Mikayla Nogueira & CANCELLING entitled influencers. are WE in the wrong or are they?!

entitled influencers… oh boy. where to begin. Mikayla Nogueira has put her foot in it… again. I feel like people have been trying to cancel poor Mikayla for a while now (she’s had backlash for using filters, claiming her skin was good genetics, promoting every makeup product under the sun) and so far nothing has worked. but now she’s being cancelled for saying that her job as an influencer is ‘hard work’ and that ‘you should try being an influencer for a day’. And this time? I get it. People are angry. It was a pretty darn tone deaf thing for an (alleged) millionaire 24 year old influencer to say, when there are people slaving away at minimum wage jobs for 12 hours a day - it’s a bit ridiculous. HOWEVER - I do also think that when it comes to entitled influencers, sometimes the internet turns into a bit of a witch hunt, and that cancelling influencers for saying daft things (like in this instance) is going a bit far. What do you guys think? x

Agree! I have worked 50 to even 65 hour weeks for decades in my career. I provide well for my husband and 3 kids. I am blessed and privileged to do so. This entitled commentary is from a very young person who hasn’t had to claw their way through real life. It will come. Eventually almost all of us have to do it. She might be on the edge of that now.

I am a dentist and there have been times when I had surgeries back to back for straight 6 hours and nurses would stick around right there with me missing their lunches,even staying past their shift sometimes and then going to the library to prepare for examinations( I would feel so guilty for holding them up, I would send them coffee to cheer them up and they would extend the same favour to me during my exams). The thing that really gets me, is that while I can understand it being a challenging job in its own way, influencers are also making huge amounts of money. Other people work hard but they don’t don’t get the opportunity to make 85,000 in an instant. So when someone gets off work at the ~terribly late~ time of 5:19 pm, they might want to remember they are literally sitting in a mansion while others work double the hours just to get food on the table.

I think being an influencer is probably more ‘work’ than what we realise, but getting in front of a camera, and being paid a huge amount of money, to put on makeup isn’t something to complain about. A lot of us put on makeup, before we go to our bad/underpaying paying jobs. She’s getting an absurd amount of money to do what the average person does before they even go to work. Definitely a privilege!

I hear what you're saying & I'm not defending Mikayla but she does a bit more than just put on morning make up for work like you & I. She's a make up artist & if you've ever seen her videos you'd see the difference. She does elaborate, dramatic stunning makeup looks that take more than 20-30 mins in the morning. She uses a lot of products which cost money, she also in my opinion gives her honest opinion on products. Which helps her followers save money, not to mention the whole filming process, edits, the meetings she mentioned & whatever else goes on behind the scenes. She has millions of followers for a reason bc she's very good at what she does. 99% of the time she's great, funny, & non-controversial. Not saying she didn't mess up by saying what she said or that she wasn't acting completely entitled & out of touch. However, we've all had moments of entitlement at some point or another for whatever reason, whether we admit or not. This 1% mistake that we all have made doesn't deserve her to be "cancelled". Which could potentially cost her livelihood. Since we're comparing her job to putting on make-up in the morning for our jobs, should we be fired from our jobs for making one mistake?

I think it's hard when you first start out but once you're somewhat well established are being paid $10k + for a promotional post it ain't hard you just get lazy. I've worked with influencers sending them free items from studios and they complain and yet we pay them and they are given a free gift for 2 photos that's all! Im a woman who has done trash removal, I’ve literally cleaned human and animal waste. Now im working doing handyman type jobs which include electrical, plumbing, and renovation work. I would say being an influencer isn’t that difficult HOWEVER, i am pretty hard on myself and emotionally kinda fragile so being an influencer isn’t something i would ever want to do. Especially since i can clearly draw a line between me at work vs me at home whereas influencers cannot. There entire “lifestyle” is there job which could have other obstacles I couldn’t understand.

I'm not saying being an influencer is the hardest job in the world but if you think about it, it's probably really challenging. It's not just making content. You basically have to be a brand manager as well. It's like running a mini company with yourself as the product. You can never switch off, you constantly have to deal with alot of abuse online because people are horrible, it's a long grind to gather the level of following needed to make real money. It's not as hard as being a doctor or sanitation worker but it's probably harder than the standard 9-5 office job if we are being honest

Time and opportunity are two different things: those 24hrs that you have, one can assume, are not filled with the same struggles, strifes, concerns and opportunities that my 24hrs are. I'm a teacher; I have a very livable salary, but it doesn't matter how much harder I work, I won't just earn more money for it. I'm a tutor too, but there's only so much of that I can do without burning out because teaching is fucking hard. I work in in the evening, on the weekend and sometimes early in the morning before work. I still won't earn more for that. There are so many people in my position who work more and earn less, and that's not their fault at all. Your 24hrs are of the same quantity, but not made of the same experiences.

