i wouldnt say 90s were the most emotional infact thats honestly somewhat offensive to say that. as emotion is literally what a song is so calling one time period more emotional is sort of just untrue.

The most iconic musical sound of the 80s was really the glamrock, and that's the music style I first got into when I first discovered rock. Was a bit surprised by the overrepresentation of metal and hard rock for the 80s and virtually nothing from the most iconic style of the 80s. Glamrock was pure 80s it didn't exist in the 70s and it didn't exist in the 90s. Much like grunge was pure 90s. Genres like hard rock and metal made their start in the 70s and are still going strong to this day. While there were many iconic songs of those genres in the 80s, those genres themselves are not really iconic to any decade, it's pretty much ubiquitous since the 70s.

@@ShannaNL You're entitled to your opinion, but I will choose to disagree. I grew up in the 80s and it was THE DEFINING music of the 80s, and that's from my own personal experience. But like I said, you don't have to feel the same way as me, we all have our own music taste, which is why there's so many different styles. Along those lines, I'm not aware of any new major music styles since about 2005 or so, maybe I missed one along the way, but seems to me, for the last couple of decades, the art of music has stagnated. Not for lack of musicians trying, but the mainstream does not promote experimental styles, just the "profit formula" styles.

I'm mainly into late 70s style punk rock and early 80s hardcore punk but I like all types of music from every genre. If I hear a song and like it, _that's_ what matters. That said I'm _not_ a musician, and don't hear a lot of difference between music from the 80s & music from today, 2023. Some of my favorite modern bands are Restraining Order, Scowl & Anklebiter. Some of my favorite older bands are Minor Threat, Adrenalin O.D. & Black Flag (Black Flag is still touring but not making new music). I barely hear a significant enough difference in their music to be able to pigeonhole these bands into a certain decade. Maybe that's part of the genre of hardcore punk? Maybe it's because I'm not a musician & don't have the ear? Also, the early 80s sound is highly favored & many bands are playing it, such as Restraining Order. In fact, that's the goal of their band, to play 1980s punk rock. So, I'm not sure I even have a point! Time, decade, when it was made doesn't matter to me. All that's important is "do I like the song?" It's also good to be able to see the band play on stage, so the live performance is important, but not as vital as "is the song great?"

I think the 70s had the most iconic riffs (and probably the 60s, too) -- Sabbath, Zeppelin, Purple, early AC/DC, Rainbow, Rush, even Pink Floyd.... riff-based rock kind of died out later on and wasn't as popular in the later decades (although a lot of metal bands till kept it up, especiallly traditional, Doom & Power metal bands).

There were some good songs in the 90's but grunge and industrial music kinda ruined the fun for rock music. That's my opinion though. Heavy metal evolved crazy fast in the 1970s. Heavy metal debuted no earlier than 1968 (But I would place the birthyear of heavy metal at 1970), and something like Eruption by Van Halen was out by 1978.
