It's nick name isn't "Bull Frog", it's nick name is simply "Phrog". Officially, it's nomenclature is CH-46 Sea Knight but was nicked named "Phrog" because when it's parked, you look at it from the front at an angle and it looks like a frog sitting down with a smile on it's face.

@@pladeler I think, after examining the picture on the box that you were handling, the confusion is understandable. The squadron markings on the aircraft being depicted are of HMM-261 known as the "Raging Bulls". The "Raging Bulls" were housed next to my unit HMM-264 "Black Knights".

You are wrong. It is called the "Bull Phrog." Sometime during the 90's the original stubwings which carried only two hours of fuel were removed and replaced with larger stub wings that I believe increased the fuel capacity to over three hours of flight time. That was when they started to be called "Bull Phrogs." I was a crewchief on Phrogs in the Marine Corps back in the 80's. I got out March of 1989 so I never flew on the Bull Phrogs. The CH-46E was an excellent aircraft. I enjoyed my time in the Corps working and flying on these birds. Phrogs Phorever!

@@davidcovarubias4729I don't know what version you flew but all the ones I crewed, from the D, E, F and SR&M versions did not carry extend stub wings and I had never seen the A, B or C version with them either. I was fortunate to have worked and crewed on the 46 throughout the 80's and 90's. We flew 1.5 hours and RTB for refuel and then back out for 1.5 hours. Anyway man, I don't want to debate with a fellow Marine...Semperfi!!! Edit: We did have extended fuel tanks that went inside the 46 and held an extra 300 gallons of fuel. We strapped them down with cargo straps to the floor boards while the tank was sitting on the cargo rollers.

The larger stub wings were installed on CH-46E SR&M aircraft. I believe it was the later 90's that this airframes change was incorporated, long after I left the Corps. What squadron were you with? I was with HMM-161 out of Tustin.