I think these influencers need to be introduced to a mind-blowing concept: not everyone needs to know exactly what you feel and think. Even if you are having a bad day, it doesn't mean you need to go on an internet rant and post it for millions of people to see. Maybe they should try processing their crappy day in silence or maybe have a chat with their family and close friend and reflect a bit on the situation. I think a lot of people would easily swap places with Mikayla in a heartbeat. Being an influencer is not hard but there is a lot of work involved to put out the content your audience wants from you. People who work 9-5s or in professional fields have to worry about a plethora of things: showing up to work on time, making enough to provide for themselves or their families, pleasing your higher-ups and colleagues, caring for their well-beings in the midst of it all, and a whole bunch of other stuff. Mikayla doesn’t have to worry about any of that as she’s her own boss. She can wake up, film something, edit it, share it, and then go about her day. She chooses when to work and that’s fine. But to act as if her job is comparable to ours is a bit of a reach.

I think its how one defines " hard work". is it physically hard ? no probably not. is it hard? yes it is esp if youre bigger influencer. it definitely is not for everyone. now it absolutely is highly rewarding job, but its not easy if you do it seriously and most people need to do it seriously to make money. as a person who did 9-5 and now is my own boss , it just comes with different set of challenges. its actually weird you think people who are self employed do not worry about keeping up with their schedule, providing for themselves and their families, having good ties with other people in their sphere. being your own boss does not exclude you from humane worries. there are worries I didnt have when i worked 9-5 and got fixed pay. I feel less secure financially in a way because I do not qualify for certain financial aid due to sickness or pregnancy due me being self employed. now i need to do taxes, and i didnt when I had 9-5, because the company I worked for did that for me, as well as pay for healthcare. depending on activity one might have significantly more financial commitments as well as expenses. being a social media influencer or streamer might sound easy, but... Im not so sure. I could be maybe a streamer, but influencer? I couldnt handle the criticism over my body, I already struggle, so thats a job that would be very hard for me. I think its worth asking whether people would swap places with her if they get the same pay as they get for their current job , and would she trade her job for a regular 9-5 job with the pay she gets rn.

You have a point. While it HAS become an industry, they're only profiting off of ads and stuff, not really giving a service (models serve magazines, teachers teach, designers serve products etc). Influencers get to be themselves, talk about their lives yadada. I'd say the only real job they do is brainstorming ideas for a content, which isn't hard given how it's all about what they do (eg: get ready with ME, what *I* eat in a day, MY morning routine). I would actually appreciate them more if they call themselves 'entertainers' instead.

I work in mental health so I work all the time. So while a job is a job, I think the salary paid does influence the situation since a lot of people have to work long hours to have a home, a car or two feed their children. While an influencers’ 8 hours can be a multi million dollar home and countless designer purchases, a 12 hour day can barely cover the expenses of an entire family.

I’m an art and history teacher with an emergency cert in special Ed (emotional/behavioral). I get up at 5am, prep from 6-8am, teach till 3pm, clean/meetings till 4pm. All the points you and other youtubers made hit the nail on the head. Life is hard. End of story. Now, being an influencer/content creator is undoubtedly easier than most jobs worked by your average layperson. Consider for a moment Mikayla, as an influencer with a massive following, might have a lot of outreach and marketing directly with brands. She might have meetings, contract reviews and other business dealings with executives of whatever brands she's working with. Her workload might feel quite heavy in this case, especially if she doesn't have a team retained to assist her. I think arguing with her about it being "hard work" is pointless because there could be so much behind the scenes that we just don't see given how massive she is online (this goes for any influencer with millions of followers and possible brand deals). It's not about difficulty. It's about the average person working just as much or more, and getting paid peanuts in comparison. People aren't really upset she's complaining about a job that's easy (mostly). They're mad she's complaining when her compensation vastly outweighs any difficulty or pressures she's experienced. This is what she needs to understand. This is where her insensitivity really shined and fueled the backlash. It all comes down to both creators AND audiences being sympathetic. I'll bet all this negativity would've been greatly reduced if that video hadn't come off as utterly condescending.

