The Lab NYC is BULLDOG Gin and Mixmag's weekly live stream and post-work unwind, where we showcase the finest DJs direct from our Brooklyn office. This Thursday, December 19, Detroit originator, Mike Huckaby brings out his deep house and techno for an intimate set.
A long-time sound designer and educator, Mike Huckaby has been around the block. Dating back to his time with Detroit’s former Record Time store, he has been developing a vast knowledge of music for decades. Over the years, he has been busy producing music for his labels, Deep Transportation and S Y N T H, as well as remixes for artists such as Deepchord, Juan Atkins, Loco Dice, Vladislav Delay and more.
Beyond his own accomplishments, he has been helping to develop the next generation of electronic music producers. He taught music production classes using Native Instruments and Ableton software at YouthVille, a former youth centre founded by the Detroit Youth Foundation. He also was a guest teacher at Berlin’s Campus Efeuweg community school for their MASCHINE beat-making workshops. To this day, he continues to innovate the industry through his own projects and those of others.

Mike was one of the kindest and most accessible people I ever met in Detroit's music scene. I was lucky to get to speak with him often as he frequented a store I worked at, and he was just perpetually curious and engaged with everyone he taught and worked with. An absolute beacon of friendliness in an often insular city. Rest in Peace my friend, thank you for all the light you brought into the world.

Dude was nice as hell. I always bothered him to record a mix so I could release it (just how small we were back then in Detroit). He was reluctant to commit to a mix. Always thought that was strange cuz his live mixing was so perfect. At one house party where he played for 40 minutes, I saw around 100 white label 12" covers with vinyl in, or around them all over the floor behind him. Nothing seemed planned. That house party also had DJs Liz Copeland, Mike Clark, Scott Zacharias, Tony Ollivierra, Michael Geiger, Erik Tolonen, and Eric Kim. Couldn't get Theo or Kenny that night.

This is true! He would often play gigs right down on the floor and had zero issues with you coming up to him to give some praise, ask about a song that was on rotation, etc. Very friendly and approachable guy for sure. A true legend gone way too soon

Let me tell you, if you had the chance to meet Mike, you wouldn't have been disappointed. I had the chance to hang out with him after a gig in Miami, June 2019. What a kind and humble guy. He let me drive him all over the city while I most probably talked his ear off playing tour guide. The whole time he just smiled and shared stories from his travels. I'll never forget that night.

Yeah you can hear the isolation problems in the recording - looks like the turntables are sat on an empty Kallax unit, I bet the bass was hoooooowling in there. Must’ve been a real struggle to monitor anything in that environment

incredible set that seems to be plagued with some sort of ground hum that can only be blamed on some sort of setup issue. idk my bass is set at like -1 and it was still very noticeable. annoying but honestly it won't stop me from coming back to this set

Some real bangers in there but seem like Mr. Huckbay is first and foremost a producer and a DJ secondly, some transitions made it a bit hard to focus entirely on the music. Regardless I have big respect for this man, a true legend in the biz.
