Rare stuff indeed. Dennis comes off as such a likable, really engaging guy. He's actually having a thoughtful conversation with the guy, asking him questions too, you just don't ever see this with people who have lived through the biggest kind of fame for years and years. They're usually pretty jaded, understandably. Dennis was a cool dude, Californian through-and-through, a genuine wasted beach bum. He also had the Wilson genius gene for sure.

@@sonjiapbooth it’s in a lot of the history about the band. Mike and Al did everything they could to take charge and turn out the Wilson’s from having the upper hand. While Al has gone back to being a big supporter of Brian’s, he was on Mike’s side in the late seventies, early eighties

@@sonjiapbooth Al's motivation was to right the ship that had become disturbingly dysfunctional at that time due to the brothers' drug and alcohol abuse and Brain's untreated (or maltreated) mental illness. While not related, Al was with the band from the beginning and it was his career, livelihood, and baby as much as it was for the others.

Sad story indeed. I think an overwhelming factor in his long decline was the fallout of his experience with Manson & family. He carried such a monumental amount of guilt over that, even though he never was an active participant in that crap. I think it was just the burden of knowing that he unwittingly introduced Manson to Hollywood that played such a huge role in his downward spiral. Really sad stuff.

This is awesome! A rare beardless (some stubble) 1977 Dennis Wilson. I always thought it was around this time where he starts to age rapidly, but he still looks very good here. I guess by 1979/80 is when things start to go downhill fast. An immense talent who unfortunately couldn't escape the drugs and alcohol. He is still sorely missed.

Yes, I feel the same. Such a vital, interesting, and really engaged person. It's nice to see this interview with Dennis. They always seem so few, when you can find them. And appearance-wise, he seems pretty healthy, as well. It seems like, seeing the available photos of him, there are the ones where he is young and healthy, from an earlier period with the Beach Boys, where his hair is either bleach blond or natural. Then you see the ones of him later on, where his hair is sort of straggly, and his beard is long and untrimmed. I don't particularly like looking at him in those latter-day pictures (although I know he had alcohol, and drug issues at the time, so my heart goes out to him. I should say went out to him, as I know he has passed). But this is a nice interview with him, when he seemed alright. Appreciate the interview. I'm thinking it must have gone on longer. If more footage from it could be seen, what would be great.

@@toastertwo1602 I have never seen Dennis beardless in 1978 or 79, but in pictures he does look ragged starting in 79. He was bearded for most of 1977 and on the POB album he looked older with the big beard. But here after the POB he still looks like the old Dennis of the 60's and early 70's.

@@westy40 I think one of the best pictures of Dennis was on the inside fold out album "Sunflower", from 1970. He looked very healthy there. Clean-shaven, hair longer than he'd had it in the '60's, but nicely styled. Apparently there was an interval where he'd had a very full beard, when he did P.O.B., then shaved the beard sometime before this interview. He still looked good there, clean-shaven and hair attractively-styled seven years after the "Sunflower" picture shoot. But his deterioration was obvious, from either the late '70's, or definitely 1980. He lost his original voice, due to excessive drugs and alcohol, consumption, and it became a sort of rough growl. When he sang, he began to sound like Joe Cocker. Add to that his scraggly hair and long, untrimmed beard, and the behavior he was beginning to exhibit in public, and he was a far cry from the attractive Dennis of the '60's into the '70's. But thank you for including this interview with Dennis. It showed how he was before the fall.

I met Dennis while recording an album for Capitol Records at Brother Studio, the same time he was finishing up P.O.B. He walked into the control room while I was doing a guitar overdub and wanted to meet me, saying he liked what he was hearing.. We ended up sitting in the studio at the piano while Dennis played piano and sang some songs from his album. Shortly thereafter, Dennis went over and sat down on his drum kit and we jammed as a duo for several minutes. At the end of the night, he apologized for interrupting my session - which he certainly did not have to! - and then proceeded to tear up my entire day's studio bill, about $800 worth!

I knew a drummer who toured w/ him & he said he was full of himself but that side of him isn't on display here. The public never heard from Dennis much, just saw pics of him surfing & carrying on. This shows he was a much more serious artist, played other instruments too. And played a bigger role in the band than was believed. I remember feeling bad when I saw the LA Times headline that he had drowned.

⁠From what I can tell (I never knew or even met Dennis on a person-to-person level, so all I have to go on is what I see, hear, and read), he was a very multifaceted and layered person. Here in this clip we see the calm, thoughtful, intelligent, and friendly side, but I’ve often heard he could also be quite volatile and had a very short fuse and hot temper. I’ve read several accounts of him being quick to throw punches when triggered. I’m no doctor, but he seemed to exhibit all the classic signs of a bipolar condition… and that’s something I do have quite a bit of experience with. Either way, he was an interesting person who seemed to have a huge heart as well as some really nasty demons.