I agree, every job has its issues but when you get online and say your job is harder than most it's insane. I've worked as a cashier and there are some days when I hated going to work because some people are so mean at grocery stores, but if someone asked me if my job was one of the hardest I would laugh. My parents work at a meatpacking plant and come back super freaking tired and work in cold temperatures, that's hard work. Working construction and lugging heavy materials all day is hard work. Even when it comes to emotional labor, working in a hospital and having to save lives is hard work. I've done many jobs but my easier one is being a content creator. I get to set my own schedule, be creative, and attend cool events. It's by far the easiest job I've ever had. The hardest part of my work is responding to hateful comments and motivating myself when I'm feeling sad. Only that first part is something most jobs don't have to deal with but at least on days I'm feeling down, I know that I can take some time off.

Someone on TikTok, I don't remember her name sadly, put it very beautifully: You should always complain upwards or outwards, never downwards. If you're in a very very privileged position, like an influencer, complaining to your audience isn't ok. People would do anything to have her job. Instead she could complain to other influencers in private, or to anyone above her who is even more privileged than her. Imagine complaining to your coworker about how much harder your work is now after you got the promotion that you both wanted. You just don't do that. Because like you said in the video, her job isn't "hard". It can be exhausting mentally, it can be tedious, it can be risky in terms of getting paid or not, it can take a long time from start to finish before you see the end of the project... But it's not hard. What's hard is getting up at 5 every morning to clean an entire daycare, including toilets with poop smears in them and pee on the floors around them, food smushed around on the furniture, spit and snot on the windows, throwing away heavy bags of trash, carrying big boxes of equipment back and forth, picking up trash off the floor because people are too lazy to pick it up if they miss the bin, feeling invisible and like what you do is pointless as you do the same job every single day... All while your bones and muscles constantly aches from the way too hard work, spending thousands on trying to treat the health issues the job is giving you, while getting paid so little it's atrocious. I'm soon 31 and I still haven't had the money to be able to move away from a home that's so filled with rotten wood and mold that it's affecting me and my pets health, but sure Mikayla, being an influencer sounds like too much hard work.

I genuinely have mixed feelings about content creators. On one side, it’s a high stress-high reward job. Having to create content that is interesting and engaging, dealing with constant comments regarding every single thing about you, and having little to no privacy. A lot of people struggle dealing with bullying, burn out, and stress. At the same time, these influencers need to get a grip. They are living a lifestyle that the majority of people cannot even imagine. They spent more money on a single purse than most people make in a month. They live in mansions, go on amazing vacations, and spend money on luxury goods. $85,000 PER shoutout on tiktok, I literally cannot even fathom that. People are starving, cannot afford heating, cannot afford Christmas gifts for their children, and are working multiple jobs with no benefits just to pay their rent and they’re being lectured by someone with astronomical amounts of money about how hard THEIR life is? Of course it makes people angry. Yeah, maybe I am bitter and jealous. Maybe I don’t think it’s fair. I just wish…I just wish people were a little more grateful for their positions? I think one of the most frustrating things to hear from an influencer that has grown up privileged is that everyone has the same 24 hours and is equally capable of achieving the same. The sad truth is that there isn’t equal opportunity in this world, and in most cases those people at the top haven’t actually had to put in the most work because they were born with either the finance or connections to put themselves there. The sad truth is that most of the population works themselves to absolute exhaustion just to be able to afford life. I used to come home daily in tears after my last job and that’s not because I was in some special situation where I was bullied - it was simply because real life jobs are hard. And if those influencers were put in normal lives, with normal pay checks and bills to pay they would not be complaining about their jobs. I don’t ever want to bash them for what they have because that would just be because of jealousy; but it’s not okay at all for them to compare themselves to the general public because privilege is real and most of us don’t have it.

I think this is one of the problems with the ease and prevalence of recording ourselves. I'm not saying this is exactly the case here. But, I imagine someone could be having a horrible day, they are stressed, overwhelmed, and tired, and then they make a video about it and post it. Instead of sleeping on it and letting that feeling pass a little bit. I think every job has its difficulties and frustrations and we should be able to express that. But not in the way it's done here. I have seen other people say you know like, "there are things that are difficult, my mental health has suffered, I needed to find a way to balance work and life in this new situation. But I'm so thankful to all of you and this life I have and I appreciate that my struggles are not as serious as others but I did want to get this off my chest and share." I think you can do it and still express appreciation and show that you understand you are in a privileged position. I can't say their job is harder or not than others. She’s young. It was inevitable if not this something else. The only way to move up is to learn from your mistakes and get back up again. She’s in the limelight and “feels” it’s harder because of her mental health but a lot of us struggle with mental health challenges and have to show up and deal with worse people, hours, or uncomfortable workplaces, lacking sleep and health. We are not ALL capable of being an influencer to as many as she has. I’m over 40. I’m also a disabled single mom who can’t afford to buy makeup so not only can I not afford to buy products to influence, but I will probably not appeal to people under 40 and most of makeup consumers are under 40, in my opinion. Especially those who massively buy. Being young is a privilege on its own and one day she’ll see that too. She’s incredibly lucky the opportunity was available to her at her age. We didn’t have TikTok or much social media when I was her age so influencers are a rather modern career choice.

