track 9 from the album 'nish' by mike hiratzka
There was a couple days of solid rain in Miami sometime during our third month of quarantine, and I decided to go outside and record some of the sounds of the storm with my Zoom recorder. I played some piano over the recording, and the basis for the song was laid down very quickly. The kids were messing around in the hallway with a skateboard, sitting on it and rolling back and forth, so I recorded that as well, it became the “thunder” underneath the rain. Throughout the album there are lots of little recordings of random things that happened around the house during quarantine. In a house with two adults and three young people it was difficult, especially with everyone home all the time, to have it completely silent for recording, so I ended up just leaving a lot of things in the record. It really makes the album feel like a time capsule from our year at home during the pandemic.
