Wrong. Brian needed Mike just as much as the other way around. They worked TOGETHER to make those early hits. Brian was the inventive one, but Mike's lyrics made the songs accessible for the audience and gave them a commercial sound. If that didn't happen, then Brian would not have had the chance to even get onto the later projects like Pet Sounds.

@@dj71162 That’s how Mike tells it. He takes full credit for songs that were produced and written by Brian for changing some of the verses. None of those early songs had Love listed as the sole writer, he was a contributor on some and certainly not all. Gary Usher wrote all the car songs and Brian always hired other lyricists. To this day it’s highly disputable about what lyrics he actually wrote, not saying he didn’t contribute to some but he is over reaching when he says he made the band a commercial success.

@@pauldrew3696 When has Mike ever taken full credit? He contributed to the songs, but he himself has praised Brian as a collaborator. He was literally crying, saying how much he loves him in the recent documentary.

Sad that Mike Love had to do a lawsuit to get credit for songs he co-wrote because Brian's father and than his handlers didn't want to credit Mike.
@gerrydooley951
@gerrydooley951 8 ай бұрын
well sort of, Murry Wilson was handling the publishing and was the one who denied Mike credit. Brian tried but was unable to go against his father. Eventually Brian sued in the late 1980's regarding the publishing and won a large settlement. Mike then sued Brian and won in court. The general feeling is that Mike overreached in terms of taking credit for songs he barely had anything to do with. In terms of the songs: Brian produced them , arranged the vocals, wrote and arranged the music and mixed them and in some cases supplied some lyrics.
@pauldrew3696
@pauldrew3696 8 ай бұрын
@@gerrydooley951 He supplied more than some. Generally when working with Mike he would have mostly everything worked out and Mike would weigh in on the lyrics, sometimes changing only a verse, sometimes more. It was common knowledge that Mike couldn’t write complete songs that had any sophistication the very same reason he was never the sole lyricist. Despite his claims, Mikes lyrics were relatively easy to spot. Some were catchy, others corny but IMO he gives himself way too much credit.Don’t forget almost all the car song lyrics were from Gary Usher and Pet sounds from Tony Asher. Mike was simply a huge pain in the ass to Brian from 1966 on.

@@Shikta-poobah67 True that! For context, Mike singing songs from Brian is especially off-putting since he had such a big problem with the lyrics on SMiLE. @@ReeseChown Mike Love couldn’t be any more of a different kind of person than Brian Wilson even if such a thing was possible. I have often wondered how two people so completely opposite of each other could have been in a band together for such a long time… but then again I’ve noticed that these super-talented, creative genius types like Brian are somehow often attracted to these domineering, narcissistic figures (Mike, Landy, Murry, etc), and almost welcome their toxicity. I mean, Murry was his dad, and we don’t get to choose our parents… but so much of Brian’s self-worth was tied up in seeking Murry’s approval. At least in the beginning it was. As for Eugene Landy, he was just a monster… and Mike is just a horrible garbage person, end of.

Mike Love actually is a Right Wing MAGA Trumpster. He has the rights to the "touring" Beach Boys. Mike Love made the Beach Boys play fund raisers for Trump in 2016 and 2020. When Mike Love did the MAGA fund raisers, Brian Wilson and Al Jardine put out a press release that they are NOT Trump supporters and do not agree with what Mike Love did. the entire below is my personal opinion: kokomo. thats hilarious. my dad was so proud that he was at the jardine (if my recollection is correct) studio in carmel ca when that was being written / recorded in the late 80s / very early 90s, about the time i became a 'disappointment' of a son, which was determined in 1991 or so. i listened to the beach boys with my dad, alan b richmond sr the 'big time' radio 'personality' dj and station programmer (who undoubtedly helped these guys get and maintain their careers with all the other major media owned stations throughout the nation that gate kept, decided, and disseminated musical 'culture' to the masses over the airwaves. i cant help but wonder if unconscious sexual assault that sends people to the er for rape kits happens throughout the entire entertainment industry, including back in those days, or if thats only certain 'rumored' segments, and seemingly or reportedly common in the military if you check reports by the department of defense. i wonder if my dads pentagon channel show ever discussed those facts and statistics while celebrating our nations military might and machinery / weapons, which is probably 'good' that we have against adversaries, but at what 'liberties' do we allow the servicemen to get away with for their 'duty'), until my b*lls dropped and i hit puberty, and then i moved on to 'my own' music (often heard only on alternative, college, and public radio stations, at least initially until the majors possibly realized they could capitalize on it) (post punk, new wave, alternative, punk rock, death rock, 'goth' (which my dad claimed bauhaus merely sounded like the moody blues, because of course everything, including rock and roll, was 'invented' by the baby boomers) etc, while still listening to and observing the 'commercial' successes of major label acts), while actually truly surfing, not standing around on weekends, or photo shoots, posing with my board and selling a 'fantasy' even though i argue that the 1980s neon decade kicks the shit out of anything fantasy wise that the boomer long board generation, who at that time decided to ditch long hair and bell bottom corduroys for yuppie status and things like polo shirts, volvos and saabs and porsches, and upgraded houses and exotic vacations) ever did :), but perhaps i am 'biased' like cr02 chrome cassettes and dolby (to the point where i remember sleep awakening drunken late night phone calls from people telling me that my generation uses 'disposable surfboards', and often criticism and reprimands telling me i need to 'let my surfboard wax dry and 'hit the books' (which, people should check my college classes grade transcripts (before, during, and after the period that i finally said 'f*ck it, im going to surf and do what i want on my own timing and at my own 'peril') and see how i fared in my studies of major, which i have often been questioned 'what is art going to do for you in life?', presumably monetarily, which i suppose may actually be correct if you look at how many musicians, artists, actors, and other creatives end up being utterly used and abused by the systems and industries that exploit them, something my dad did NOT ONCE (surf) do with me nor in front of me my entire life. but i am not here to air grievances or anything. perhaps i was merely 'triggered' by kokomo, (seriously, that drum machine beat is hilarious, and i say that as a drummer) the beach boys, parents who name sons 'jr' as mini me extensions or appendages of their fathers, sons and everything they do, who are assumed property or puppets of their parents, and their companies, connections, etc, sons as 'disappointments' and highly misunderstood, including gender / sexuality which was falsely or not correctly assumed as 'gay' a generic narrow assumption, etc., brother siblings that participate in narcissistic abuse initiated or on behalf of their parents, etc. anyway, the wall of sound of that period was great. shout out to the wrecking crew, the musicians who were basically responsible for the majority of 'quintessential west coast / california' songs and sounds on the radio at that time, and who 'anonymously' played backing on many of the radio hits of that era, including the beach boys if i am not mistaken. carol kaye is a rad bassist, and the first, or most certainly one of, female bassists to make influential music.