Find that Mikayla was just having a bad day. We're all entitled to a bad day once in a while. I think being an influencer is difficult is that you have to be creative and make people want to follow you and how to market yourself and pricing yourself appropriately for your services. I can't get people to follow me worth a darn as a writer (I wish I could) but that's where I find influencing and self-marketing tough. I wish I could figure out how to get people to read my books and buy them and watch my videoes and TikToks, but I have realized that measuring yourself by those things is dangerous and can really be damaging. It's when I start measuring myself that way, I start sounding entitled and rude and selfish and saying stuff like that. I wonder how influencers avoid falling into that trap! But I have empathy for when that happens.

I feel that as a non influencer. I don’t have a career set yet so I float around sometimes and when I’m applying and get rejected I do be feeling salty. I’m sure it’s not the same but the stress of not always getting that one good paying job as opposed to the other less paying jobs is def not the best time :/

@@ciarajones3943 that's so dumb. I know a ton of people trying to earn money on social media and only a few of them are able to exceed 100 subs and 1000 likes. It's not that easy to earn money on social media, especially enough money to not have a job. Your perception is skewed. Precisely because the internet is accessible to everyone, making good money is definitely hard because fot he competition. There isn't a job in the world where you have to compete the entire global population to succeed. And precisely because it's easy to start, it's hard to become someone that people will follow for brands to start paying you. BTW this formula has existed since forever, I mean brand deals have been a thing ever since celebrities have been around and soccer players make more per hour than your entire annual salary, all that while kicking a freaking ball on a grassy field 😂 I don't get why people are so angry that regular people are finally also able to make more money. Literally so many famous influencers come from regular families that wouldn't have a possibility to earn so much money. Back in the day you needed to be a special human to access such amounts of money but nowadays regular people also have that possibility. Why is that such a bad thing that the poor and the middle class are now able to earn more money, raise more money for their ideas/causes, start an independent career? All this hate towards the influencers and what they do is so senseless.

You are simply a beautiful soul inside and out. I am so proud of you for going against the crowd and trying to give all young ladies a good sense of self. I feel badly for people that get "called out" as you say. It's very frustrating. Do some people need to be put in their place? Yes - form time-to-time. However, as you noted, if someone has millions of subscribers and even half of them are trying to "school her" - my God - that would be enough to make anyone want to end it all! It's too much. Having the same 24 hours means not having two jobs with NO extra time to set up a business. It means NOT having a maid. Not having a nanny. Not having any help. These things save you a TON OF TIME so you get EXTRA time to focus on social media or being a celebrity or whatever. Most colleges will go over this theory in depth and in fact it is a truth that NOT EVERYONE HAS the same 24 hours in a day. What you have and start out with DEEPLY affects how and where you start out at and what level you start at.

I’m 19, worked at McDonald’s for some time, now studying visual arts (cinema/photography/sound/script/…). Honestly influencers have totally the social pressure on them, always new things, not bad info. Good lighting, editing, body, skin, and idealistic things. They deal with more harassment than a normal worker. But as a worker, the physical and mental exhaustion of a routine is horrible, you feel trapped if you don’t love the work, and well the payment isn’t that good, but influencers can also not be successful or end their careers on 1 day.

Mikayla is super talented with her makeup and I believe she was just having one of those days. I definitely could not do that job! I worked on my feet for not a great wage most of my life. Overtime and all that. Now at 41 I have rheumatoid arthritis and can no longer physically do my job so I had to switch it up. Now I get to be a caseworker for substance abuse and mental health and I couldn’t be happier!! Wish it paid like an influencer though 😂

Think a lot of us that work normal jobs just feel a lot of different things when we see these people getting paid ginormous amounts of money to create something that might take a couple of hours Even if it takes them a few weeks to make something the amount of money you're making can retire you before the age 30. And I think a lot of us are just really pissed at that considering people who have worked their whole lives for retirement don't even have retirement

