Wrong. Brian needed Mike just as much as the other way around. They worked TOGETHER to make those early hits. Brian was the inventive one, but Mike's lyrics made the songs accessible for the audience and gave them a commercial sound. If that didn't happen, then Brian would not have had the chance to even get onto the later projects like Pet Sounds.

@@dj71162 That’s how Mike tells it. He takes full credit for songs that were produced and written by Brian for changing some of the verses. None of those early songs had Love listed as the sole writer, he was a contributor on some and certainly not all. Gary Usher wrote all the car songs and Brian always hired other lyricists. To this day it’s highly disputable about what lyrics he actually wrote, not saying he didn’t contribute to some but he is over reaching when he says he made the band a commercial success.

Sad that Mike Love had to do a lawsuit to get credit for songs he co-wrote because Brian's father and than his handlers didn't want to credit Mike.
@gerrydooley9518 ай бұрын
well sort of, Murry Wilson was handling the publishing and was the one who denied Mike credit. Brian tried but was unable to go against his father. Eventually Brian sued in the late 1980's regarding the publishing and won a large settlement. Mike then sued Brian and won in court. The general feeling is that Mike overreached in terms of taking credit for songs he barely had anything to do with. In terms of the songs: Brian produced them , arranged the vocals, wrote and arranged the music and mixed them and in some cases supplied some lyrics.
@pauldrew36968 ай бұрын
@@gerrydooley951 He supplied more than some. Generally when working with Mike he would have mostly everything worked out and Mike would weigh in on the lyrics, sometimes changing only a verse, sometimes more. It was common knowledge that Mike couldn’t write complete songs that had any sophistication the very same reason he was never the sole lyricist. Despite his claims, Mikes lyrics were relatively easy to spot. Some were catchy, others corny but IMO he gives himself way too much credit.Don’t forget almost all the car song lyrics were from Gary Usher and Pet sounds from Tony Asher. Mike was simply a huge pain in the ass to Brian from 1966 on.

@@ReeseChown Mike Love couldn’t be any more of a different kind of person than Brian Wilson even if such a thing was possible. I have often wondered how two people so completely opposite of each other could have been in a band together for such a long time… but then again I’ve noticed that these super-talented, creative genius types like Brian are somehow often attracted to these domineering, narcissistic figures (Mike, Landy, Murry, etc), and almost welcome their toxicity. I mean, Murry was his dad, and we don’t get to choose our parents… but so much of Brian’s self-worth was tied up in seeking Murry’s approval. At least in the beginning it was. As for Eugene Landy, he was just a monster… and Mike is just a horrible garbage person, end of.
