's work will reverberate for both gay and straight readers with its sensitive treatment of the search for a perfect love in an imperfect world.