Unfortunately getting famous on the Internet has it’s downfalls. Peoples egos and heads blow Tf up. She’s absolutely got it easier than people who go out there and bust their asses at their work. Mikayla used to work at Ulta when she started ticktok! So she has hard to work a regular job. So she should know how blessed she is to be where she's at and be greatful to do what she does. She's already made more money than most people will make in a LIFETIME!!!! Like what are you complaining about? She rubs me the wrong way with her attitude. Prior work experience is very important in this case. If I didn't work in factories every weekend in my last year of hs and first year of college I would never be this happy being able to make money out of music. I hear these entitled Nepo baby musicians complaining about studio sessions and tours and Im just here being very grateful even when Im touring (playing 2-3 days in a row every week the whole of winter) in a car, being hungry b4 I find the time to eat, getting dressed in a smelly backstage, being exhausted, sleep deprived, sleeping in cheap rooms for rent, carrying mu own instrument and luggage....and they complain in their private tour jets. Why? Because they never worked a day of hard labour in their life and therefore have no idea how to be grateful. I would take the cons of touring over 8 hours a day of work in a bloody factory any day! I'm so grateful being able to make money out of my dream job even when it's not ideal, and so should all these celebrities and influencers

I can relate to your general interest in a topic and going down the rabbit hole and then wanting to share about it ~for sure. I can also relate to being from the MySpace generation, I’m 33, And having an awkward response to TikTok. I’ve checked it out a bit and do have an account that I hardly ever utilize. When I do it because I find TT shorts on KZbin made by accounts that I’ve spent time with on YT, and like, then may want to check out other videos they’ve made on the platform that they haven’t posted to YT. I found a hilarious comedian that way that makes foreign language similarities parody videos of himself speaking French, Spanish, and English. I appreciate the points you made here, about your experiences with the position you’ve held as an influencer over the previous 7 to 8 years. and how cool that you have the reference of 11 other positions prior to compare it to! That seems quite a relevant and interesting point to include. I think it’s kind of you to compare other types of jobs such as nursing, mining, how about working as a grocery clerk, to what it takes to be an influencer. There’s so much that could be said about what we are suited for well as individuals and what makes work difficult for anyone. I certainly agree that the task of having to put oneself forth with consistency at a 9 to 5 that involves working as a team with other people has got to be significantly different than working on ones own. As someone who's a low income, single mother, struggling to get by on assistance, don't even tell me that working til 5:19 pm and being an Influencer is such hard work. I'm trying to become a nurse-you know how HARD it is just to get into damn NURSING SCHOOL?! It takes time, lots of time, money, lots of money, determination, dedication, discipline and motivation. You know what was hard work? Applying for hours and days for a job at my local hospital, driving 25 minutes away every day for a nursing assistant program when gas is $6 something per gallon on a fixed income. This is why these "influencers" piss me off, because they are so out of touch with reality and look down on others who are actually putting in work and contributing to society by going through the actual motions of life and going to work for 8, 9, 10, 12 hours a day, not being able to spend time with their kids, living in damn near poverty, living paycheck to paycheck. I'd like to see these influencers go to work at an actual place of employment, then post a video of how hard their day is, posting "content" online from the comfort of their $2 million dollar home.

I do emphatize with her because being an influencer is not exactly a stable job like you have to keep making contents so your account is not pushed down by the algorithm. Brand deals don't always come by easy and some are hard to deal with (process of payments/revising contracts/additional request/reshooting content) and if your juggling with a few brands its really exhausting, and top of that anwering emails and doing meetings with PR person the brands. I can definitely understand where she's coming from but then again all jobs are different. It may be easy for you but it may be hard on others. Comparing jobs is so stupid, everyone's got a different path in life.

Totally agree. And I think it’s valid that people didn’t like what she said and criticized her but these hate and rage pile-ons the internet always does to people for even minor mistakes are so sad. It’s possible to respectfully educate people on why what they‘ve said is ignorant and if thousands of people already did, just don’t say anything. If people actually new what all these comments and range did to people they would think twice about bashing someone for something that was said over a year or more ago, people change they learn and they grow & I’m pretty sure everyone has complained about their job once or twice without thinking about every single persons reaction just we don’t have millions of people watching, she already said before she made the comments she wasn’t in the best head space & I think maybe we can all agree that it was poorly phrased and just move on and get on with our lives, As I said there are influencers out there and even beauty brand owners that have done and said much much worse!!! I literally cannot believe the ignorance and entitlement behind Molly-Mae Hague’s comments. If you are disabled, or a full-time carer, or a single parent, or any number of other groups who have their time eaten into by circumstance, then hearing people suggest they just need to “apply themselves” or “work harder” is just making us feel more shit than we already do. I’m a janitor/ event manager at an Agricultural complex. I do everything from shoveling horse stalls, to setting up for weddings ,parties, meetings, cleaning the mess up after said events, driving a giant tractor and anything else that can get crammed into my 12 hr days. 5:19???? That’s just precious!!! How about 5:19 am until I can’t go any longer!!!!!!
