@oldsyphilitic7 жыл бұрын
I know what you mean but actually he did get a lot of recognition. As 15 year old living in Yorkshire I knew about him back in 1965. In many ways he was the original guitar hero, who played for Dylan on his seminal electric move. Remember that this is at the time that Clapton was playing with the Yardbirds and hadn't been named 'God'. Albums such as 'Live Adventures of' and back in 1966, Mike Bloomfield was the man. I think his health was poor and he got involved with heroin, probably as a direct consequence, and he wasn't interested in the star thing with the result that the record companies soon lost interest in him. It is a great tragedy but thankfully he has left some wonderful music.

Bloomfield's parents were very wealthy, extremely wealthy and socialites in chicago. Mike wanted nothing to do with that, at 14 years old he started having their limo driver sneaking him to the downtown blues joints, drop him off in the limo, he managed at 14 to get in these clubs and watch and then around 15 started playing on stage with them, limo driver would wait for him in parking lot then drive him home. that's how he became to be known as this young white kid blues guitar prodigy in Chicago area, you wouldn't believe the blues iconics he jammed with at such a young age and they respected him.

So sad he died of a drug overdose as so many others at that time.

That son a bitch! I've been playing guitar for a good 30 years, and I'm 61 years old now. Started out on accordion in 1961; traded it in for a drum kit when the Beatles came out in 1964, and finally decided in mid-life that I'd like to learn guitar. So I took myself to a pawn shop in Jacksonville, FL in 1973, and bought an Epiphone acoustic. I've always learned by ear, so I'd buy myself a few bottles of Boone's Farm on the way home every night, and sit on the couch and drink wine and fuck with the guitar, to see what worked and what didn't. I still play, but I'll never be anywhere near as good as this young, rich, Jewish guitar player who somehow really and truly got the blues. One of a kind, Michael. I love you, and may you RIP.

Monterey Pop '67. My poor brother. He was headed for the '68 Newport Pop Festival in his 1960 Ford Falcon. Mike Bloomfield was his guitar hero and Electric Flag was appearing there too. Somewhere around San Clemente, the u-joint in his driveshaft seized and shattered blowing a 5" diameter hole in the backseat floorboard. He was lucky the shrapnel didn't kill him. Not sure if my brother ever got the chance to see Mike play live before he died in '81. He certainly owned every single album that Mike ever played on. Nothing new to anyone , but for being born rich, Mike had more than his share of problems,starting with executives and agents that took advantage of the fact that most musicians are more interested in music then money. I blame them, and good time friends, that screwed him over, he was so kind, and gentle, and used the word groovy every sentence. We used to love that about him. To listen to Mike, somehow, you tap into his soul. No one sounds like him. He reminds me of Bonimasa, but different phrasing.

After the second album when Bloomfield switched to a Gibson Les Paul, the price of that guitar went through the roof. (Clapton`s use of a Les Paul on the first John Mayall album didnt hurt,either!)