I met Dennis at a Peaches Records store in Dearborn Michigan. He was there while on his tour promoting his solo album. I have the photo of me shaking hands with him. Very approachable superstar, friendly with everyone.

In '76, at Mile-High Stadium in Denver, I met------albeit for maybe 3-4 minutes, Carl Wilson. I was granted backstage access, & because he was my favorite member of the group, it was a real honor to meet him. As i was there, I saw Dennis , with Karen Lamm-Wilson. My impression, standing maybe 10--12 feel away for the 20 minutes i was there, was that i was watching THE Dude of Dudes ! The easiest way to say it is, it was just not possible to take my eyes off of him. He wasn't that tall : 5'10" , but he had a truly magnetic presence I've seen only one other time in my 76 years. That, was in getting to know Marvin Gaye on the basketball court in LA, from '70 to the late summer of '73. He too, was a guy you just couldn't take your eyes off of. Both were handsome, though in differing ways, but with DW, there was just an incredible aura with him. and the only way to say it is really, he was THE Dude !! Whatever that " it " thing may be, he had it & then some, & he & everyone else, knew it. -------For whatever reasons, he never did perform as a solo artist, which is a shame. I suspect the booze & drugs played a role there, but it really is a shame. -------In '83, when I saw the group 2 times, he looked so bad------he was barely recognizable , & it just made me so sad. -------MJL, 76 y/o

I am almost 60 and have loved the Beach Boys since I was 16. Dennis was my favorite and his music was so underrated. I wonder what would have become of him if he was still with us today. I believe that he would have been even bigger. I could see him writing for other artists as well. RIP Dennis.

The real gift of this interview, is that clearly, DW is sober, clear, & his normal, reflective, self. He's not high or under the influence of alcohol. This man had so much talent ! if only he could have overcome his inner demons. I've been lucky enough to live long enough, to come to terms with mine ; at nearly 77 y/o, I had better be reconciled to what I am, but Dennis never got there. This is a really great little interview. Very intimate, and shows the best side of his personality. I’d like to preface this comment by saying that I don’t claim to be an expert or know everything there is to know about Dennis Wilson. I was still in high school when he died, and I never got to meet him. However I have been a huge fan ever since childhood, and I’ve read, heard, and seen countless interviews and firsthand accounts. From roughly 1968-forward, his story is a really sad one, interrupted by some truly inspired moments of songwriting… but ultimately it seems that the last 15 years of his life were essentially a long, slow downward spiral that ultimately resulted in a tragic, premature death. I think the number one factor in his long decline was the emotional and spiritual fallout of his encounter and experience with the Manson family. From everything I’ve heard, he carried a colossal amount of guilt over that whole thing, even if he didn’t participate in anything more sinister than haplessly introducing Manson to the Hollywood elite. Dennis was a victim in all that, in my opinion. It haunted him and it broke him. At any rate, like I said this is a great little glimpse at the kind of person he was, at a time when he apparently wasn’t letting his demons get the better of him. Thank you for uploading this.

Well the full Beach Boys band toured Australia the next year in 1978. I saw them in Melbourne. Carl was a bit out of it but overall a great concert.

@@erickjason9092 all three Wilson brothers were using heavy amounts of drugs during that tour. For instance, at a show in Perth, Carl collapsed on stage while high on heroin and had to apologize on the news the day after though he blamed it on a bad mixture of Valium and Mai Tais. He can also be seen and heard in the footage from some of those shows during that tour slurring his words and generally just high and out of it. Brian and Dennis were also doing heroin and cocaine on that tour and Carl actually got punched in the face by Brian’s bodyguard, rocky pamplin, for giving Dennis $15,000 for cocaine for which he in turn did with Brian. Dennis also got in trouble for that same incident and the other Beach Boys were considering kicking him out of the band and replacing him for the rest of the tour, though they never did and Dennis didn’t even know they were thinking about it. All in all though, Carl’s behavior was the worst, since he was usually seen as the most put together Wilson brother who could keep his behavior in check. But, during that tour, his drug and alcohol use was so bad that surprisingly Dennis was the most coherent Wilson brother for many shows.

@@westy40 Wow, that was right when the Beach Boys were falling apart as a band. The "tarmac incident" at Newark Airport was on September 3, 1977, Al Jardine's birthday. It was described in an October 20, 1977 Rolling Stone article by John Swenson called "The Beach Boys: No More Fun, Fun, Fun."

Mike Love and the management of the band didn't like the fact that Dennis had his solo deal, they ask him, or ordered him to come back to the band to record new stuff and touring.
