"Nothing but the best" gotta love the 3m furnace slayers 😂

I don't know much on the subject, are all Filtrete filters overly restrictive or is it only certain models?
@mikenovak942510 ай бұрын
@eDoc2020 the filters their running are merv 13 1 in filters. Their restrictive even when new. Once dirty they often cause a furnace to overheat and trip limits. Merv 8 is usually the highest I recommend with 1 in filters
@eDoc202010 ай бұрын
@@mikenovak9425 So lower rated FIltrete filters are fine? It would be nice if manufacturers printed the rating right on the package, I can't even find this data online for most filters. We've been using cheap pleated filters for two decades and hopefully this hasn't caused any harm. I changed the motor recently and chose the heating tap so it measures 55-66 degrees rise with the current filter, depending on the zone damper positions. The furnace spec is 35-65 degrees so this is running slightly hot and I'm worried it could have been closer to 70 with the old motor. Hopefully this hasn't caused any damage.
@mikenovak942510 ай бұрын
@eDoc2020 if you change them frequently you should be ok. Merv ratings are on side of filter for some makes. 3m uses a diffrent system to rate filters. As far as temp rise there could be more than one variable involved.

And that's why you use cable sleeves on exposed cupper conductors to prevent shorting things out when you stuff the wires back into the connection boxes. I'm amazed that it's not a requirement in the US?

Man that takes me back! I remember having belt drive motors in the truck and a selection of different belts, boxes of thermocouples and do you remember the little tubes of grease that Lennox had for their bearings?

I love seeing old beasts like this out there still running, that gas conversion in that thing getting 2 miles per gallon😅😅

that may be factory burner it looks like the Temp O Matics they made right up to 1991 same furnace as would have a oil burner in it with same heat ex-changer just no lining when used for gas

I had a Milwaukee Thermoflo furnace in my 1st house that was way oversized for 1200 sq ft. It would heat like crazy , but it would cycle off hi limit . I replaced it with a Lennox variable speed furnace and 2-ton a/c . I also ran another return air duct to second floor . I remember the heating Bill dropped in half with that new setup .

Paper wrapped wires. We have tc green wires we've been removing for years. The oil drips and is conductive. That is a beast.

My mother's house has an old furnace not quite as old as this one, and oil, not gas. A 1972 Metromatic high boy with a Beckett SR burner. Has a similar but smaller belt drive blower with a 1/4 hp motor. Spins probably 3x as fast as that one. The heat exchanger is 1/4 steel plate and has no rust. Gets 84-85 percent combustion efficiency at every service. It's never getting replaced unless the heat exchanger rusts through and I doubt that will ever happen. Neighbors house has a Trane that's old enough to have an actual Trane brand oil burner. I doubt that thing will ever need a new heat exchanger either.

that old home is probably uninsulated - so it's part of the high bills.

Good old Murphy strikes again with that ground. I think we've all \been there before with forgetting to tighten a set screw too. Thanks for ride along.

That old quality pushmatic panel tripped out just fine on that short. I hate when electricians try to say those need to be replaced. Those breakers bolt to the buss bars and way outlast some “newer” panels that burn up on the buss bar after about 20-30 years.

When we lived in Michigan, with a modern furnace, we had our gas on a budget, and ours was $100 a month. It's nothing in MI with an older furnace like I had in Mount Clemens, for a $400 one month bill, in the middle of December, January, February.....even March.

Someone's definitely gotten their money's worth out of that furnace. I'm curious -- does anyone still make a lowboy furnace and was that a humidifier on the back? Lau Blower is still around. Years ago, someone gave me two of their blowers. They look identical to the one in that furnace. Maybe they came from a similar model?

Nothing like a 50 dollar filter change for one inch filters
@renj653110 ай бұрын
aside from the rough insulation which looks good for aproaching 70 years at least the wires are still there if something modern were capable of surviving that long ( which i highly doubt ) then the wires wouldnt exist and just crumble to dust
@jeffsmith84610 ай бұрын
Glad you got them heat again. I'm sure most would just tell them to get a new furnace. It would be interesting to see how much they would save per month. No guessing, no estimating, just compare similar heating seasons with old versus new.
